One Reason You Will & One Reason You Won't: Win The B1G

  • Multiple responses on Maxwell, and most seem pretty positive. Another pro-style quarterback, I assume?

With Nebraska, I would rather play a pro-style quarterback over a dual threat every single day of the week. Guys like Robinson, and even less mobile quarterbacks like Persa, just run crazy on us. Heart wrenching.

  • We lost our top 4 pass catchers in 3 Senior WR's (Cunningham, Nichol, Martin) and a Senior TE (Linthicum).

So yes our WR corps is extremely young and inexperienced, with Bennie Fowler being the only one with true game experience (and that was mostly in 2010, was out most of 2011 injured). Lots of young talent including Tennessee transfer D'Anthony Arnett, Keith Mumphery, Tony Lippitt, and Juwaun Ceasar. Also a crop of talented freshman WR's who may or may not play.

Pro style, moves better than KC though.

    Thanks for the answer.

As for the quoted, does Coach D normally red shirt skill position players or what? Any general theme, or just "if you're good enough, you'll play."?

He's only had 3 de-commits over a 5+ year period. So recruiting has been not only very good under Coach D, but very stable. When you have seniors and upperclassmen who've been in the system they're usually going to beat out true and even redshirt frosh unless there are injuries or they're just that good. Most true/redshirt frosh aren't "just that good". Being able to redshirt 90%+ of each recruiting class is a definite luxury.

Who is taking over for KC? Expecting a major learning curve, or what?

Andrew Maxwell. Redshirt JR who has been groomed for the spot since he stepped on campus. Looked solid (but youthfully jittery) in limited minutes last year.

No one expects Maxwell to be just as good as KC, but he'll be plenty capable of competing at a high level.

  • If we use Leveon Bell like we should as an every down back, we wont have to worry about the Wide Receivers. In his 2 years at MSU he has averaged over 5 yards per carry and thats sharing the carries with Baker, imagine what he would do if he got the ball a lot more. When we had Javon Ringer who was significantly smaller than Bell, he was carrying the ball almost 35 times a game and never missing games. We went 9-3 that year with a much worse defense. We need to rely on our defense and running game. I like Larry Caper and Nick Hill but lets be honest, there is no way they should be taking carries away from Bell. We have to lean heavily on Bell this year because Maxwell just is not seasoned enough to just come out throwing the ball alot, especially against a great defensive team in Boise State to start the season.

  • Will: Defense will carry us through a few early games in which the offense struggles a bit due to inexperience. Leveon Bell carries the offense in those games.

Won't: Offensive inexperience hurts us too much in a game or two.

    For UM:

    Will: They're Michigan.

Won't: They ran out of time.

Man, it's refreshing to hear a fan of another team talk like that. I've never fully figured out the allure of the dual-threat QB, on this site or elsewhere. I'd take 62%, 2-1 TD-int QB with cement shoes over 55%, 1-1 running QB any day of the week. That's why we have running backs.

You make a big assumption that he won't get banged up getting all the work. Javon may have been smaller, but that only meant they used less clay in the brick. Plus, it's good to use two guys and wear the other team down late in the game. Think Renaud & Irvin vs. PSU.

Im not saying don't use them at all, but he is too good to be getting less than 80% of the carries every game
