Pure Michigan: Ann Arbor (Zingerman's Deli)

  • Can't a fella just like what he likes?

I have been to both numerous times also. It is not even a fair fight. You are part of the 1% to think this.

And that's fine that is some people's opinions. I'll enjoy my sandwiches more, get a better value, service, and portion size, not have to deal with the hundred douchebags lined up so they can say that they ate at Zingerman's, and everyone gets what they want.

  • Golden Harvest > Zingerman's

That being said it is quite delicious, but the prices are way too high for what you get.

  • Is Zingerman's like an Apple Store? lol

Having been to both numerous times, I can find nothing special about Zingerman's

Next time order #28 Randy’s Routine
Zingerman’s smoked whitefish salad, scallion cream cheese & tomato on pumpernickel bread.
    $12.99 / $14.99

That really doesn't sound like anything that I would ever order. I only go to Zingerman's now when family or friends come in from out of town and they just have to go there because they heard about it.

  • I've had a lot of great food in my life and Zingerman's Deli is, hands down, the best deli in the state. Hell, the Midwest, even. They really care about what goes into their menu, it's all natural, and fucking delicious. It's also an insanely cool place. Camp Bacon? Hell yes!

Overpriced ... maybe by about 15%. But I can live with that.

The Roadhouse is also good for dinner. They have some really solid chef talent go through there and the customer service is second to none. But I won't rave too much since there are other good dinner establishments in AA and the state.

I agree with what another poster said. If Zingermans was in EL it would be an institution. No one would speak ill of it for fear of losing their Spartan card.

Here is Maize N Blues's menu. They beat Zingermans on price and that is it.

why do 2/3 of their sandwiches have "egg" on them?

$15 for a sandwich is only 15% too high? that sandwich better come with a blow job for $15.

There is certainly an element of that. People do go there because it's supposedly cool.

That said, the food is good.

Let me guess, you also think Chipotle is too expensive because Taco Bell sells $2 burritos?

  • Went to Zingerman's once to check out their praised reuben. Tasty, but I'll never go back. Stood in line for 20 minutes for a sandwich that was cold by the time I got it (20 minutes after ordering) AND less than half the size I expected after shelling out $15. F that

Well 10 out of about 80 different sandwiches have egg on them. Including the ham and egg sandwich lol.

Well recommend it to someone who's from out of town. It's special.

Zingerman's isnt a Jewish deli, its just a deli. With that said, its the 2nd best deli in Ann Arbor, behind Maize N Blue. True Ann Arborites know this. Crappy hippy want to be UofM students who dont know any better, love Zingermans.

That is an odd claim. The owners are Jewish. It is a deli. The offer great Jewish delicacies. Zingerman's is without a doubt a Jewish deli. And the food is great.

Yes, it is over priced. Whaddya expect?

That said, this is the most purely local spot ad in the entire Pure Michigan campaign, which in general I think is outstanding. And I think this ad makes absolutely no sense at all.

Some UM person made this ad happen. The Pure Michigan campaign is supposed to bring tourists in. Ann Arbor is a great town. I love it. It is only a tourist town for the Ann Arbor Art Fair3 days a year, and football days. It is not a tourist town. Traverse City is a tourist town. Ann Arbor is not.

Some UM hack made this ad happen.

  • I don't know how any of you can step foot in that stink town, let alone spend the time to eat at a restaurant there....I'll spend my food money elsewhere thank you

A Jewish Deli is a deli that is Kosher. At the very least a Jewish Deli wouldn't serve any pork products. Regardless, its kind of just semantics in 2012. As I mentioned previously, world famous formerly "Jewish" delis are no longer kosher (Katz and Carnegie both serve Ruebens), so no big deal.

Zingerman's is a good deli, its just not the best deli in Ann Arbor, and the pretentiousness of the majority of their clientele, coupled with the fact said clientele (mostly yuppies who ruined Ann Arbors counter-culture atmosphere when they moved to AA in the 90s instead of Birmingham, and spoiled East Coasters who will turn around mid conversation at Rick's AA when you mention you go to State and not UofM) who don't really know Ann Arbor prop up Zingerman's as the pinnacle of classic Ann Arbor causes me to cringe like nails on a chalkboard when I hear people mention it.

  • I had a great customer service experience from Zingerman's this past week-end.

I sent a Gelato gift basket to friends that delivered last Friday. Unfortunately I sent it to my friends former address. I called Zingerman's, acknowledged my error and asked if they could soften the financial blow of sending out another order to the correct address. They understood the mistake and made me a great offer to resend a replacement gelato basket to my friends correct address. I thought it was really cool of them as it was my mistake. Timely to share my cool story as this thread existed.

In all seriousness, i was very appreciative of the great customer service. By the way, how is Zingerman's Gelato?

  • Zingerman's = bakery and that is the only reason I go there....good rye bread. I am from the NY area so hard to convince me any deli is up to that standard. Used to be a place in North Jersey named Eppes Essen....THAT is my basis of comparison. That said, I find the Stateside Deli here, at least the one in Okemos, a pretty decent place to get a good sammich.

...and, to those who knock Jersey Giant...their #8 is the closest thing to the Eyetalian subs we used to get back in North Jersey.
