Outback Bowl: B1G #2 vs SEC #4

    For those of you expecting instant respect if we win this game, I have bad news for you. All you will hear is about how we beat the 4th or 5th best team in the SEC. MSU would be given credit for the win, but it would still be a "let's see how they do next year" mentality in the press. And you know what? That's fair. People outside our program see us like we do a school like K State. Having a couple good seasons is nice. But, perception doesn't change until that is the expectation and not the exception.

    What this DOES mean is that this win is essential to our National Reputation. If we win, we get a "great game by Sparty, let's see if they can keep it going". If we lose, well, we all know what we hear then.

  • I see what you're saying, but you're going a bit too far. UGA is a 10 win team from the SEC. The perception is that mid level SEC teams >>> top B10 teams. Back to back 11 win seasons and beating a very good SEC team will earn us significant respect.

    It's not apples to apples, but Boise St went to and beat Oklahoma in a BCS bowl. They have been great ever since and still get little respect. Even after beating Georgia this year and VT last year, they still get robbed of a BCS spot. I am aware of their strength of schedule, but if you want to talk about national respect, it's not that easy.

    Now, we have an easier chance because we get to beat traditional powerhouses like Nebraska, Michigan and Ohio State. I think a diet of big Big Ten wins would give you more respect than a bowl game.

    Boise is different. They play 2 tough games per year. So the perception is "they can do it a couple times per season, but they'd never be able to handle gauntlet schedules like the big boys."

    MSU handled a gauntlet schedule. But the perception is still that "MSU overachieves against a down Big Ten and gets spanked when they play good teams in bowls." Throw in a win over a very good SEC team, and we'll get tons of respect.

  • You obviously don't watch much ESPN. The #6 and up teams from the SEC are all better than the best B1G team, so it will be more impressive than beating Wisconsin. Duh.

    This would be an excellent win for MSU and credibility for the big ten. Big for MSU recruiting IMO.

  • The title of this thread is complete bs. This game is not being viewed as B1G #2 v. SEC #4 - it's being viewed as two conference championship game runners up. With the same overall and conference records. We're in the Outback Bowl - which is not given to the #2 team in the B1G. Whether we like it or not, MSU is in the 4th slated bowl position for the B1G behind two BCS games and the Cap One. That's how it's being viewed.

    MSU picks up tremendous respect if they win this game - especially here in the South (Atlanta) where local radio has already been very complimentary to MSU since the bowl matchups were announced.

  • There was a guy from the UGA board posting here the other day, answering questions about all things UGA-football. We all learned a lot from that discussion; I, for one, feel much better informed about our forthcoming opponent. The questions were astute and intended to draw out insightful responses. I hope everyone read and learned from those exchanges.

    They were impressive in the Georgia Dome. Very well coached and talented.
