Portable Basketball system vs. In ground

  • Looking at getting my kids a baskeball hoop for the driveway. Starting to price out the in-ground ones and after install we're in the $1000 range. Anybody have experience with Pro Shot or Goalrilla (Dick's sporting goods) in ground systems?

It seems the portable ones are $500 for good quality/review online. The expensive "portable" ones aren't very portable. Looking around the neighborhood some people have bad and good quality in ground systems and the same for the portable ones..

Leaning towards the portable stritcly because of the cost but want it to last for 10 + plus years

  • Remember that your kids will play with it for about 5-10 years. Unless you're planning on moving you'll be staring at it for another 40.

I'd definitely go portable, especially if you have space to store it in the winter.

  • My dad put an in ground hoop in for me and I can honestly say that it was the one thing they bought me that I can assure you they got their moneys worth.

I cant even imagine how many hours I spent in that driveway playing basketball. Even when I came home from college in the summers, I would wake up and shoot until I had to go to work. He filled the pole with concrete about 3 feet up, so the thing was very sturdy. It lasted 20 years until he finally wanted room for his boat and travel trailer and cut the thing off at the ground, but I cant imagine anything they ever bought me that I got more use out of and it was always ready when I needed it, no moving required.

Same here. My dad bought a bison goal (originally he bought it for himself) and then he put it up for me and my friends and we got hundreds, if not thousands of hours played on that hoop. Also, in ground allows dunking without worrying about the goal falling on you. lol

We have an in-ground system, and it's been very sturdy and reliable. We do have several neighbors who had portable hoops, and living in a cul-de-sac, it was nice that they could move theirs out into the street during the summer and stuff, but I know at least a couple of those ended up breaking over the years.

  • Only poor people buy the portable hoop.

    SpartanElement

  • We have had a goalrilla for about 10 years, and thing is as good today as it was the day we bought it. Well worth the money, and I still use it when I go home from MSU

  • Either portable or permanent, your wife will eventually back the car into it.

Does she also have the "pay attention to the beeping backup assistant assistant "?

Btw, go in-ground. A windy day like today knocks the portable version over and breaks it.

  • Heavy portable one, when your kids get older they are going to want to put it in the street for more room.

Only reason I could see going in ground would be if you were building a legit stand-alone court.

  • If you have the space, go in-ground. I live across the country from my parents and I still have my friends over to shoot around and drink beers whenever I go home. It's probably 10-12 years old and still going strong. Only thing we ever had to replace was the rim becuase my jackass friend lowered the hoop and bent it when he was literally doing pull-ups on the rim.

  • Had both, go in ground if it doesn't break the bank. Looks better, quality of the backboard is 100 times better. Plus on windy days like today the portables get blown over likely breaking the whole set up.

  • Definitely in ground, especially if you have the room on the driveway. They last longer and are safer.

Parents have an in-ground one that has been run into by a couple different contractors....just tied some rope around it and straightened out back out. With a portable that thing would have been toast

  • Have your neighbor put one in.

Just like so many of these sports devices, you are going to want to see it go away after some kid screws up your car or gets hurt.

  • Spend the extra money, and get an in-ground job. Gorilla, Bison, etc. I had a Gorilla at my home in Tulsa, best $2K I ever spent. 72" backboard, 6x8 post

Also, don't go with the lower end backboard material. The cheaper plexiglass. When I bought, you had 3 choices - a thinner plexiglass, a more firm acrylic, and glass. I went with glass.

If you ever need to move it for any reason, the mount bolts onto anchors.

$2000?? whoa Shit. I was thinking of putting in an adjustable one for my oldest son, who loves shooting baskets. But that's more than I expected.

You can spend as much or as little as you want. A few hundred for a basic model, or a couple thousand for a high end competition quality unit.

Keep an eye out for sales, we got a good Goalrilla system from Dick's for 1/2 that price.
