On The Recruiting Trail

Info on new offers in Georgia, Cortez McDowell, T.J. Harrell, newly-hired Spartan defensive line coach Ron Burton and much more ...

    Sean Scherer

  • How is he a closer? Please provide specifics

    Frank Reynolds

  • Good info Sean. Harrell would be a great pickup and it sounds like Burton could be a big upgrade on the recruiting trail over Gil.

  • "Michigan State offered me a few week ago," McDowll said. "Coach Warner wants me to come up this spring. I will because Michigan State feels like it is a family environment. I want to build my relationship with those coaches. I'm going to try hard to get up there."
Cortez seems like the kind of kid we actually get to visit. If he gives us a closer look he'll notice all of the other Florida and Georgia kids on the roster. Autry will never visit IMHO. I think we get Harrell.

The original thread re: Coach Burton turned into a cluster**** so I'll post my comments here instead.

Anyone who's watched AF play more than a few times in the past decade knows their DL gets the most production AS A UNIT with much less talent than most other programs. They're typically giving up 40-60 lbs. per player on average to the opposing OL but are still extremely active.

What we lacked most from our DL development during the TG era was technique. With a few exceptions, our DLs didn't have great hand placement or multiple moves, which resulted in us relying on the blitz to get pressure on opposing QBs.

We shouldn't expect instant results, but the fact that the majority of our DL are underclassmen means we should expect noticeable improvements by the 2015 season.

Agreed. Although it sounds like worthy seemed to value his relationship over the other drawbacks it certainly seems like most of our DL's relied on athleticism over fundamentals. I don't want the comments to sound overtly critical of coach TG but I didn't see much improvement from Gholston over three years. He seemed to rely on his frame/speed combo but had trouble using his hands to fight off good footwork by a quality OL. Pretty much had one move. Again, not to be critical but if you've got someone that talented who is basically the same player for 3 years, maybe it's time for a change. Pair that with the inability to get out there and recruit and the decision to move on is a no brainer.

Remember when Dantonio first came in and the current D-Lineman (D-Ball, JSD, etc.) were talking about how much they loved the new coaching staff because they brought knowledge about the little things? I think Baldwin may have specifically mentioned hand placement.

So if Gill wasn't a technician compared to Burton, imagine how bad it was under JLS.

  • May have to get out and see Locus Grove (Cortez McDowell) in the fall.
