Oklahoma City has an NBA team?

  • Honestly, I never knew. Countdown until Ok City doesn't have an NBA team...

  • They took the Sonics out of Seattle. While I don't agree with the way that happened OKC has shown tremendous support for both the Thunder and for the Hornets when they played there for the season after Katrina. Similar to Portland. I don't see them losing that franchise anytime soon.

  • It's the former Seattle Supersonics

So the NHL is going to get an LA v. NY Stanley Cup finals....while the NBA is going to get San Antonio/OKC v. LeBron and the apathetic fan base.

If the NBA had what the NHL has, ESPN would explode... I kind of think the NBA would prefer Boston at this point...especially if Indy somehow takes out Miami (don't think the NBA will allow this to happen.)

If Indy and OKC play in the NBA finals, and no one watches...did they really happen?

Since 94, the highest SCF rating was in the 5s. The lowest NBA Finals rating in the same frame was in the high 6s.

I didn't until I moved here, but I don't follow basketball at all. The people here seem to really like their team though, I hear it brought up at work frequently by people that don't really watch much sports.

And until I read this thread, I had no idea who was left in the NHL playoffs.

I'm not comparing TV ratings and I'm not saying the NHL will beat the NBA...I'm just saying the NBA/ESPN would would kill for a Lakers-Knicks or even a Clippers - Nets matchup like the NHL will probably have this year.

A LeBron-less finals this year will probably approach that 6 number.

NY and NJ are tied at 2-2, LA is beating Phoenix 3-1.

    It's been a strange playoffs.

I like their team! OKC has one of the more entertaining squads led by Durant/Westbrook/Hardin (Might be a better "Big Three" then LeBron and the Apathetics)

Too bad they aren't in a big or flashy market do the NBA doesn't market Kevin Durant...who should be right up there on the pantheon of current superstars.

I think the NBA is pissed at Durant for quietly extending his contract in OKC a few years ago instead "testing the market in the offseason."

that is because until the last few years the Stanley Cup Finals were on cable while the NBA was always on network TV.

I completely agree, but it's really a shame that you're right. The NBA would kill to have this current Knicks team, as terrible as it is, to be showcased in the finals. They should be bending over backwards to promote a team like OKC. Not only is OKC a way more entertaining team than the Knicks, but Kevin Durant is exactly the type of player that the NBA should be making the face of the league. I understand that OKC doesn't carry the same earning potential that a major market does, but it's team carries a way better story line than any of the current major market teams.

In the NBA's defense I see Durant in quite a few commercials.

  • Fill me in. Do these cities have NBA franchises right now- and if they do what were the former cities. (besides Sacramento)

    New Orleans
    Memphis
    Charlotte
    Sacramento

    New Orleans Memphis Charlotte Sacramento

New Orleans - came from Charlotte

    Memphis --- came from Vancouver

Charlotte -- replaced the old Charlotte Hornets in expansion

    Sacramento has always been there

  • Technically the Kings franchises started in

    Rochester, NY as the Royals
    To Cincinatti, OH
To Kansas City/Omaha as the Kings
    To just Kansas City
    To Sacremento in 1985.

Yeah, you're right. They definitely don't ignore him. I just get the feeling that if he was in New York or LA, he'd be THE story in the NBA. Part of it is also probably a product of his personality/image, though. He's not even the flashiest player on his team. I think that a lot of the people who hate the NBA right now hate it because of their idea of what the NBA image is. Durant, to me, is basically the opposite of that image. If that was communicated a little better, I think that he could draw some new fans in.

If the Heat aren't in the Finals, it'll be because they lost to Boston. But I'm sure no one will tune in to watch Boston, right?

It seems like OKC has a lot of young fans. Up here in NY it seems like tons of High School kids love Westbrook and Durant. Young point guards think they're Westbrook and I see tons of KD shoes.

Considering the fact that the 5.7 rating from last year's Game 7 of the Cup Finals was the highest rated game of ANY NHL game since 73. The Pistons-Pacers ECF in 04 got ratings in the 8s despite being on ESPN.
