Pure Michigan: Ann Arbor (Zingerman's Deli)

  • Will Brasky said...

Is pickled Corned Beef really considered "processed" meat? I have a hard time wrapping my mind around that. You really think the foodie liberals who frequent the place would let white flour fly?

    Question #1: Yes it is.
Question #2: You'd be surprised how many people think white flour is good for you. lol

This is correct, which is why I have been careful to say that Zingerman's is very good. The prices don't bother me either, but thats a personal thing. I only want(ed) to point out two things: One, the majority of the clientele at Zingerman's is unbearable and two, Maize N Blue is a better deli.

Point two is subjective, but anecdotaly, most of the people I know who grew up in and around Ann Arbor (which is not coincidentally most of the people I know in Michigan) prefer Maize N Blue and they would also all tell you that Zingerman's is good. I think most of the people who prefer Zingerman's aren't from Ann Arbor, and have had it a few times when visiting and are caught up in the experience. They may have had Maize N Blue once or twice too. That isnt an experience, its just a great sandwich (and great pickles).

Point two is wrong. Opinions vary even if you are from Ann Arbor. I'd put the split more at 50/50 for MnB vs Z.

  • Deli Dave made better sammies at Sidestreet's.

    NigelUno

  • Good sammiches, but crazy expensive. Can't really call them overpriced though -- they get the traffic to warrant the prices.

  • Zingerman's is amazing. I live in NYC and still think it's the best Deli I have ever had by far. It's worth the $13...

  • A Reuben is $15.50?

That better be a good sandwich.

2nd Avenue Deli in NYC has a sandwich that is $28.00
    10. Royal 2nd Avenue, everything but the kitchen sink .............................................................27.95

Now that better be a god damn amazing sandwich.

  • In the Detroit area, Deli Unique, Stage Deli and Breadbasket are $10. All twice the meat and more flavorful than Zingerman's. No question.

2nd Ave, not 2nd Street. Side note this is one of the only real Jewish Delis left in NYC. It is really good too. I'd recommend the tongue sandwich, its phenomenal.

They have "a sandwich"? Is it a Reuben?

Are you really comparing prices in NYC to Ann Arbor?

You should do some research before posting. A corned beef on rye with cole slaw and russian dressing at the Stage on Orchard lake is $13.50. $10.00 at Deli Unique and $12.99 at Zingerman's. Don't even mention Bread Basket which is good but not great in the same class. They've screwed up my orders on a regular basis and the service is horrible. And Zingerman's give you plenty of meat.

Customer service is one reason why they were named the best small business in America. Great story, and I wonder who ended up with the gelato?

Speaking of the gelato, it is great. Very rich and flavorful. What flavors come with the gift basket?

    Vim,

I don't recall which specific flavors were included but I know they had a:

    Chocolate
    Vanilla
    Mackinaw island butter pecan flavor
    3 others

    They are each 12 ounces.

I found them online, not knowing about their reputation but was impressed with their customer service commitment. I am now my own reference for Zingerman's customer service.

Just saw this commercial on the Food Network. Is it just my hatred of UM shining through, or is that Deli highly overrated? Unless you like paying $13 for a club sandwich....

    Overrated? Yes
    Overpriced? Definitely
    Out-of-the way? Yep.

Zingerman's is really tasty and does a good job at selecting fresh, quality ingredients, but you could visit any of the following cities and find a hole in the way deli with comparable fare (quality):
    -LA
    -NYC
    -Chicago
    -Portland
    -DC
    -Philly

    I could go on

Breadbasket is not better than Zingerman's. Also, a big sandwich at Breadbasket is $13.

IMO, Star Deli in Southfield has the best corned beef in the state. I recently picked up a couple pounds of extra lean from there, and it was gone in a couple of days.

  • I had a Zingerman's today for dinner. Roast beef, hot mustard, raw onion, lettuce on farm bread grilled. As always it was a heck of a sandwich.

I've had a lot of great food in my life and Zingerman's Deli is, hands down, the best deli in the state. Hell, the Midwest, even. They really care about what goes into their menu, it's all natural, and fucking delicious. It's also an insanely cool place. Camp Bacon? Hell yes!

Overpriced ... maybe by about 15%. But I can live with that.

The Roadhouse is also good for dinner. They have some really solid chef talent go through there and the customer service is second to none. But I won't rave too much since there are other good dinner establishments in AA and the state.

I agree with what another poster said. If Zingermans was in EL it would be an institution. No one would speak ill of it for fear of losing their Spartan card.

  • Can someone please tell me the difference between Zingerman's $12.99 reuben and their $15.50 reuben? Is it an upgrade from 1/4# to 1/3# corned beef?

Sy Ginsberg corned beef is very good but not unique to Zingerman's. Many deli's use the same product but manage to deliver their sandwiches at a much better value.

Have you ever made a sandwich entirely from scratch? Have you ever baked the bread, smoked the meat, pickled the cucumbers, and prepared the dressing/sauces by hand? It's a lot of work, but that's exactly what Zingerman's Deli does. They do it because they're obsessed with providing their customers authentically great food.

A lot of NYC Deli's prepare their own corned beef. Does Zingerman's? Or do they just buy it from somebody else?

this thread has me seriously questioning whether I will ever eat at Zingerman's again..

Zingermans has good sandwiches, has a good bakery and a good specialty store. If you want to buy cheese made from the milk of LaLa the goat who lives in a small village outside of Lucerne, you can probably find it at Zingermans. If there is no line, I will order a sandwich. If there is a line, I'm more likely to hit Cosmo's for some Bibimbop or go somewhere else. Another decent option is Morgan and York on Packard(used to be the BigTen) for some specialty foods. While their selection is not nearly as large as Zingermans, and the sandwich selections are limited, parking is easier, they sell beer/wine/liquor and I'm good with their Jamon and butter premade sandwich. (no lines and quicker).

I consider paying $5 for a foot long sub at Subway to be a much worse value than getting a sandwich at Zingerman's.
