PSU, they gone for at least four years

  • Trevor Barnes said...

Yeah, it was mentioned a while ago. Gotta be looking at institutional control, etc. Seems like a real lack of it.

"NCAA bylaws provide no basis for punishing institutions for crime. Before Penn State, the NCAA had no history of even investigating institutions based on criminal offenses perpetrated by administrators, athletes or coaches.

But NCAA president Mark Emmert detailed the accusations clearly in the letter. The NCAA is examining Penn State for a lack of institutional control and examining current and former administrators and coaches for unethical conduct. These two infractions are often pressed by the NCAA but have never been cited in cases involving criminal acts. Former Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and former vice president Gary Schultz face charges of perjury and failure to report suspected child abuse."

Thanks. I read an article where the author felt if the NCAA looked into it, they either drop it or give them the death penalty. Nothing in between. His rationing was how are tats and a buying a house for some kid's mom even close to being on the same level as allowing child rape on your campus? He makes a good point. Something like this--if everything talked about is detailed in the report--goes WAAAYYY beyond a couple of scholies and 2-3 years probation. No matter what PSU says, the coverup was made to save the football program embarrassment. The football program should pay, dearly.

"In 2007, after a widely reported incident where more than a dozen players crashed an off-campus party and started a violent brawl, Paterno appears to send an e-mail, through his assistant, to Spanier that says, 'I want to make sure everyone understands that the discipline of the players involved will be handled by me as soon as I am comfortable that I know all the facts.'

"Paterno's attorneys have said the coach didn't use e-mail. The exchange shows while he may not have had his own e-mail account, his assistant would still send e-mails for him."

    Ruh roh.

That's another issue, all together. What was JoePa able to coverup over the years that nothing to do with Sandusky? There is so much "lack of institutional control" they should write a book about it.

  • In addition to what is posted above, it is no one's fault but those that were in charge at PSU that Joe Paterno was so incredibly powerful. EVERYONE knew it and they stood by and let it happen. This just validates all those jokes over the years and confirms that Joe Paterno was a completely untouchable individual and when your football coach is untouchable, even to the administration, ya, you've lost institutional control.

... so did UofM in firing Fischer. That didn't make the NCAA go "oh, well here's your reputation back."

Nope, instead it was the death of a key figure in an ongoing criminal trial...oh wait.

I'm betting on a white wash. It will toe the PSU line that JoePa did everything he was obligated to. The Pres will be thrown under the bus and that will be the end of it.

I don't know. A former FBI director doesn't do his rep any good by giving a pass to a football program. Besides, this guy bit the hand that fed him while an FBI director, so I don't think he'll pull punches here. Could be wrong, but, hopefully, the victims are the "winners."

    What is "Justice" ?

I think the report will expose grandfatherly JoePa protected his turf, his football program like the meanest strongest bear in the woods. Like Paterno's not using text to commumicate. It wasn't because he was old fashioned. It was because his lawyer son and others had explained texts are forever and Paterno didn't want a trail. We will probably find out he was more involved after the Sandusky sighting beyond just reporting it to his superiors and we will probably find out there was a lot of suspicions about Sandusky that were acknowledged inside the program and never reported.

The NCAA may use this case to expand its input like the Feds use RICO as a one size fits all reason to sanction and PSU will probably get sanctions but no death penality (I didn't think they would get NCAA until I saw where Paterno was much more involved than he or the university let on)

  • From the report

The most powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children who Sandusky victimized," Freeh said. "Messrs. Spanier, Schultz, Paterno and Curley never demonstrated, through actions or words, any concern for the safety and well-being of Sandusky’s victims until after Sandusky’s arrest."

When good men repeatedly, REPEATEDLY do nothing, they are no longer good but now evil men.

That's a pretty twisted view. Am I evil for never trying to stop genocide in Rwanda or Darfur?

  • Speaking of twisted views.. You're not in charge of those committing genocides, are you? You have no means in which to stop what is happening in Africa. These were employees of the school and supervisors of those that helped cover up child molestation. They knew what was going on on their property and they had every chance to make a freaking phone call to the cops. They CHOSE to act like it never happened and then conspire to cover it up.

    That is the difference.

Except in this case, the men involved had the power to do something and didn't. Paterno, Curley, Schultz, and Spanier covered up numerous crimes. That is heinous.

I'm not sure Delaney can do anything about booting a school out of the conference, I would think that is more of the presidents of the universities decision, or whoever votes on letting a school in. Delaney is just the AD for the B1G, what real power would he have in this situation? He can't just stop scheduling them. Sports may be what drives the majority of the decision in allowing a school into the B1G, but it isn't the only deciding factor.

  • The idea that Sandusky woke up on may 3, 1998 and decided to molest kids is insane.

This has to go way further back, but the report really starts with that date.

I think people are misinterpreting what I'm saying; it was more a metaphysical question about how to define "evil." Jesus, I'm not defending the assclowns, and I can't wait to see them in prison. And of course, you nailed it; condemning someone as evil requires that they INTENTIONALLY choose to do something: in this case, ignore their requirements under the law in order to protect a friend and their institution.
