I agree, but probably correct. Why the ref just stands there and watches Carkner land haymakers on someone who's already down on the ice is beyond me.

    NHL : Update: Boyle-ing Over

Watch as Matt Carkner jumps Brian Boyle and lands a couple of vicious sucker punches to his head.

Thing is, If Boyle doesn't receive a fighting major how is Dubinsky 3rd man in? And yeah the refs this playoffs have been atrocious. Every series they've been awful.

  • What triggered all this. Did I miss something from game 1?

Good thing Shanahan set the bar high.

"46.16 Third Man In - A game misconduct penalty, at the discretion of the Referee, shall be imposed on any player who is the first to intervene (third man in) in an altercation already in progress except when a match penalty is being imposed in the original altercation. This penalty is in addition to any other penalties incurred in the same incident.

"This rule also applies to subsequent players who elect to intervene in the same or other altercations during the same stoppage of play.

"Generally, this rule is applied when a fight occurs."

AFAICT, the ref hadn't decided to call a game misconduct on Carkner. (Again, why, I can't help you.) I'm frankly rather floored by the gamer handed out to someone who's trying to prevent a beating that the official responsible for preventing said beating is just watching happen. BUT it appears that it's within the ref's discretion to toss Dubinsky.

Reffing has been awful across the board so far. A plague on all their houses.

Ottawa was mad at Boyle for roughing up Karlsson after one play. Which they both received 2 minutes for roughing in game 1.

Does "match penalty" mean game misconduct? Wouldn't that prevent the rule from being applied in this case? I don't blame the Ranger for tossing the gatorade and all, the ref just stood there and watched it, absolutely ridiculous that Dubinsky got tossed for that.

Check out the TSN video I posted above. Boyle (the beatee tonight) bashed a Sen's head in the other night, and Carkner was inserted into the lineup to exact revenge.

And yeah, based on precedent, I think that Carkner better prepare to pay a heavy fine. right

All whales are fish, but not all fish are whales.

"21.1 Match Penalty - A match penalty involves the suspension of a player for the balance of the game and the offender shall be ordered to the dressing room immediately.

"A match penalty shall be imposed on any player who deliberately attempts to injure or who deliberately injures an opponent in any manner."

"23.1 Game Misconduct Penalty - A game misconduct penalty involves the suspension of a player for the balance of the game but a substitute is permitted to replace immediately the player or goalkeeper so removed."

Agreed that Dubinsky shouldn't have felt the need to protect a helpless teammate, given that the ref was standing there watching the penalty occur (and had already called it). Don't know that that will help him with the Shanafiner.

Although, as Evgeni Malkin can tell you, precise application of the rules is not a league requirement in the playoffs.

I had agreed with the gentleman you were responding to.

Given the reason I had laid out for thinking that Dubinsky should never have needed to intervene to save his teammate from being whacked while defenseless, I felt it fair to ask you to give your rationale for disagreeing.

It is your right to disagree, naturally. Don't expect to convert anyone to your line of thinking by just tossing out "you're wrong" as a response -- but then you clearly don't intend to convince anyone of anything.

One of the commentators made reference to the beating (it wasn't that word, but that idea) Boyle had laid on Karlsson in Game 1. It's a brief reference, but it's in there, near the beginning.

If you check the TSN video page, there probably is a clip from Game 1, as well (don't know, haven't looked).

Also, was Dubinsky really "third man in"? Every player on the ice was in that pile within about a second

ah... I found the recap from gm 1 and they showed a brief clip of Karlsson getting a few punches to the face from Boyle. If that's all it was... no
