Places to eat in EL

Swagath? I have never tried- I was tempted but it had poor reviews.

Mumbai has decreased their portion size. I'll give it a try. What dish do you go with?

I've only been for their lunch buffet. I don't know about poor reviews, but I like it and it is always filled with Indian customers so that must mean something at least.

Also, it was an Indian coworker who introduced me to the place.

They are putting in a Moe's Southwestern Grill where Flats used to be......add another notch on the belt of Chain Restaurant USA!!

Is Moe's that different than Chipotle, Qudoba, or Pancheros? Why does EL need another burrito, taco, quesadilla place? Big Ten Burrito and Georgio's Burrito both closed, why won't this?

because we are all stupid and only eat at chains....oh, and big ten burrito wasn't that good.

The golden rule in the restaurant biz, if something works, copy it.

I really doubt EL can support another fast casual pseudo-mexican place but it doesn't surprise me that someone else is going to try. A couple of months ago I read the rundown of 50 fastest growing chains in the National Restaurant Association's magazine. At least a quarter of them were 5 Guys/Bagger Dave's ripoffs.

    Good enough for me, thanks

  • We need a barbecue place. Doesn't have to have much. Just smoked ribs, brisket and chicken. Home made rubs and sauces. Sides of Cornbread, Coleslaw, potato salad and beans. Instead we get a thousand mexican places, 14 burger joints and 10 sushi restaurants. I am glad we have thai, but do we really need Taste of Thai, No Thai!, Thai 101, and Thai Kitchen?

Amen brother. A true BBQ joint that did things the right way would make a killing. Shit, Backyard BBQ is still around the area and that place is garbage.

  • It's nowhere near campus, but have you been to King of the Grill up by the airport? Tasty stuff. It's exactly what you described.

    Huisj

  • Definitely Peanut Barrell and/or Crunchy's. Sushi-Ya is my other go-to place on Grand River. Nothing beats Pizza House.

I actually really liked Mumbai the couple times I ate there (mostly at the Great Lakes Folk Fest), so don't count it out.

  • If you venture a little further on Michigan Ave. into Lansing, you could hit up the Soup Spoon Cafe. They got some GREAT food for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, and have a bar filled with Michigan beers,

    Nachopizzaguy

  • Reno's

What is that, a Titleist? A hole in one...

    For starters

Their hours are like 5pm to 4am.

You'll likely be the only ones speaking English in the entire place

The "menu" is just a bunch of 3x5 photos on the ceiling near the cash register.

The seating is incredibly cramped; low couches and mismatched chairs.

The stools at the counter are old toliets.

They have a huge flatscreen that constantly plays the Korean equivilent of Mtv.

Definatelty not for everyone but certainly the type of place I love. Good unique food, moderately priced and never lacking for atmosphere. Nothing closes out a night of heavy drinking like a plate of panfried dumplings and huge bowl of spicy beef noodle.

I'm going to assume you mean sit-down places.

Peanut Barrel or Crunchy's if you want a burger. If you're not particular about your Mexican food (their food is mediocre) but enjoy having a drink on a terrace, go to El Azteco. Dublin Square if you'd like some variety with the possibility of outdoor seating. Spartan Hall of Fame Cafe if you want to be surrounded by MSU memorabilia, but that's away from campus. LouHa's if you want a bazillion tv's and don't mind being away from campus. If you want pizza, then Pizza House.

Bad mouthing el azteco and I am out of down votes. I will be sure to pay this post a visit tomorrow.

You make it sound like it's a personal thing. It isn't... their food just isn't good. There's a reason the place has a 2.5 rating on yelp... are you going to downvote all the yelp people too?
