Like it or not, Ann Arbor is a great city. For people looking to relocate to Michigan, it's probably the best we have to offer.

  • Of course there's a Pure Michigan ad for Ann Arbor: The governor is a scUM grad and still lives in the area.

It is a 50/50 cost share thing from the state's Pure Michigan travel campaign. Ann Arbor was not selected over any other area, they just took the initiative to apply and participate. Any city or region in the state is/was eligible to participate and develop a specific and targeted plan, but they have to pay 50%. To date, the four locations in Michigan that are participating are Traverse City, Ann Arbor, Mac Island, and the Greenwich Village cluster.

This four make sense to me. There are not many other regions of the state that have a out-of-state tourism attraction draw. I would think the U.P. could throw something together, but they would never get along long enough to package it. The west side of the state could as well, but not sure they need to given the buzz there during the summers.

Do yuo just see Ann Arbor in the title and try to be cute about it with your bumps?

I've seen the commercial in Miami, I think mostly on HGTV, but I know I've seen it a few times just recently.

It's a nice town, but a national ad campaign to get people to visit there?

I heard the Pure Michigan - Monroe ad on the radio. Never been to Monroe but I'd venture a guess that AA is a nicer town, you know if you got rid of all the scUM.

    EDIT:

BTW - local visitor and convention bureaus or chambers of commerce typically help fund these adds - which is why they have various cities or areas targeted.

The AA ad is running regularly down here in Texas. The first time I saw it, I started laughing. I'm from AA, and I've never thought of the city as a tourist destination. What the eff would you do there??

"Hey kids, how about a week in Ann Arbor this summer?? Doesn't that sound great?!? We could stay at Weber's Inn where a coach named Bo Schembechler used to host his radio show. We could get a tour of the big stadium. We could dine al fresco at one of those pretentious cafes/restaurants downtown...and...and....well, that's about it, really."

It's a weekend drive trip, not a fly to destination.

    Perhaps West Michigan?

Holland, Grand Haven, and now Beer City USA Grand Rapids. Heck why not throw Saugatuck in there too

  • I don't have a problem with it. Ann Arbor is a nice town and Michigan is a good school.

Let's not be those who can't seperate the schools from the athletic departments.

  • They run that Ann Arbor shit all over MSNBC. They even do a weather report for Ann Arbor on the Daily Rundown because AA sponsors it.

It's really annoying. Given what a shit hole everyone things Detroit, Downtown Lansing, and Flint are it would be sweet if they gave them some love instead of the douchiest city in the state.

I can separate the town from the school (and the athletic department).

I just find it somewhat comical that they are trying to promote Ann Arbor as a tourist destination in a national ad campaign.

What market are they trying to hit? Families with young kids? Single, bar hopping, music, festival goers? People that like expensive sandwiches?

  • That ad has been running for awhile. I have nothing against Ann Arbor, it is a decent town with nice shops. Heck, I wish EL had an art house theater like they do. Having said that I do think the ad is kind of tacky especially when you see the ad out-of-state. (I see it on CNN here in Florida all the time.) As if the other 49 states don't have cities and towns like AA with nice shops. Pure Michigan should stay focused on things that either make Michigan truly unique that would bring people on vacation to Michigan: The Great Lakes, Sleeping Bear Dunes, etc. or if you want to go commercial advertise popular things like a tourist town such as Frankenmuth or an amusement park such as Michigan's Adventure (as run down as it is/was). I don't get trying to make a nice city out to be some great tourist attraction.
