Odd Column about Hollis From PSU Perspective

  • The guy is missing the point entirely...

His premise is "All of Hollis' ideas are a giant money grab."

You know what... I have had a lot of ideas... none of them have made very much money. In order to make a lot of money with an idea, it has to be a really good (or great) idea.

If Hollis didnt have great ideas, they wouldn't make any money.

So why not focus on the innovation behind the idea and the fact that he has the ability to turn a great idea into money, because frankly, it was a great idea.

The guy makes is sound like Hollis takes every whim that comes through his mind and tries to exploit it for cash.

The reason these ideas were adopted, and are still used in a lot of cases, is because they were great ideas.

So this guy doesnt like the court in the center of a football stadium, so what. His team is never there. The fact that when MSU was at Ford Field (2009) or in Indy (2010), so many more fans were able to get tickets is a WIN for the fans. There are more tickets available. If the fans didnt want to go because they didnt like the view, its not like Hollis was beating on their door, stealing their safe and leaving tickets.

There were more tickets available and the fans bought them... Crazy concept I know.

  • Mr Jones' article is as confusing as the direction of the Penn State athletic department. While money and college athletic department business are the ostensible subjects of the article, the reader responses helped me understand what's going on over there. It is still all about Joe, and the way the school dealt with Joe in evaluating his negligence with Sandusky. Poor Hollis gets thrown in there by Jones and the Penn State AD in an attempt to change the subject from Joe. It appears that Penn State still has a long way to go to overcome the whole Sandusky outrage. . .

That's exactly my point. I'm not sure that higher ticket prices is any better or worse than fans paying $200+ for nose bleed 600 level seats so far from the action that they are basically sitting in a stadium watching the game on TV. I get the whole "I was there" thing, but it's getting to the point where I'd rather just watch at a bar across the street.

    Not sure who/what "Triton" is.

To each their own, I guess, but IMHO the Detroit Final Four was one of the greatest moments in MSU sports history. I doubt many Spartans who sat in the nosebleeds that day wish they had watched at home or in a bar for better sight lines.

  • I love Hollis, but I'll never go to another Final Four (I've been to three). Watching a basketball in that atmosphere is absolutely depressing and lifeless.

Weird article, as it ends with him saying really nice things about Hollis after setting it up as a bash piece....

Of course, if the guy was really a journalist, he would have pointed out that A) Izzo is allowed to schedule "whenever, wherever." B) In an era where FB teams are playing the weakest non-conf schedule possible, Hollis actively pursued games such as BSU, the Texas A&M thing and Bama. C) Hollis hates the soul of sports so much that he is trying to get a basketball game between the Spartans and the Trojans played in Athens in the Panathinaiko stadium.

Why would the writer need to add the points you've added? It would add absolutley nothing to the point of the acrticle, that PSU needs an AD like Hollis, someone who is innovative and makes his university a substantial profit.

  • People - the article was written by a reporter from a Harrisburg newspaper. It was not written by anyone from Penn State. Gee, let's not let the facts get in the way.

Actually, what I think he's saying is... each year they play the sweet 16 at the following year's Final Four destination, and they set it up as they would the final four because... well its never a bad thing to do a trial run.

Basketball in football stadiums has been going on for decades (re; Pistons in Silverdome) and NCAA has had regionals and FFs in football stadiums for a long while. All these had a configuration that put the court at ONE END of the stadium with temporary seating on one side.

What Mark did (with the Kentucky game a few years ago in Ford Field) was to CENTER the court on the field, enabling seating capacity to be the ENTIRE stadium plus field level seats for student sections. This paved the way for NCAA to do this at tourney's at venues like Ford Field and Lucas Oil.

  • "If I had anything to do with choosing an AD, that would be my only consideration. Does the person have a business and marketing acumen and can he or she translate it into revenue?"

That line scares me. Take Dave Brandon for example here. Good businessman that can get revenue for michigan. But does not have the best interest of college athletics. Countless questionable decisions and stances on changes we all want to see, the last being his BS reason of why not to have home playoff games in college football.

Brandon was also played by Alabama in setting up their series.

  • He wanted the court moved to the center of a dome? What a prick! He should be more like Gene Smith or Tim Curley.

I can understand that, but I like that there is more of a chance to get tickets now and the game itself is only part of the atmosphere of the Final Four that I enjoy.

I have had some great times the Friday night before the game with college friends, and all day Saturday leading up to the game.

People seem to really be of two minds on this.
Some say a Final Four is the best experience in sports. Others like you are unimpressed.
Never been to one--kinda considered it for Detroit but found out how much it would cost--yikes--ya, I'll watch on TV.

The Detroit Final Four was, bar none, the best sporting event I've attended. Atmosphere was outstanding. B1G Champ game was close #2 but the win in the semi-final at the Final Four was electric.

  • Isn't this article saying that Mark Hollis is the standard by which the AD at PSU should be measured?

    Why all the outrage?

No one is outraged, but the article is poorly written and got several basic facts wrong. The majority of this thread is discussing college basketball venues, not expressing "outrage" at the article.

I don't understand why people exaggerate things so much on the internet.

Specifically the Summers dunk. The temporary seating from the football stands to the court were shaking violently. Again, I think any Spartan fan in attendance was willing to give up sight lines to have been there on that day.

  • By the way, it says something about the status of our program that MSU fans won't attend Final Fours any more because of sight lines. There are big time college basketball programs who so rarely get to FFs that their fans would sell their firstborn children just to get in and sit behind a pole in the corner of the third deck. MSU goes so often we can afford to get picky.

    Nice exagerration on your part.

Besides wrongly crediting Hollis with the Pride comes before the fall line, what are the several basic facts that are wrong?

    Inaccuracies in the blog/article:

    1. Hollis understands sports. He has a passion for sports that goes well beyond money making. Anyone who follows him on Twitter knows this. Anyone who has talked to him in person knows this.
    2. Hollis did not "steal" WJR broadcasts from UM.
    3. Hollis did not have anything to do with Mike Hart or the "Pride" quote.
    4. Nick Sabin was a coach at MSU for 5 years and had success right from the beginning. This is not a "momentary success and quick departure".
    5. The state of Michigan is not named after the University of Michigan's mascot. (Michigan has been the "wolverine state" since the 1830's)
    6. The current 4 game win streak against UM is not the first time, as the article implies by saying MSU fans "never thought they'd see such a day". MSU had a 4 game streak in the 1960's against UM.
