Opinions on living in Dallas/Ft. Worth?

  • I'm looking at a job opportunity down there, my office would be in Ft. Worth. Have visited many times (relatives in Arlington) but am curious as to where a good place to live would be? We'd be looking for a nice suburb with great schools (young kids about to be school age) that's convenient to Ft. Worth and the airport. For comparison - I'd be looking for an equivant to Northville/Troy/Rochester/Birmingham in the Detroit area.

  • Stay north or east of town. Hurst, Euless, Bedford (HEB) are nice areas that are similar to the ones you mentioned. My in-laws are from Azle which is west of Ft Worth and it's a really nice place as well. When you get to the south side of Ft Worth it gets rough as well as northwest of town in areas like Sansom Park.

I believe Southlake is the town you're looking for.

  • North Richland Hills is nice. About 45 minutes away from DFW, and 30 min from the Lovedale(?) airport. Don't know how the schools are, but there are definitely some nice suburban areas.

  • Be sure to visit The Flying Saucer as often as possible.

  • Live near where you work if possible. Commuting here sucks.

I suppose if you want to be near DFW and FW, Cardinal Fang is probably right. I live in Dallas though, so not too sure about the Tarrant County side of the area.

  • Was there last week, it's only May and already starting to get hot. If you like unbearable heat for 4 months of the year, it's a good place to be.

    This.

If you work "normal" hours traffic is a bitch. What takes you 10 minutes on a Sunday takes you at least an hour Mon-Fri 7:30-9:00 AM and 3:45-6.30 PM.

Aside from traffic, it's an awesome city. There's so much to do and places to see. The summers suck balls until 10:00 when if cools off to 80, but the spring and falls and a large portion of the winter is sweet.

  • I actually think Ft Worth is an underrated city. I live in Austin but have been to Ft Worth a few times and had a blast.

  • I lived in Arlington when I was a kid. All I remember is how awesome Six Flags, the Ft. Worth Zoo, and Rangers games were. But more of my memories are of being shut into our laundry room several times a year freaking out during tornadoes and baseball sized hail wreaking havoc on our cars and roof...panic

Have fun laughing at everyone driving terribly when it "snows"

  • Look into Colleyville, Southlake, Grapevine, and Keller. The eye candy in Southlake is amazing if you can afford it there.

This is a Pallas’s cat. Their round pupils give them an odd human quality. They disturb me...deeply.

  • I'm young and live near TCU. I love these cities. So much fine trim and many, many activities. Starting to get hot, but whatever.

  • If you ever get the chance to go to Dallas, take it from me, pass it by. Cause you'll only sing the blues down in Dallas, take it from me, dont go and cry. -Jimmy Buffett

  • I live about an hour and a half south in beeeeeeaaaaaaaauuuuuutiful Waco and am probably going to be transferred to Arlington. I'm looking forward to getting out of this horrible town to a metro area that has a lot going on.

It is starting to get hot down here, I hopped in my car yesterday and the thermostat was at 104, but it was sitting in direct sun all day. Last year we had a stretch of 100+ days of 100 degrees or higher with no precipitation. Hellish.

If this transfer to Arlington doesn't go down, I'm looking to get out of Texas all together and go either to Chicago or Boston. If you move down, contact me and lets grab a beer, I'm up in the Metroplex often.

Why on earth did you move to the arm pit of Texas in the first place?

The 4 months becomes more bearable when you're never more than a week or so away from 70 degrees thoughout the "winter".

I have 2 siblings north of Dallas and IMO its a awesome area that I'd go in a heartbeat if the roots weren't so deep here.

  • Lived in Flower Mound, worked in Irving during the mid-90's. Loved the Barbeque, Women, and attitude of the people... Absolutely hated the weather! Unlivable from May thru November.... However February thru the end of April cannot be beat - still remember going to Stars Stanley cup playoff games and sitting outside grilling and drinking... Moved to Boston in 2000 and would definitely take a New England winter over a Dallas summer anytime! If heat doesn't bother you, go for it! It has become crowded though - my commute went from 15 minutes during rush hour when I moved there to 45+ during off hours.....

  • There are nice areas in the city around TCU, and some good public schools too. In-laws live there and it is very nice.

My wife and her dad both went there. There are some nice grade schools in the area too including a public Montessori.

She desperately wants to move back.

Untrue. Austin crushes both Dallas, Houston and San Antone without question. Austin is amazing. Nowhere else in that state is even bearable.
