    Where is that quote from?

Thanks in advance, I look forward to reading it.

How is this approach difference, from say, a basketball coach who says to three high school wing players, hypothetically from Detroit Redford, DePorres/Redford Convenant, and some kid from Georgia....."I would love to take all 3 of you, but can only take 2 wings in this class. Again, would like you all, but I can't, so the first 2 to commit I will take".

That's not what happened though. What happened here there were two slots and they told three or more kids first two in get it. OK, fine. Whatever. This kid was who they really wanted, but he didn't bite. So Michigan told them he could still come anyway after they got their two commits.

I think it's a bit unethical to create a situation designed to simply pressure a decision out of a kid. You're telling them if they don't commit now, he's out, but really they'll take him anyway because they want them badly. If you were thinking of sending your kid there, you'd have to wonder what else they've got up their sleeve.

Whatever. It's just a part of the game. This is only noteworthy because the kid's dad is quoted recounting how it went down.

you will see why it's a big deal next year - when recruits are fully aware of the tactic and don't cave in to the pressure to commit the first time they set foot on campus

the more this gets publicized the better - too bad we don't have a 247 lackey with State ties to do a full write-up on it

I know this is pointless, but as I said, Levenberry was a special case- the plan was 2, but McCray committed and the staff still wanted Gedeon and Levenberry. It's not like they then tried to pressure Levenberry into committing- from what I understand, they told him they would accept his commitment whenever.

I get the impression you are upset about Kugler? In that case, obviously he felt pressure to get the last OL spot- and once he committed, Michigan stopped interest in multiple top OL prospects including Pocic who UM had a very good chance at.

Figured you would be used to it by now.

That's not what his dad said. Michigan told him if you want that last spot, you better commit before it's gone.

    Man you really got me.

But yes, MSU in my opinion is the biggest game of the year for Michigan this year. It will be a very very difficult game to win- Narduzzi and Dantonio certainly seem to have figured out Denard.

  • Sorry if already posted, but the bigger question is what did he tell the 2 already committed?? That we are only taking 2 so you better choose quick? I would presume so based on comments to this kid. If so, how do those 2 (and those 2 coaches and parents) feel if the 3rd kid commits??? Now 3 linebackers when the others were just told sign fast because only 2.

These are the 2 things that will kill Hoke's credibility:

    1. when they find out their kid was told only 2 were to be taken at that position and more actually were.
    2. when they are told instant playing time and find they are behind one or two other FROSH day 1 (Pittman??)
    3. when they verbally commit early or try to commit at end of process and are told just prior to signing day it was not a committable offer since other better player was signed (Miles)
    3. when their scholly is pulled later for no reason other than not in the 2 deep (Saban)

Don't let facts get in the way. People are on a roll in this thread.

That's a good idea. The player didn't commit to FSU prior to Hoke accepting commitments for the allegedly only 2 scholarships set aside for 2013 LB's.

Father hears, reads, finds out umaa has gotten or will be getting its 2nd verbal. Father of player calls Hoke to ask. At which time umaa recruiting staff tells the father that what he had heard/read was true. They did have 2 2013 LB's commit but would still hold a spot open for him.

    Here's the quote:

“Michigan said they needed two linebackers,” said Eric Levenberry, E.J.'s father. “They told everybody, and they said, ‘If you want the position, you’d better be one of the first here, the first to commit.’ They did get two linebackers to commit. I gave them a call, and they told us the other kid was going to commit, but they would still hold a spot for E.J.”

Even the umaa apple polisher/recruiting reporter can't get the chronology right. The way I read it the player's father was checking to see if the door was still open in aa prior to his son comitting to FSU. He was told for whatever reason that umma would have that scholarship available instead of it being gone as they had claimed would happen.

Recruiting: Michigan misses E.J. Levenberry, shifts recruiting focus | Detroit Free Press | freep.com

Typically, when a college misses on a high-profile recruit at a given position, the coaches scramble to fill that need with another prospect. Thats not true in the case of Michigans pursuit of Woodbridge (Va.) C.D. Hylton linebacker E.J. Levenberry.

I can't remember who it was, but there was that one recruit who was visiting UM on friday or saturday and was supposed to visit MSU the next day, but never made it here because he committed to UM right on the spot. That one didn't seem quite right.

Eeesh! Walmarters always cause the real fans of the institution something to face palm about.

No logical flow in this guy's statement.

Because we offer a scholarship to a special teams recruit, therefore, the fans of our school have no basis to question the ethics of another school's recruiting practices.

    Yeah, that flows so naturally...roflmao

Roxbury (Mass.) Catholic Memorial athlete Armani Reeves shuffled his list again this past weekend, eliminating one of his top two teams in Michigan.

The 5-foot-11, 185 pound prospect said it was a tough decision, but he knew the time just wasn't right, adding that he didn't want to pressure himself into something that he could possibly regret down the road.

"Michigan wanted me to commit right now and I just wasn't ready, so I decided to move on," said Reeves. "I wanted to let them move on in their recruiting as well.

"When they wanted me to commit, I just told them I wasn't ready. I told them that if they needed to move forward in their recruiting and leave me out of it, then I was perfectly fine with it. I didn't want to put myself in a situation that I wasn't comfortable doing."

Michigan got an early commit from Anthony Standifer. Academics apparently led to a decommit from Standifer, the PSU meltdown occurred, and Hoke started recruiting Reeves again.

As for the Levenberry deal, its really hard to take your concerns seriously since MSU snatched up Shane Jones, who was told Michigan was full, and OSU snatched up Anzalone who was also told Michigan was full.

Hoke said that two linebackers would be taken and he would hold a spot for Levenberry and only Levenberry. That's why Anzalone was told not to visit. So your first point doesn't make a ton of sense, especially since Hoke told other kids that they were done at the position (except for Levenberry). I'm going to go out on a limb and assume Gedeon and McCray knew this, so it wasn't dishonest.

As for your second point, Hoke tells recruits that they have the opportunity to come in and compete for playing time and that the best players will play. That's why Countess started for Michigan as a freshman. Also, Michigan has horrible depth right now, so commits probably aren't that worried about the depth chart. Besides, if a player is worried about playing time I'm sure he'd be smart enough to not commit to a school that has a couple of other freshman committed at his position.

How is that relevant to the point? Hoke tried to put on the hard sell and the kid told them he wasn't ready and said they could move along. Doesn't change the fact that hoke is hardcore pressuring the kids into committing early.

  • It seems to be a very vocal minority that find what happened, or the tactic being used, to be wrong or unethical. Sure there was some pressure put on him/them, thats part of the business. They obviously felt strong enough about EJ, to leave an extra spot for him. Not the case with Pocic. I dont believe the tactics used had anything to do with his decision. First, it was widely rumored that his dad preferred FSU from the start, 2nd, uofm only got into the picture after FSU seemed to ignore EJ for a long stretch of time (that is based off of FSU posters opinions), 3rd, EJ himself said uofm not having his major played a big part in his decision.

For the few that think the tactic used was lying or unethical, none of you have provided anything to prove so, other than the jaded opinion of a rival.

I was responding to someone. Who cares if Hoke is selling the kids on dwindling spots? At least he isn't lying about the situation. Obviously he is doing something right with the recruiting class he has put together so far this year and last year.

He said there were two LB spots before Mike McCray came into the situation, then immediately after McCray committed Hoke told Levenberry that he could take his time and that he has a spot in the class if he wants it. This isn't a hard sell that backfired, just a kid choosing another school over Michigan.
