I read them because my daughter read them. First one was really good and they kind of went down from there. We will be seeing the movie and it looks like they did a great job on it starting with the cast.

I think the movie will play up the teenage angst and romance and tone down some of the graphically sweet violence in the book.

Entertainment Weekly just did a cover story on the movie two weeks ago. According to the writer of the article who was shown an advanced copy of the movie by the director Gary Ross:

"But if the footage Ross just shared represents the tone of the entire film, rest assured the movie will be every bit as raw and harrowing as the reading experience. The scene doesn't rely on splatter and gore but instead focuses on the frantic and vulnerable expressions of the kids in a desperate state of fight or flight, none more moving than Lawrence's primal crouch as she prepares to sprint for the cover of woods."

"Ross, who co-wrote the scripts, says, 'Is it violent? Yes. Do we back off from what it is? No, we don't. But i'm not interested in violence for violence's sake.'"

The article also states that the love triangle is not a big focus in the movie.

So anything with a non-adult protagonist = Twilight? You've got to be kidding me. That'd be like calling Ender's Game Starship Troopers + Twilight.

The Twilight aspect for me is the Peeta/boy Katniss hunted with/Katniss triangle. Did you read the post I quoted?

I don't really believe either part of this. Its going to be lame. At least Jennifer Lawrence is in it drool

Not to change the subject, but I think it's crazy that a movie that shows young kids killing one another and hunting each other down gets a pg13 and the bully movie just got an R solely for language. The mpaa has some interesting perspective on things.

I'm not sure Gavin Hood is the best director for a movie like this. I hope it's not special effects heavy... but it probably will be.

I just don't think it's fair to compare anything to Twilight unless the protagonist is utterly useless. Katniss actually does things and is quite competent, which isn't true of the Twilight girl.

  • For those considering whether to see the movie this weekend (whether you've read the books or not), Entertainment Weekly review linked below (gives the movie a A-).

I have always found EW's movie reviews to be spot on 99% of the time and extremely helpful in determining if I am going to shell out the money to see a movie in the theater, wait until it comes out on DVD/On Demand, or pass it over completely.

  • Read the first book. It's not bad, but I usually like futuristic dystopias (1984, brave new world). Decent story, easy read/bad writing but keep in mind it's for teens. The "love" story line is already too sappy in book one. Without reading the rest, if I had to rank it with other popular book trilogies/series...

Lord of the Rings > A song of fire and ice > The Dark Tower >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hunger Games > Harry Potter (probably) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Anything Else > Twilight

I'll probably see the movie because I want to do bad, bad things to Jennifer Lawrence.

  • Read only the first book (and about 10% of the second one). Writing was definitely made for the Young Adult/Teen Fiction audience. I was not a big fan of how choppy. The. Writing. Was. It. Got. Annoying. Plot was okay overall, though I'm not really the one to judge what is "decent" or not, especially since we divide literature (real books) and popular fiction. I only read the first Harry Potter book, and about a page of Twilight, so I'd probably rank them as follows: Potter>Hunger Games>Twilight. Someone said it's basically Brave New World + The Dangerous Game + Teen Fiction. I guess. It also kind of reminded me of Battle Royale for some reason. Out of the trailers, it seems the film will be better than any Twilight film, though I'm afraid that they'll up the teen romance for obvious reasons.

Edit: Yeah, Battle Royale is more than just a "reminder." Also, it seems they really upped the romance (no surprise).

  • It seems to just be really easily digestible, dystopian future, sci-fi. I've been curious about it because it sounds like something i would be into but i realized that almost every single person I know that is into it is a girl. I am not sure why.

This. When the people trying to convince me to read the book/see the movie, and that it's not for girls but for lots of people are my mom and two sisters, I'm skipping it.

Strong female main character is portrayed as being controlled and manipulated by a largely male cast, or shallow women who buy into the male-centered society. She struggles against them mostly powerless, using only her creativity and ability to make friends and eventually recover her weapon(s) to come out of the Hunger Games.

It follows a form I find very familiar in Greek myths of traveling to the underworld, but particularly in the Mesopotamian myth of Inanna's (Mesopotamian goddess of love (Katniss is centered in a fake and real love story), fertility (Katniss provides for her family by harvesting from the fertile land outside of District 12), and war (Katniss's skill with a bow and knife, as well as her success in the Hunger Games)) Descent into the Underworld.

Inanna's Descent is the feminine monomyth, and tends to resonate with women stronger than the masculine monomyth. Following that myth would certainly make it more likely to appeal to women and not be as appealing to men.

Me too. I've only read the first one, and it certainly isn't a model for "good writing." I guess if it gets kids reading, I'm all for it. My students can't get enough of the books. They are actually begging for reading time (we're reading it in class).
