I have recurring nightmares about falling into empty elevator shafts, having elevators drop a bunch of floors, go sideways, etc.
Guess I know what I'll be dreaming about tonight.

I'm struggling to picture how this worked. She is getting IN the Elevator and her leg gets caught and then she gets dragged into the shaft? So wouldn't she have been in the car? and it was going up...or was it her "front" leg and she ended up below the car with her leg ripped off? I don't need pictures, just trying to understand. I'm sure she would have bled out quickly. pretty scary.
And I remember the story of the doctor getting his head ripped off and the lady stuck in a car with it. I haven't don't that move since.

I deal with otis elevator mechanics and there definitely was something wrong with this elevator. Doors have buttloads of sensors that prevent the elevator from taking off. Escalators are WAY more dangerous! Grind you to a pulp

Enrico Palazzo said... As for the escalators, you are correct. My buddy was in a London Underground station when he heard a blood curdling scream. A girl around 10 or 11 was on an escalator wearing shoes kind of like Crocs but more spongy. While just standing there the shoes sunk into the escalator and when she went to get off the escalator her shoes were stuck and her foot got taken off. I always make sure as I come to the end of an escalator that I do not get clothing or shoes caught.

Though fire officials initially believed the doors closed on Ms. Hart’s leg, they said Wednesday night that it appeared from surveillance video and witness accounts that the doors remained open as the elevator suddenly ascended.
“She is just kind of yanked up with it,” a fire official said. “Then, the elevator car becomes pinned between the first and second floor. It seems like her body is what stops the elevator’s movement.” The official said that it took about an hour just to remove the two other passengers, who were not hurt but were taken to New York University Langone Medical Center. “I don’t think any physical injuries,” he said. “It is just what they saw, traumas.”

Like some others here, I don't understand how this happened. So the elevator started going up as she was getting on (doors still open), but her leg was kind of just hanging out there? How did she not fully jump into the elevator? Was she stepping on in slow motion?
WTF?
I definitely do NOT want to see the video, but I'd love to see a computer animation of it... or something that shows me how this physically happened.

Another article says it was a "Billion to 1" power surge that sent it up very fast. and this isn't the first time such a thing has happened....There is a snopes entry on elevator deaths that describes a few like this where they go up or down VERY fast and there's just no chance for the unlucky person stuck half in and out. only takes a second. what a grisly way to go.
