Portable Basketball system vs. In ground

    $2000?? Shit. I was thinking of putting in an adjustable one for my oldest son, who loves shooting baskets. But that's more than I expected.

    $2000 is way too much, you don't need a 72 inch backboard, i'm looking at 60inch, 5 x 5 pole, 3/8 inch thick plexiglass, in ground for $850 + $260 for installation

    Seems one of the best portable systems is in the $500 range

  • Portable sucks ass. Your kids will set it to dunking height and break it. Put it in the ground, and get out there and get some exercise yourself.

    Yeah I plan on using it a lot, which is why I want a good quality one but i'm not rolling in the dough like 99% of this board so 1k is a lot IMO

  • My dad got me a permanent backboard for my 8th birthday and I got thousands of hours of use out of it. The setup is still in the driveway.

    And even they feel cheap about it. Go in-ground. My neighbor's portable one fell down in the wind all the time and finally broke.

    Just like so many of these sports devices, you are going to want to see it go away after some kid screws up your car or gets hurt.

    OK, Debbie Downer. I'll echo what others have said, my parents never paid for anything that got more use than our in-ground hoop. It's been there more than 12 years, and when I lived at home, there wasn't a summer day that went by without me putting some shots up. My parents loved it in the winter because I would always clear the driveway so I could shoot. Now my brother uses it all the time, and I still do when I go home.

    Not to mention, I saw one of my first sets of breasts after betting a girl I could hit a shot down the sidewalk a ways. Good times.

    Looking at getting my kids a baskeball hoop for the driveway. Starting to price out the in-ground ones and after install we're in the $1000 range. Anybody have experience with Pro Shot or Goalrilla (Dick's sporting goods) in ground systems?

    It seems the portable ones are $500 for good quality/review online. The expensive "portable" ones aren't very portable. Looking around the neighborhood some people have bad and good quality in ground systems and the same for the portable ones..

    Leaning towards the portable stritcly because of the cost but want it to last for 10 + plus years

    Dig the hole and pour the cement yourself. It's not difficult and you'll save yourself a lot of money.

    I agree, I'm no do it yourself wiz, but found installation surprisingly easy. Its not like the old days when you had to set the pole in he cement. You set a base in the cement and bolt the pole onto the base.

  • My dad mounted ours on the roof so it was centered over the driveway. He then used highway paint to paint a lane with the tick marks, and a three point line...all to spec (with an F logo in the lane). Put flood lights in the tree next to the driveway so we could play at night. It kicked ass and we were out there all the time.

    The portable ones are shitty....a lot of times the backboard is very small, it's not the right height, and the ball doesn't bounce very true off them (ie they're very soft).

  • Definitely go in-ground. Goalrilla systems are great. I would highly recommend them. They have a 4 bolt system that makes it not so hard to move if you ever move. They have thicker poles than other systems. The glass is good quality.

  • Just had my ProShots installed today and I got the 5 x 5 poll with 54" glass. It works for us...my boys are young 5 and 6 and we probably won't stay longer than 3 years here. Paying an extra $200 for 6 more inches of glass wasn't worth it to me...maybe if I planned on staying in my home longer. Total cost in stalled will be about $950.

  • I can't believe people pay for installation. Part of the fun is helping dad set the pole than going crazy for a week until the cement hardens and dad has a day off to attach the backboard.

  • In ground. My parents hoop lasted 20+ years. It was used everyday in the summer. I got to bring it down last year. Alot of good memorable moments. One on one games til dark with my brothers.

    Sometimes you have to just write the check. Is 5 hours or my weekend better than writting a check for $250 to have it installed? I use to cut my own grass because "I'm a man Damn it!" Now I pay a guy $23 a week and have 3 extra hours on the weekend to doing other more important stuff

    And weren't you just complaining about a grand being a lot of money to you? Why don't you just cut your grass for 10 months to save the money?

    Thanks for your understanding....50+ hours a week working, 3 kids so let's see maybe I could spend that extra 3 hours every Saturday hanging with them. Not sure where you live but the grass mowing season in Michigan is 7 months tops so I spend around $500 a year.

    Never said I was broke just think 1K for a basketball hoop is a lot to drop at one time.

    Anything else you'd like to critique?
