  • I've been in restaurants where some homeless person came in and started walking table to table panhandling until the staff chased them off.

  • I had a guy ask me for food at a gas station in Knoxville a couple months ago. Said he didnt want money, he was hungry, and just needed to eat. Took him in, bought him a sandwich at the deli, and the guy sat on the curb and ate it. Legitimate.

This old woman. . . . not sure if legit or not. But damn, to come right into the office and start walking around. Im afraid of what would have happened if I was not sitting at my desk, cause this part of the office is wide open for someone to steal shit. sigh.

  • That has apparently started in my neighborhood. It seems the panhandlers are organized...maybe if they put that much work into...um, work...they wouldn't be panhandling.

(I'm not talking about crazy folks that really can't hold down jobs, just these idiots in my neighborhood).

mine? no, not particularly. A lot of labs, though. What do you think that means?

Holy crap dude. LABS?! You're screwed. Leave the wife, leave the kids. Just get out of there now.

  • There was a story recently on channel 10 about people panhandling on south cedar.

Is it a scam? Should you give them cash?

  • When I lived in DC (2001-2003) I remember panhandlers hassling people at restaurants with outdoor seating all the time.
I've not noticed it as much in Chicago, and when I have the managers/wait staff have chased them off pretty quickly.

I get people coming to my front door at home all the time "selling candy to support their football/basketball team" or whatever. I get a crap load of door-to-door solicitations in general. It's not uncommon to have 4-5 take out menus stuffed into the door at any given time.

  • Kind've a genius strategy, so long as you're avoiding cops. You're catching people completely off guard and they're probably willing to pay in 10's and 20's to get you to leave. Ballsy, but sound high risk/ high reward strategy.

This happened to me at Blackfinn in Addison (DFW) during an MSU game. Talk about harshing one's mellow...the woman was PREGNANT...a bouncer approached, told her "this is a private party", and escorted her out...I ended up not enjoying that MSU victory as much as usual...

  • if she's asking for $20, it's not because she's hungry.

  • I read an article somewhere that said like 25% of homeless people are Vietnam vets, which makes me feel bad because they are in their current position because they started abusing drugs to cope with awful situations. That said, this is ridiculously too far. I kind of just hate begging in all forms. If you are going to do it, play an instrument or something. Hell, sell bottles of water or peanuts on the way to Tigers games. But I hate ones who chase you down or confront you about giving to them. If only they would get the help they need (those who would even accept it).

It's almost never because their hungry anyway. I remember a tRCMB thread a while back when a lot of people said, in their experience, most homeless people won't accept a meal, just cash to "go buy a meal", or crack.

She wouldnt want your meal. She can get one for free everyday at the local homeless shelter or food kitchen. She is either scamming you for drug money or running a scam where her car is parked around the corner pretending to be homeless. This happened on my street in the city years ago. People would knock on doors pretending to be from the post office and out of gas in need of 20 bucks. Call the police next time.

  • Had a woman driving a car stop me in a parking lot. She seemed sort of freaked out and said her gas tank was almost empty on her way to Pontiac Osteopathic. Gave her $7 and directions to M-59. Yeah, I probably got scammed

  • I usually give a dollar to the ones who have the "why lie, i need a beer" sign. At least they are going to party.

yeah, this was actually at my office. And she was just wandering in to an area that she shouldnt have ever been in. The worst part, the food kitchen is literally THREE DOORS DOWN FROM MY OFFICE at the local church. I know if I hadnt have been there, she would have been stealing something. Not a doubt in my mind.

And if she hadnt have gotten the hint, Id have called the police. She was a little on the scary side. sigh.

Buying someone a meal is one thing, I will do that for someone that needs it, even if Im flatass broke. Nobody gets my money though. That was just wrong.

We were walking to a cubs game a week or two ago and had a guy come up and tell us his daughter was having or had had an asthma attack, but her inhaler was out and he needed twelve dollars to buy her prescription, but only had six. Had an inhaler and pill bottle with some pills and everything. I admired his creativity.

  • Funniest thing happened a couple weeks ago...

Three friends and I were in the D, going to Greektown at 3 a.m. on a Tuesday. A homeless woman comes up to my friend and tries to barter with him for change. (He's drunk.) She has already been kicked out of the casino, and she says to my friend: "I have this dollar chip. How about I give you this dollar chip and you give me three dollars back? Deal?"

She didn't get the three dollars.

What is that, a Titleist? A hole in one...

  • I would have no problem telling a panhandler in my office to GTFO. I just fon't trust that it's not drugs.

Nothing says "party" quite like a homeless guy with a couple of 40's of Steel Reserve and a few half smoked cigarettes passed out in a park pissing himself.

I'll call the 40's and raise you the bottles of listerine I usually see them chugging on my walk home. Now THAT'S a party.

  • We have a local panhandler down here in Clearwater that works the "out of gas" angle while carrying a small gas can...he makes serious coin off the bluehairs in the Publix parking lots.
