Because Sandusky left in 1999? shrug

Do we really know how far back the conspiracy and JoePa/Other University Officials knew about it?

The oldest written references found were from 1998, but Sandusky and Paterno have worked closely since 1968, and 2nd mile was founded in 77.

Penn State has been doing all they can to distance the current football team from JoPa and his regime. So they will very likely be moving it away from the football stadium. Since there is a sizable contingent of students and alums that still think that he was mistreated in the way he was fired, I expect that say that the move was to protect it. A nice out of the way basement room in the library would protect it.

What ever they do will be when the students are not around. Right after he was fired a rumor that the statue would be moved very quickly resulted in a few hundred student to "protect it" The week after the summer session ends sounds about right. I expect that they will not announce a move prior to doing the deed.

They could also do what um did with the felonious five banners and store it away in the archives until sufficient time has past to put it back.

they haven't done all they can...penn state is doing very little to remedy this matter appropriately. They will be paying huge amounts of money on this because they have done very little.

Yep...basically these states are saying that it's the children's fault.

They will leave the Joe Paterno statue up but they're going to have him look the other way.

Absolutely keep it up. Add a plaque providing context for all the good and bad he has done.

Trying to erase all memory of Paterno is simply childish thinking.

I agree- the plaque can detail his coaching accolades, and that he looked the other way while children were raped by one of his staff members. No one should forget this.

  • Honestly I'm surprised no one has defaced it yet. I thought some irate citizen would have thrown some red paint on him or spray painted him or something.

Is some misguided PSU fan pulling a Johnny Spirit round the clock statue watch?

I heard on the radio that PSU has a security guard watching it around the clock. Which is rich that PSU watches out for the well being of a statue after it failed to do the same for children.

Freeh said he looked into what he could find from before 1998, but found no evidence. He did not have access to Second Mile staff/records.

Wow, Second Mile should have cooperated fully with Freeh. What are they hiding?

    Perhaps this...

The Second Mile Took No Action After Being Informed Of Sandusky's 2001 Shower Incident

In a statement in November, the Second Mile attempted to address what they had known about Jerry Sandusky and when they had known it. Executive director Jack Raykovitz said he was informed only that an unidentified individual reported being s Freeh report indicates Second Mile execs might have been aware of a lot more than that.

That's inhumane! You can't make one person work 24/7.

This is something that I cannot get past: the possibility that there was much more than we will ever know about.

We know of the 8 specific victims that testified or had their parents notify the authorities. But I am assuming (without any true evidence -- sorry for speculating!) that the number of victims could be ridiculously high. Given the number of years, the amount of unsupervised contact, the people looking the other way for him, etc., it seems logical to me that he could have been 10x more horrific than we know.

His own adopted son announced that Sandusky abused him, for chrissakes. You have to believe that other kids (or now adults) are afraid/ashamed of letting people know what happened. Some other victims may have told their parents, but those kids' parents might even be choosing to remain silent.

My point is that I believe that we only know of a fraction of what was done. And that alone is beyond comprehension to me. Paterno's inactions led to a lot of those atrocities. I was debating the "statue must come down" argument based on what Sandusky was specifically guilty of. Thinking that a statue is on display to honor a person that could have prevented all those crimes and ruined SIGNIFICANTLY MORE than 9 lives makes me nauseous. It is despicable for the administration to keep it on display, and it is a huge slap in the face to all the victims of the crimes.

The statue must come down immediately.

Yeah. Leave it up but with a plaque or explanation. I don't like taking down history, even if it is ugly.
