Pickling

Anyone on here do any pickling? There is an awesome pickle stand on the weekends near my house with fresh pickles but they are kinda pricey. I was thinking it'd be fun to try doing my own.
Any tips or good resources? I usually get the half sour ones there - but I'd be interested to see what else I can do.

we do it at the end of every summer, it is super easy. we do both cooked and refrigerator pickles.

Get your hands on some tomatillos and pickle them shits, de-fucking-lishous.
Just remove the papery skin, rinse them and then 1/4 (or 1/8 the big guys). My favorite brine is apple cider vin with whole (toasted) cumin, coriander and yellow mustard seeds. A few cloves of garlic, peppercorns, a jalapeno split open, and a bay leaf also make a nice addition.

On best thing I ever ate, when they did the McClure's, dude said just keep the liquid in the jar and shove more cukes in there and let them pickle! Pickling is easy!

Making pickles is quite easy. Only reason I didn't make them this year was because my garden under performed.
I'm sure you can find lots of recipies online.

Keep in mind I'm assuming your homemade pickles would give you the same Marginal Utility as the ones you buy (meaning you could make them just as well/would enjoy them an equal amount you would enjoy the ones you buy) and also assuming you don't get any additional utility from making your own because it's "fun" or anything else or the utility you may get from knowing you support a local business or anything else folks buy things for.
I'll let you do the algebra.

I've done some every summer for the last 6 years and it's been great. There are plenty of books to help you get started. I'd recommend one by Chris Schlesinger.

Agree.
It's a fun project to do like pasties, ravioli, etc., - but like any labor intensive food prep:
1) have a good recipe
2) make a bunch of it
3) get a few people together to share the effort and product.
It takes alot of time and effort so you might as well make a bunch of them. Same mess for 10 as a 100.
