Post a live song that blows away the studio version

  • Btothejizer said...

I agree seeing people live for that reason is worthwhile. When it comes to recordings, I would just much rather prefer the studio version every time. I could see trying to experience the live performance by playing it back, but 99% of what makes a live performance is being there IMO.

You must have bad taste in bands if they can't sound as good if not better live than their recorded music. In live music, the bands can play the song at a different pace, with different instruments, try new effects, change some things up. Just because a song was recorded in a studio and may sound great in that setting, doesn't mean it's the best way that song can be heard.

  • I'm not a huge Dave Matthews Band fan, but the live version of Two Step from Listener Supported is pretty awesome.

Also, the live version of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (with the symphony) from Dream Theater's Score DVD is great.

  • Any Opeth song Still Life and earlier, where the production values and voice quality are dramatically improved. I like Elton John's more recent live versions over his perfect voice era studio work. I just feel it resonates more with that gravel. Also AIC'S Nutshell and Over Now are incredible on the Unplugged album.

I'll admit I kinda overlooked Nutshell (and the entire Jar of Flies album) until Unplugged. The unplugged show really showcased the greatness of Nutshell and No Excuses.

Speaking of Opeth, I've always thought their live renditions of Hope Leaves (from both Lamentations and Live at the Royal Albert) are incredible. Actually, the performance of the entire Damnation album live on Lamentations is amazing.

  • Paul McCartney, "Maybe I'm Amazed" (live - Wings Over America...better than studio - McCartney)

Barenaked Ladies, "Brian Wilson" (can't remember either album name, but live destroys studio)

The Band, "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" (live - The Last Waltz...better than studio - The Band)

I agree- the live versions keep my attention much better. It's a pretty low energy album, so the live versions "liven" it up a bit.

  • The greatest rock and roll song ever recorded is, of course, T-Rex's "Twentieth Century Boy." But the live version is slighly better if only because it is on video and the overpoweringly hypnotic guitar riff that drives the song is punctuated by Marc Bolan's rhythmic tossing of his corkscrew curls.

Jar of Flies they're just swimming in reverb. The unplugged versions let you hear their voices and guitars shine through.

  • I absolutely loved these guys in my teen years. You can barely hear the band over the crowd once things get going. Nobody will ever convince me that the best live shows are not crowded, sweaty, loud punk shows.

The J. Geils Band - Must of Got Lost (Live...

Bad Boys from Boston, The J. Geils Band's famous Live Version, from their 1976 landmark "Blow Your Face Out," with frontman Peter Wolf's spoken, rap-like, intro to one of their greatest hits. Certainly a classic rock staple! Lyrics: (Spoken) Now hold on, this song has a little introduction to it It ain't supposed to be sad, though you might feel it that way It's a song about desperation Every now and then we do get desperate This is a song about L-O-V-E And if you abuse it, yer gonna lose it And if you lose it, yer gonna abuse it And if you abuse it, you ain't going to be able to choose it 'Cause you ain't going to have it further on down the line Things ain't going to be so fine Yer going to be sitting there on your little machine Tryin' to look and keep it clean You're going to be home playing bingo all night all alone That's why you're sittin' there by the telephone And you know that she ain't going to call you! So you put on the TV and you're watchin' Johnny Carson Segueing right into the "Tomorrow Show" But that don't got the go So you turn it off, ya turn on the radio The radio don't seem to get the click So you say "Hey man, I can't lickety split" You start to open up a little book And there's somethin' there you got to overlook And you say "Baby! You know there's somethin' on my mind!" You say "Baby there's somethin' on my mind!" I know that you're home, and I know you ain't all alone!" So you start walking over to her house You get over to her house And you walk over to her door and you start poundin' on her door And you say "Open up the door bitch This is Wooba Gooba with the green teeth, let me in!" Well, she opens up the door and then you just kinda walk up to her And say "Baby", (Say Baby!) You look up, way up at her green mascara And you say "Oh my darlin', You know her and me was at the party as friends Do not believe what they say That's only gossip that they tellin' ya down the wisecracker line" You say "Darlin'!" Take your big curls and just squeeze them down Rotumba" What's the name of that chick with the long hair? (Rapunzel!) I'd say "Hey Rapunzel! Hahaha Hey Raputa! (Raputa the Buta!) Hey Raputa the Buta! Flip me down your hair and let me climb up to the ladder of your love!" 'Cause this is Wooba Gooba sayin' to ya "Love comes once and when it comes you better grab it fast 'Cause sometimes the love you grab ain't going to last And I believe I musta! You know I think I musta!! You know baby I think I musta!!! You know I think I musta!!!!! I Musta Got Lost!!!!!! (Sung) Never thought about tomorrow Seemed like a long time to come How could I be so blind, baby Not to see you were the one I let you slip on from me baby I let you walk on by Refused the love you had for me I refused the love and I let it die Musta got lost Musta got lost Musta got lost - Somewhere down the line Musta got lost Musta got lost Gave away them days you were mine Don't know why I let you leave me Honey, I don't know Say it's hard to see love coming baby But honey I have a way of seeing it go Musta got lost! Musta got lost! Musta got lost - Somewhere down the line Musta got lost! I got lost! Givin' away the days you were mine Love can be a sweet thing Girl, I just don't understand Made a game outta lovin' you And now I hold the losing hand Musta got lost Musta got lost Musta got lost - Somewhere down the line Musta got lost I got lost, girl Givin' away the days you were mine I just don't understand it, I just don't understand it I just don't understand it And I musta got lost Musta got lost Musta got lost - Somewhere down the line, hey! Musta got lost, baby! I got lost, girl! Givin' away them days you were mine Musta got lost I got lost Musta got lost - Somewhere down the line Musta got lost Oh I got lost, girl Givin' away the days you were mine Oooh I got lost! Double crossed You're lovin' - give it to me on the organ! I said you're love Got me higher than I ever been lifted before I said you're love Got me higher than I ever been lifted - Ooooooooh!

One of the best acoustic concerts I've seen. +1

Oasis (minus Liam) was also excellent on MTV Unplugged... ahhh, the days when MTV actually cared about showing great music.

  • 1980-1994 wasn't a good time for studio recordings. "In the Air Tonight" ushered in a decade of the "gated snare"... and bad drum machines.

Lately I've been digging the remastered Bob Marley concerts... so much more energy in these performances than their studio counterparts.

Because Noel is always better than Liam:

Noel Gallagher is my Jesus, but "always" is overstating it a bit. I've never heard Noel sing Supersonic (only one example) and thought that it was better than Liam singing, they have very different voices that are best suited for different stuff. That said, the MTV Unplugged with Noel singing lead because Liam wanted to fake a sore throat and heckle from the balcony is all great stuff. I wouldn't probably say that most were better than the studio versions, but tremendous nonetheless.

My nomination (and I could have chosen a lot of different Hendrix songs, best live performer ever in my opinion):

EDIT: arfabe beat me to the Oasis Unplugged, well done sir.

Liam has a much angrier voice... probably better suited for Oasis's early stuff. I've never heard Noel sing Rock 'n' Roll Star but I can't imagine it would be nearly as good as Liam's version. Liam is more suited for stadium rock, whereas Noel has a better voice for acoustic stuff (hence the Unplugged concert being so good with Noel on lead vocals).

That being said, Noel was the guy writing all the songs and he really was the talent behind Oasis. Oh, and I heard him sing Supersonic live in Royal Oak about a month ago and it was fantastic:
