Portland's former #1, Oden out for year, another microfracture

  • boozhoo said...

he hasn't played since 2009...it's going on 3 years. and he's played exactly one season's worth of games since being drafted. Sad.

Would be sadder if he had stayed at OSU for another season and the microfractures became this big an issue before he signed his 2 contracts.

Rookie contract covered 4 years '07-'08 thru '10-'11
He was paid $4.66M / $5.01M / $5.36M / $6.76M Was scheduled to get $8M but he negotiated a much smaller contract in Dec '11 when it looked like his knees weren't improving.

  • The night before the 2007 Indy 500 I was having dinner at a resturant in the Broadripple area. Seated about 5 feet away from me at the next table was Oden and various executives from the Trailblazers and Nike. I could over hear the conversation where they were telling him they were going to select him with the 1st overall pick in the draft. I could have save the millions of dollars by advising them against it or poisining Oden's food.

    I know..cool story bro

  • Is Oden from Indy? We saw him a few times when we were down there for the BTCCG. And yes he looked like a retired NBA player, not someone 8 years younger then me.

  • Sad to read this. Ironically enough, a friend of mine and his GF were in Vail over Christmas break on a ski trip. They stayed at some ritzy resort/lodge, and to their surprise upon entering the hot tub/jacuzzi area, there was none other than Greg Oden and a trainer of his. They ended up hitting it off and throwing down a slew of drinks over the next few hours. They said Greg was in good spirits, and was looking forward to going in and getting "cleaned up" in anticipation of joining the team late this season. Guess the dude threw back a "ton" of whiskey and cokes, and was a super nice kid.

I definitely feel for the big man. Just don't see anyway he ends up with a career that lasts another year or two -- let alone a productive one.

When Oden got drafted, they called him a once in a generation talent

    They never said which generation...

Danny Manning wasn't 74 years old.

Oden has only one shot at staying in the NBA now...he needs to end up in Phoenix, let the doctors who have kept Grant Hill and Steve Nash productive take a crack at him.

It hasn't been the doctors in Phoenix. It's been Nash's regimen that Hill adopted when he joined the team.

Not uncommon for 50 year olds to get fractures. He looks like someone's grandfather.

Seriously, he could pass for Morgan Freeman in this pic.

  • I was never a big fan of the diesel, but it still amazes me is what a freak of nature Shaq was--so strong that he played basically injury-free for 15+ years in the NBA.

    Spartan Dave

  • I wonder if he is thinking about going back to school.

hoke- to alter or manipulate so as to give a deceptively or superficially improved quality or value.

    The Doctor

  • Makes me wonder about Oden's bone density that is often related to childhood nutrition and leg strength.

To be 23 and have 3 microfractures doesn't sound promising as a middle aged guy just walking around much less trying to play high level basketball into your 30's.
