Pit Bulls - Bad Sign?

  • Pit Bulls are so cute and cuddly aren't they?

I am sure it was being trained to fight. Those are the only ones that are aggressive.

Why is it that people who own these can never seem to own just one?

All the statistics and arguments back and forth about the breed and physiological characteristics aside, why would one choose to own a pit bull and have them around their children when you could get a lab, st bernard, golden, or lots of other dogs who are well known to be great with kids and other animals?

Exactly and having children, I would also be concerned if a neighbor(especially bordering on my property) acquired a pit bull. I have a cousin that has a pit bull that is one of the sweetest dogs I've encountered and I also know a family in my neighborhood whose dog was mauled to death by the neighbor's pit bull after the pit bull dug under a fence to get to it. If I'm going to encounter a dog that may become aggressive, I'd rather it be a dog that isn't capable of killing me or my family members.

...but it's the owner not the dog. Golden Retrievers attack more people...
I am so sick of the argument for the pro-pitbull camp. I still have not heard of a Golden Retriever, Beagle, Poodle, etc. turning in their owners and nearly mauling them to death. I live in a city that outlaws these dogs and I LOVE THIS LAW.

Its not nearly as common but they really aren't the perfect dog.

    Its not always the breed.

  • I'm not gonna lie and deny that there have been a lot of pit bull attacks, but I also know that it is not the breed.

There are many factors that go into it with the main one being the owner. Yes, there are going to be times where a "perfectly normal" dog spazzes and that can happen with any breed (see link regarding golden retriever above).

Attached is a video of my apbt swimming in my girlfriend's parent's pool. This is the best dog I've ever known and I've (my family) had 5 German Shepards (my dad's dog of choice, always had a pair of them growing up), a westie, and a mutt and have been around all other kinds of dogs (I'm a dog lover, hate cats). My gf's neice (1) and nephew (3) will literally jump on her while she laying down, pull her ears, anything and she doesn't so much as blink. She'll take food out of your hand like melancholy grandma with no dentures in.

With all of that said... there are bad owners and bad breedings as I mentioned above. It's not a dog you just let do whatever it wants, and don't train. Loyal as they come and want to do anything for their "master" (alpha dog). The dog in the picture is Layla's (dog in the video) brother, Thumper. He lives with his father and used to be his mother until she just recently passed away. The owner has these dogs trained to a T. When he walks in the room, all 3 of them lay down instantly. They can be in the middle of anything (eating, playing, etc.) and they all just stop and drop to the floor. So like I said, you have to be the alpha dog (someone mentioned this earlier in the thread I believe). The dogs have to know that YOU are the boss, and if trained they are one of the best dogs on the planet.

  • My pit mix is by far the best pet I've ever had. Easy to train, obscenely loveable, great with kids, great with other dogs, and endlessly happy. She was a rescue at a no-kill shelter. She's blind and perfectly adaptable.

She is by far - by far - the most gentle of any dog I've ever been around.

It IS the owner of the dog. Any dog can be an aggressive dog if they aren't trained and socialized properly. Pits score better in temperament tests than many breeds, including beagles and poodles. They are some of the most loyal and friendly dogs you could ever hope to own if they've been raised in a good environment. However, they are very strong willed and energetic and require an owner who is willing to put in the time and effort to raise them right.

Awesome vid. I was thinking about positng the video of my 9-month-old "playing" with our pit mix. She was a shelter rescue as a puppy as well.

I wonder if the attention to Alpha is a strong trait with these dogs. My dog pays absolute 100% attention to me. She follows me around the house, listens to every word, and responds to my mood. If I'm happy she's happy, If I'm pissed (mostly at MSU sports on TV) she's remorseful. She's also picked up on my training amazingly well. We put her out in the front yard, and she doesn't cross the property line. It's funny to watch people walk down the sidewalk with ther dogs going crazy, and my dog just sits there and watches them lol

As long as your neighbors aren't stupid fucks, you don't have anything to worry about.

There's nothing wrong with pit bulls, it's the people who raise them.

For what it's worth, my daughter (an MSU trained vet) endorses this position. So I guess you need to focus more on the neighbor himself.

  • Per my previous post, these things are ticking time bombs. If one of my neighbors got one, I wouldn't let my son anywhere near the thing.

  • I hate these pit bull threads. The pro bit pulls (Bite + Pullers) just keep repeating themselves: "NOTHING wrong with the breed. It's the owners. If you don't raise them just right, then ..." Guys, logic! If you have a breed that has to be raised just right, then that breed is NOT the same as other breeds. Learn words like "proclivity" and "predisposition."

  • The problem with pit bulls is that they don't bite and let go. They bite down, hold on and rip. They can be the sweetest dog in the world, but if it decides to bite something it will do serious damage. Ghetto thugs and white trash dumbasses get these dogs because they are powerful and they can use them as a means of intimidation towards other people as if it somehow compensates for their small dick.

Oh, and yes, my avatar is taken directly from my Driver's License. I did wear a toupee for the shot; otherwise, it's pretty much exactly what I look like. This is it exactly. That video of the Golden attack on the previous page would've been much different had it been a pit. Instead of puncture wounds, you'd have crushed bones and possibly severed limbs. Notice the animal control guys bought the golden to the truck on a leash instead of a noose pole. Pro pit bull contingent keep bragging that they are fiercely loyal, which is fine so long as you're the one it is loyal to (and it's DNA tells it to only be loyal to one person - the Alpha Male). ANYONE else is a potential target for a gruesome attack. Anyone that thinks it's loyal to their wife or kids is crazy.

Do you believe all pit bulls should be put down?

    The Pantry

  • The Pantry said...

Do you believe all pit bulls should be put down?

Of course not. But I do believe that the law of supply and demand applies here. The more people who buy them, the more will enter the market. A certain number of those will get into the hands of "bad owners" (assuming that that's really the only risk), and a few more people will get mauled.

I know, some people here got their pit bulls at Animal Shelters, and therefore allegedly didn't feed the market for pit bulls. Maybe yes, maybe no. One thing that is certain is that once they admit a pit bull into their family, they seem to feel an obligation to legitimize the breed (read through this thread; it's not exactly a secret), which, again, assures that the breed's spread will continue unabated.

P.S.: As an aside, I wonder how many pit bull owners who wring their hands over the continuance of the breed are exactly the same people who roll their eyes when environmentalists talk about how many species are endangered by this or that specific construction project? I'd bet it's a sizable portion of them because, let's face it, the whole debate is about cultural values as much as anything else. People who like pit bulls like what they signify. It's not about preserving one of God's species, or whatever.
