Phil Steele Preseason Top 40

yes..you are all right. The little giants FG game makes it 1-1. We were a little lucky to win that one. But the Cousins int the year before makes it 2-3 in favor of ND in the last 3 years. My point is that we don't "own" them when we have lost 2 of 3 and belittling them is kinda dumb. We could easily be 0-3 without a trick play. Glad we are not...but we are in no position to gloat after getting it handed to us by 20 pts.

But the year before that MSU won. And the before that MSU won also (2007) so make that 3-2 in MSU's favor in MDs tenure. Oh, and he's never lost at home to ND.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Not sure why you are laughing at ND. They kicked our asses last year. They've won 2 in a row against us. Just like that thread that said we own them...nonsense. We need to kick them hard this year because they've owned us for about 700 days now. Yes, 10 of 15 is great...but 2 in a row on the wrong side is not.

    You are a fuck up

  • Phil Steele has the worst top 5 I have ever seen. USC, Bama, and LSU are the top 3 end of discussion not even debatable.

FSU at number two and Texas being that high are both laughable

I don't get the UW spot. I think MSU is top 15, but it's not that far off.

tOSU @11 is a little odd too.

Yeah, having OSU, UF, and Texas as all top 10 teams when they all went 6-6 last year (Texas 5-7) is a bit strange.

Also, UNC at 13? Really? They suck dick every year. UCF at 15? Really? UCF is that good? Phil Steele would pick UCF to beat MSU on a neutral field? Ok...

I also think Stanford might fall off a cliff.

I seldom advocate that anyone get banned by the Rods, but Rodky you need to ban this Nucky schtick / troll. How this Nucky schtick has made it this far without getting banned is incomprehensible. To not even remember "Little Giants" is absolutely reprehensible.

Michigan's won 5 out of the last 9 against us, I guess Dantonio's a failure.

I think the real laugher is putting either FSU and/or Oklahoma ahead of U$C, Bama, and LSU.

he picked bama last year at this point shrug

I guess he had to put someone from the Big Ten around 9 and 11 so Wisky and OSU make the most sense there if you haven't been paying close attention. I'd probably put us 5 spots higher.

ND lost their best defensive and offensive players and will be starting a freshman QB...they are going to struggle.

He had them at #6 last year. At the same time, so did Athlons lol.

I figure MSU will be ranked around #15. Really, I'm fine with them being top 20; given the schedule, there's more than enough "big games" to have MSU ranked high; Boise, ND and tOSU all before October.

Keep in mind that this poll is how he thinks the final polls will look, which leans heavily on SOS (as in, weak schedules = higher rankings). He has a separate "power poll" for teams based on their raw strength.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Listen to him pick ND games on the radio if you can find someone interviewing him...it's laughable sometimes.

Like any other "prognosticator" you need to take most of what Steele says with a grain of salt.

2 years ago, during the 11-1 season he picked MSU's opponent to beat MSU for MSU's first 7 or 8 games on Tom Kowalski/Sean Beligian's radio show. He only picked MSU to beat Iowa. After he was wrong for the 7th or so time in a row he gave up picking MSU games on the show for the season.

He doesn't hate MSU, I just think he's biased toward tradition where he realizes it or not...especially when ND is involved. Though he is better than most in this regard.

Honestly, as a UM fan I'd rather see preseason polls like this. I think we'll have a good team but we'll have to earn it with the brutal schedule. The polls that have us top 10 are a little premature imo.

Phil Steele ranks his top 25 differently than most analysts. He takes schedule into account and tries to project what the top 25 will look like at the end of the season not necessarily by which teams he thinks are stronger than others. This is why his pre season polls end up being pretty accurate. Wiscy is getting a lofty ranking in a large part because of its normal light schedule especially the OOC portion which Steele knows Wiscy will come out at 4-0. MSU and UM both have 2 tough OOC games which Steele takes into account.

Keep digging and you're reach China. Eff you and your "trick" play. Putting your balls on the line in front of the entire nation is no "trick." It's having a pair you need a grad assistant to help you out with. We also could have easily been in the Rose Bowl the last two years, but we weren't. Wins are wins, losses are losses. We have owed ND the last decade or so. Deal with it.

Listen, it's not easy predicting Ohio State's record. They're in transition. Can you really blame Philly? OSU will be nowhere close to the top 10 this year. They'll creep into the top 25, but they're a year away.

Last year someone picked Ohio State to finish 6-6, which was incredibly accurate and prescient. Who was that?

I think tOSU loses at least @EL and @Madison. Who knows about the rest of their schedule, it depends on how fast they come around.

One thing to note is that MSU's schedule goes "tough, easy, tough, easy" for the first 7 games. For all the talk of a new QB/WR, those guys are going to be pretty well established by the time the @UM, @WI, Nebraska trio rolls around.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • God some of you guys are being insufferable douchebags this morning. Is it cause it's Monday? Fact is the last few years with ND it's been a close series. Two years ago we win in OT at home - great. Then last year we go into ND and get our asses handed to us. I remember most people on this board (including myself) being pretty confident going there last year (especially given our record at ND). It's going to be another tough game this year. Who GAF what the record is over the last decade? With that logic, any UM fan can say 6-4 over the last 10 years. And how exactly would most on this board react to that?

Valid points: we need to whip ND's ass at the point of attack and disrupt the timing of BK's offense. The problem is, everything he does is predicated on quick 3 step drops to counteract and defeat a defense like ours. Coach D' and Duzzi need to re-tool a little bit for that game I believe.(and they will) We have home crowd and will flat out get AFTER Rees' arse in that game. It'll be low scoring but barring injury we should win IMO

ND still has a QB question too. Rees might never play another down as ND's QB. Then your two starter candidates become Hendrix or Golson.
