Another interesting factoid here: Every member of the MSU recruiting class was offered by UM, and plan A recruits. None of the UM class were offered by MSU. Always remind your UM buddies about that.

    This is important.

  • Stars are allocated primarily based on individual measures of athleticsim and how skill levels manifest themselves in meaningless games in which the participants know that their individual performances are the most important aspects of the games. Players who are at their best in games in which coaching and a team concept are important - league races, state tournaments and rivalry games - games where there is pressure, crowds and media scrutiny - get short shrift. This fact represents a huge flaw in the methodology of class rankings. A player like Draymond Green excelled in the lastter described settings but was far down in his class ranking because other players could run faster, jump higher and shoot better in a less formal structure. Denzel Valentine is a similar player who may prove to be as good or better than Draymond.

Not to dis Denzel, but Draymond is bordering on rafter material.

He is a finalist for B1G POY. If he wins that and or another Final Four ring, and it would be hard to keep him out.

Lets not heap that much praise and pressure on Denzel at this point. Relax and let him develop.

  • Who would you rather have as the best player in your class:

Player A: About the oldest of all members of his recruiting class, ranked where he is due to AAU performances against players 2-3 years younger than him, now struggling in prep play against more physically developed 17-18 year olds (McGary)

Player B: About the youngest of all members of his recruiting class (still just 16), everyone raves about his defense and the completeness of his game, has great performances in big games (Harris)

  • Don't care what UM is doing.

I live in Fishers and my kids went to school at Hamilton Southeastern where Gary Harris is playing.

On basketball nights there is not a single report on the local stations that doesn't have a Harris highlight. He does everything - defends, distributes the ball, nails 3 point jumpers, dunks over defenders, is decent at the free throw line, and can take over when necessary to win the game. He elevates the game of his teammates similar to Mateen and Draymond Green.

Probably most important is his attitude. He's a great kid with no inflated ego and everyone likes him.

He's going to look great in Green and White.

I think you're looking at it from slightly the wrong angle, but I get what you're saying QP.

I think Valentine will have a chance to impress more than Day Day because he'll probably have the ball in his hands a lot more, and earlier in possessions, and is looking like he'll just have absurd finishers to distribute to.

  • I'm as interested in recruiting stuff as they next guy, but sometimes it feels like this obsession with class rankings mistakes the map for the territory. Class rankings don't buy you anything; you have to win it on the court.

We need a term that describes this obsession and ridicules it at the same time - a "September Heisman" for basketball.

Here are a few of the recruits that the backhanded-complimenting "big m" and the janitor, "detroitbry", have stuck their chests out about over the past 10+ years.

Leland Anderson LaVell Blanchard Jamal Crawford Kevin Gaines Gavin Groninger Maurice Searight Bernard Robinson Jr. Josh Moore Lester Abram Daniel Horton Dion Harris Brent Petway Courtney Sims Ronald Coleman K'Len Morris DeShawn SIms Kelvin Grady Manny Harris

It won't stop, even if McGary doesn't work out.

It's like Sam Webb... not that I look too much into his stuff, but there's always an excuse. They'll say "well those guys didn't work out, but wait 'til you see these guys step in and dominate"...

They're also convinced they stole Derrick Walton from Izzo. Pathetic. With Trice, Denzel Valentine and possibly Tyus Jones, Walton would have been Brandon Smith here.

  • Next year's UM team is going to be "special". Like, final 4 banner special. Why, you ask? Because in 2010, UM had a GREAT season. They beat MSU twice on the way to a stellar 9-9 6th place B1G finish. They advanced to the second day of the tournament, and lost a close game to Duke (IE, they won). Now, this year, they have finally won their first road B1G game since February 2011...so they got THAT monkey off their backs. They have only lost 7 games this year, and are close to 3rd in the B1G. Next year, they bring in an old guy who was KILLING it in AAU. He will be 20 when the 2012/13 season starts, so that means he is better than everybody. Since everybody on the team has proven themselves to be big time players, and the recruiting class is guaranteed to be great to the man, there is no way any team with greater talent and coaching will have a chance. No fucking way.

What's funny is that these team rankings are based on incorrect numbers. Scout counts Stauskas twice so that elevates umAA's rankings. They show 4 recruits when they only have 3.

I saw Draymond play twice in HS. I have seen Denzel play three times. I was very excited by Draymond. He played on an exceptional team but it was hard to take your eyes off him. He was the center of everything but making baskets was probably the least impressive thing he did. He had verve, tenacity, skills, aggressiveness and creativity but was considered by many as the least important member of his recruiting class. He has had just about exactly the collegiate career I had expected. All those attributes of Green in HS are also found in Denzel. I am excited for him in the same way and my enthusism is rooted in reason and empiricism and just refuses to be dampened.
