Please explain this quote from the parent of an FSU recuit

  • wasn't there a kid last year that removed Michigan from his list of potential schools because hoke was insistent that he commit early and the kid wasn't ready to decide?

    it was a defensive back

and they tried crawling back to him late in the process

you scum bags can defend this methodology all you want - but the shine is going to come off the turd this year - and we are going to see what these dudes are really made of when they have to adapt / deal with adversity

Well, it's dishonest. And now that the kid knows that Hoke lied to him about one thing, he'll be less likely to believe what he says about other things. His subsequent commitment to FSU seems to indicate he's done listening to what Hoke is selling.

If your approach is to give ultimatum's, thats fine. If you back track on your ultimatums, you get exposed as a liar. I doubt very much this kid would ever consider UM now (obvious now, since once Hoke back tracked, the kid committed to FSU).

Maybe the kid liked FSU better and Hoke's approach had nothing to do with him signing with FSU.

This doesn't sound like someone who was turned off by Hoke.

Levenberry said he chose Florida State because it had the best program for his likely major — computer forensics, for a future career in federal law enforcement — and also seemed like a place where he could compete for playing time right away under a defensive assistant, Odell Haggins, with whom he grew comfortable with during the recruiting process.

“It was a hard, hard decision,” said Levenberry, adding that he did not make his mind up for sure until about an hour before the press conference. “I was thinking about it all last night whether it would be Michigan or Florida State.”

He may or may not have ended up at FSU regardless, but UM did tell the kid's dad they were just blowing smoke on his offer. That could put off the type of person who doesn't like getting jerked around.

  • I don't think the hard sell had anything to do with Levenberry's choice. I just don't see how some people can't recognize this is unquestionably a hard sell, complete with a retract.

  • I have no problem with their strategy. Whatever they are doing is working. I am very happy with coach D and our staff and players. We have done a great job of developing underrated players, but at some point um's talent might start to level the playing field.

Haha where did you call me out? With your edgy little quip at the top of the page? Nicely done while providing nothing to this thread thumbsup There was no spin. Levenberry's dad was quoted as saying the Michigan staff wasn't 100% truthful about how they went about recruiting his son. Nut up and call a spade a spade. They are hard selling kids to force their hands.

The only butthurt in here is/will be closet M fans swooping in to defend Hoke/staff and claim they wanted Gedeon and McCray more than a Top 50 recruit. You know, the same shit they always say.

  • How is this approach difference, from say, a basketball coach who says to three high school wing players, hypothetically from Detroit Redford, DePorres/Redford Convenant, and some kid from Georgia....."I would love to take all 3 of you, but can only take 2 wings in this class. Again, would like you all, but I can't, so the first 2 to commit I will take".

    what was his name?

    armani reeves

Roxbury (Mass.) Catholic Memorial athlete Armani Reeves shuffled his list again this past weekend, eliminating one of his top two teams in Michigan.

The 5-foot-11, 185 pound prospect said it was a tough decision, but he knew the time just wasn't right, adding that he didn't want to pressure himself into something that he could possibly regret down the road.

"Michigan wanted me to commit right now and I just wasn't ready, so I decided to move on," said Reeves. "I wanted to let them move on in their recruiting as well.

"When they wanted me to commit, I just told them I wasn't ready. I told them that if they needed to move forward in their recruiting and leave me out of it, then I was perfectly fine with it. I didn't want to put myself in a situation that I wasn't comfortable doing."

I don't know if this is an example of a "hard sell" or not but I don't see why it's a bad approach.

It's not a bad approach...we recently offered a recruit and let him know that the offer was reserved for him for a few days. It was up to the recruit to commit before then if he wanted to be guaranteed the scholarship spot, otherwise, they were going to accept other commits if they came in.

These aren't hard sells...these are honest and transparent negotiations.

If there was any dishonesty in UMAA's approach it may be that the recruit still could commit even though two others filled up the position for that class...I'm not sure if it's dishonest because I don't know the communication going on with the players that committed and the recruit in question. MSU filled up its running back recruiting already, but we also have a commit-able offer out to a blue chip running back. If that blue chipper doesn't commit to MSU, then we're closed at the position.

point is, it's not going to keep working for them once recruits realize

    a) they are full of shit,

    b) old man mattison actually held the ravens back and

    c) sissy boy shane lacks the intestinal fortitude to lead a team when the pressure is on

So if they had no problem with Hoke or the recruitment, why would Levenberry's father even feel the need to delve into what Michigan said about available spots when asked? Seems if there wasn't a problem then there would be no need to make a statement about it. There's definitely some base to that.

    Lunchables

  • I have no idea what the communications were between Michigan and Levenberry, but I have not read one thing to indicate pressure had anything to do with choosing FSU. FSU fans have been confident ever since his week long visit to FSU last month. I think Michigan fans were a bit optimistic on Levenberry. I know Michigan wanted 2 LB's but that changed when McCray committed.

As far as this being a hard sell, it is no different from what most, if not all college coaches are doing. If I am reading MSU people correctly, MSU has room for one more corner prospect. They have, I believe, 3 prospects for that spot. First come first serve. Same deal.

    nope

"we have one spot left, think about it, and we will keep in touch"

is not the same deal as

"if you leave here today without committing, you can kiss your offer good bye, we are moving on to someone else"

Probably was asked a question concerning it.

I don't see anything wrong with the quote even. He was told there were two spots. Two players committed before EJ. EJ was then assured he still had a committable offer to UofM.

you will see why it's a big deal next year - when recruits are fully aware of the tactic and don't cave in to the pressure to commit the first time they set foot on campus

the more this gets publicized the better - too bad we don't have a 247 lackey with State ties to do a full write-up on it
