Oladipo vs Burke for Player of Year?

  • Points over 40-minutes: Burke 21.8, Oladipo 19.9 (Oladipo only averages 27.6 minutes to Burke's 35.3, a huge difference of 8.4 minutes per game less for Oladipo).

    FG%: Oladipo at 63%, Burke at 49%

3pt shooting: Oladipo at 49%, Burke at 38%

Rebounds: Oladipo at 6.0 per game and Burke at 3.2

Blocks: 25 for Oladipo and 11-Blocks for Burke.

Road wins: 6-2 for Indiana, and 4-5 for Michigan.

Steals: 68 for Oladipo and 48 for Burke

If Indiana wins you have to give it to Oladipo, if UM wins, Burke should have the same consideration. However you would have to say Oladipo has been more effective in the minutes he has gotten.

  • It's close, but I'd probably give it to Burke. Based solely on the fact that Michigan would be mediocre or worse without him. He makes that team. I could see Indiana still being competitive versus everyone without Oladipo.

EDIT: But then again, I'm not even sure what Player of the Year means. It reminds me of the MVP award in the NFL.

  • You take Oladipo from Indiana and they still have a solid team; you take Burke from UofM and you've got a dumpster fire of an offense (since Timmay likes to disappear so much) and a ship without a rudder.
Both are dominant players and men amongst boys at times. Honestly, if I had a ballot to cast, I'd wait until after the game on Sunday. To the Victor goes the spoils? It's never just about the stat line, it's about they storyline.

I don't believe that anybody in college basketball means as much to their team as Burke does to UofM. He is a sick college player. However, he's probably at his ceiling right now (based on measurables). Oladipo has the potential to be an filthy player at the next level if he progresses even half as much as he has in the last year, again. And he's doing his work in less minutes than Burke.

But, if Burke can ball his way to a share of a B1G championship this Saturday-- when without him UofM is pretty much Illinios/Minn level-- it would be pretty rough not to give him PotY. Especially since that will probably give us a share of the B1G title as well; and that's a hell of an assist for a Wolverine.

  • burke is um's version of mateen cleaves, minus the championships, and final 4s. great college player, but not a great nba talent.

He also adjusts the pts/gm stat to 40 minutes to make Oladipo look better since he plays fewer minutes than Burke.

Q: If he is indeed better, then why is he on the bench more? Why aren't we seeing ALL the stats adjusted to 40 minutes?

  • Oladipo.

I know Indiana would be pretty decent without him, whereas Michigan would be effed without Burke. But Oladipo has consistently raised his game against the top teams (20 ppg against ranked teams, I believe) and he makes at least one play a game that any other player in the country would struggle to pull off.

  • Guys, take off the green and white goggles. I hate Michigan just as much as you do, but Burke has played great this year, all facets of the game. He's the B1G POY

This is the same play they ran earlier, turn the corner and look. Nice back door. Cleaves the alley-oop. Ohh! What a setup off the timeout!

  • Michigan may have 2 more wins under its belt if Burke wasn't a selfish little prick at the end of games. His dribble around to look for the perfect fade away 3 at the buzzer is the opponents best weapon.

Edit. If there is one thing that Burke leads the country in it would be pushing off with the off arm. Unfortunately this stat is very hard to keep track of.

Wow. Nice stat-cherry picking there. Good job.

  • Lets leave the stats of the conferences leader in assists or the countries leader in assist to to ratio off the comparison.

    Mekano

  • I say Burke, due to per game numbers at the position he plays (ignoring the point guard's assists was a slick move), and how he carries that team. Per 40 stats ignore the fact that it's harder to maintain production for 30 minutes than it is for 10. Less extreme disparity in this example obviously.

How do their floor games compare?

"They both use the floor during the game, but over an adjusted 40 minutes Oladipo's feet make contact with 15.348 inches of the court at any one time while Burkes are only 12.573. Again when adjusted over 40 minutes it shows that I still have files on Chris Webber and Roy Tarpley from their time as bag men for the Purple Gang. Now Garrick Sherman is a guy who's size dictated that his floor game, again adjusted for 40 minutes, was definitely tall."

I personally would say Oladipo, but it has nothing to do with the fact that Burke plays for UM. I love Oladipo's defense, he can score when he needs too, but overall I will take his defense over Burke's scoring any day. Burke is a tremendous scorer , but thats all he can do. I think the award should go to the player that has the most impact on the game. I know UM wouldn't even be close to the Big Ten Title without Burke, but I believe IU wouldn't be close to the Title if it wasn't for Oladipo. Oladipo won't win because he plays with Zeller and a better supporting cast than Burke has.

He's actually the exact opposite. Cleaves elevated his team to another level with his drive to win. But when Cleaves was gone we still had a stacked team that went to another Final Four. Burke is great, I'm not taking anything away from the kid, but if Burke got injured earlier this season UM would be .500 in the conference. Burke is clearly the leader of the team but he's also the dominant offensive player on the team, unlike Mateen.

BS, who else for UM should have the ball in their hands at the end of the game? And how many games would they have lost without him.

Tough choice between Oladipo and Burke but I'd go with Burke as he is the man at the end of tight games and is more valuable to his team.

And to the guy who compared him to Mateen, Burke has much more of an NBA game than Cleaves did. Way faster and a better shooter.

To hit a 3 at the end of the game? Prolly stauskus or THJ (both shoot a higher % from 3) coming off a screen, not burke dribbling around and then take a contested fade away 3.
