Post a live song that blows away the studio version

Liam has a much angrier voice... probably better suited for Oasis's early stuff. I've never heard Noel sing Rock 'n' Roll Star but I can't imagine it would be nearly as good as Liam's version. Liam is more suited for stadium rock, whereas Noel has a better voice for acoustic stuff (hence the Unplugged concert being so good with Noel on lead vocals).

That being said, Noel was the guy writing all the songs and he really was the talent behind Oasis. Oh, and I heard him sing Supersonic live in Royal Oak about a month ago and it was fantastic:

I agree 100%. I've heard Noel's acoustic version of Supersonic (I want to see him play the High Flying Birds stuff so bad, can't wait for him to come back to Detroit when I actually have money to go), and it's excellent, but I still prefer the studio version with Liam on vocals.

There's no doubt that Noel was the talent in Oasis. The Beady Eye album was better than I expected (though it only had a couple songs I care to listen to more than once, The Roller is a favorite), but Noel's High Flying Birds album was fucking gold. Right up there with Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory if you ask me.

  • I'll probably get downvoted like hell for this, but whatever.

From 12:20 through the remaining 22 minutes left of this version of You Enjoy Myself is pure musical bliss. Quite possibly the greatest live version of it. Simply incredible.

Noel Gallagher is my Jesus, but "always" is overstating it a bit. I've never heard Noel sing Supersonic (only one example) and thought that it was better than Liam singing, they have very different voices that are best suited for different stuff. That said, the MTV Unplugged with Noel singing lead because Liam wanted to fake a sore throat and heckle from the balcony is all great stuff. I wouldn't probably say that most were better than the studio versions, but tremendous nonetheless.

My nomination (and I could have chosen a lot of different Hendrix songs, best live performer ever in my opinion):

I've been listening to quite a bit of Hendrix lately; my oldest son really likes him. Of course I remember what a monster Hendrix was, but I had quite forgotten (or never really appreciated) just how good Mitch Mitchell was on drums.

EDIT: arfabe beat me to the Oasis Unplugged, well done sir.

Yeah, definitely an exaggeration on my part to say that Noel is always better than Liam. There are songs that are perfectly suited for each.

The Tibetan Freedom Concert version of Cast No Shadow just blows away the studio version though. The studio version with Liam sounds like filler. Noel with just a distorted electric guitar turns it into one of my favorite Oasis songs.

Disagree on Rage Against The Machine, and they're one of my all-time favorite bands. Songs like "Bulls On Parade" just didn't have the same punch when played live. And even when the Morello, Commerford, and Wilk were flawless (99 percent of the time), De La Rocha was always a bit of a weak link. His vocal style -- especially the screaming -- didn't hold up in a live setting.

Maybe it was a show by show thing but both times I saw them they were on fire and hitting on all cylinders.

Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Pink Floyd live at Knebworth (1990) Rest in peace, Richard Wright (28 July 1943 - 15 September 2008), Syd Barrett (6 January 1946 7 July 2006) Remember when you were young, You shone like the sun. Shine on you crazy diamond. Now there's a look in your eyes, Like black holes in the sky. Shine on you crazy diamond. You were caught on the crossfire Of childhood and stardom, Blown on the steel breeze. Come on you target for faraway laughter, Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine! You reached for the secret too soon, You cried for the moon. Shine on you crazy diamond. Threatened by shadows at night, And exposed in the light. Shine on you crazy diamond. Well you wore out your welcome With random precision, Rode on the steel breeze. Come on you raver, you seer of visions, Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

Maybe it was a show by show thing but both times I saw them they were on fire and hitting on all cylinders.

Don't get me wrong -- they put on an awesome show, and in their day they rocked harder than any band on the planet. I saw them at the Palace in 99 and had tickets to the Rage/Beasties show at the Silverdome before that tour went down the tubes, and my 17-year-old self -- spending hours with a modded guitar and a Whammy pedal trying to learn Morello's guitar parts -- was crushed when they broke up.

They were knock-you-on-your-ass incredible live, but I don't think individual songs were better on stage than they were on the albums. What I said about Bulls On Parade is sorta like Smells Like Teen Spirit -- no matter how hard they play, there's no way the guitars and drums are going to sound that huge and crisp at a show.

And Zack de la Rocha just couldn't pull of some songs live. Bulls On Parade, Bullet In The Head, Freedom ... basically any vocals that were supposed to be a sustained scream turned into a shortened yelp.

  • OK, this one's cheating a bit, because the album version is live. Still, it's great primal rock.

    U2 Live Aid, 1985.... Bad

    You win the thread...IMO.

I first heard that version on the Wide Awake in America EP that I bought at FBC my senior year of high school ('85). Completely amazing.

I must say, I was really disappointed that U2 didn't perform "Bad" at SS last summer. When the main set ended, I was hoping they'd perform it for an encore. pray "Bad" is hands down my favorite U2 song and to not hear it live the one and only time I'll ever see them in concert left me feeling empty. upset
