One Reason You Will & One Reason You Won't: Win The B1G

  • Maxwell is a prototype Pro style QB who is more mobile than KC, but is still no dual threat QB. Has all the tools, Elite 11 QB, been groomed in exact same system for 3 years, and has been throwing to most of the new WRs during that time, including Arnett, the Tenn transfer who saw significant action at UT as a true frosh.

We have a lot of very talented WRs vying for the positions, aren't relying on any 1 guy to step up from day 1. But we will obviously miss the experience and leadership.

TE is a bigger problem- After Sims, who has AA potential when healthy, we have a converted DE and some younger players who haven't produced anything yet.

Andrew Maxwell. RS JR Elite 11 guy, our best QB prospect since Smoker and maybe ever.

It's impossible to replace 3 years of starting experience though. Maxwell has the potential to be better than KC, have to see what happens when he's thrown in the fire under the light vs Boise .

With what Boise lost it may be more of a steaming pile than a fire. Ok, maybe not a steaming pile, but not a large fire.

Im not saying don't use them at all, but he is too good to be getting less than 80% of the carries every game

Depends on what the others are doing. If everyone is making good gains, why wear your best guy out?

Boise this year will be the level of say, a Purdue team? It will be close for a bit but 27-17?

Won't: Gholston and the rest of the defense are reported to Delaney by Brandon for playing aggressive defense and tackling their players resulting in expulsion.

    Will: Defense

Won't: New starters at QB and WR don't develop into consistent playmakers.

Seems like the bottom line to me. Or we have injuries, specifically to Maxwell. Cook might be developing nicely but there is no easy way to put him in against the likes of OSU, ND, UM (in Ann Arbor), Wisconsin (in Madison)...

Let me start by saying Nebraska didn't get to have a Spring Game. That nasty storm that pushed through the Midwest this past weekend knocked that out of the plans. Nebraska still had a great weekend in terms of recruiting, but the lack of a Spring Game has me a little empty.

I saw a thread on the Blue Board, link here, for Big Ten Predictions. It was stated by Macks, and I agreed, that our division could very well be a toss up between the Spartans, Huskers, and Wolverines this year.

So, how about one reason each -- why you will win the Big Ten, and why you will not.

    For Nebraska:

Will: Because of Rex Burkhead. The warhorse keeps on keepin' and pulls us through a couple of tight game we wouldn't have won otherwise.

Won't: Because of our front seven. We lost Jared Crick (though he was pretty ineffective last year) and Lavonte David. There's some experience in the front seven, but I'm more scared than anything at this point.

And because someone will expect something of the sort, he are some photos.

    Happy Spring, Spartans.

You're just the bees knees, man. You know just how to post.

    This should be obvious, but:

Will: Defense. We've got it at every level and they're almost the same bunch that was lockdown last year.

Won't: Passing. I completely trust Maxwell, but it would be hard to imagine things to be completely fine with new QBs and a new WR bunch. There is little room for error.

  • Anyone got a link on your wide receivers/tight ends? With as much as the group keeps getting mentioned, I'm kind of interested in what's leaving and returning. If nothing else, short list of the major contributors gone? I can do the leg work myself.

Basically, everything is leaving. Off the top of my head we lose our top 3 WR (Cunningham, nichol, Martin) and top TE (Linthicum). Top returner is probably Bennie fowler but he has had many injury problems. Have a few other talented WR but inexperienced (arnett-tenn transfer, lippet, mumphery are the three that come to mind but I feel like I'm missing someone else). Also a couple freshmen that are promising. We return Sims at TE who is big and fast and shown flashes but has yet to put together consistent performances for a variety of reasons (1-year suspension, injuries being major contributors).

    Holy crap.

    Cunningham -- 79 Rec for 1306 and 12 TDs

    Martin -- 66 Rec for 777 and 4 TDs

    Linthicum -- 31 Rec for 364

    Nichol -- 26 Rec for 352

    Your #5 receiver was Bell.

I knew Cunningham was your go-to, but in terms of yards? Wow, what a difference.

    Yep, losing a ton.

The silver lining is that we've consistently recruited very well at the position, and have been grooming a large # of young WRs t step up. You would have heard their names last year had we not been so spoiled with the 3 senior WRs we had, simply weren't enough balls to go around to younger players. We also have a nice mix of big WRs and slot WRs, and got a player out of Florida 2 years ina row before they blew up and got the Florida & SEC schools hot for them.

And the other point is that while the new receiving corps lacks experience, they DO have a comfort level with Maxwell because (for the most part) those are the guys he has been throwing to for three years. We won't have to worry about them "jelling" or developing chemistry. Now if they can only minimize their inevitable blunders.

They got us in the last game of a brutal stretch at their place, while they two weeks prior they had an off week and Minn..and it still took the second worst play calling of the year to assist them in the victory. You could knock certain things about MSU this year; talent level isn't one of them. Maybe he should re-watch tape, or listen to DiNardo.

Yep, I remember when he nearly quit your board last fall due to people ripping on T-mart

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
