Pure Michigan ads making strong push in Ohio.

  • NigelUno said...

I couldn't get the pdf to come up.

I'm a little skeptical that a direct correlation could be drawn to that degree though, especially since a politician is pumping it.

They are great ads. I come to Michigan every summer. I see the ads. I would come without the ads. My guess is they would count me in their numbers.

Politicians touting the results of a study have nothing to do with the study's validity. Rick Snyder (a republican) and Jennifer Granholm (a democrat) have both touted the ad campaign, both pushed for continued funding, and both separately cited research figures that suggest it brings tens of millions in additional tax revenues to the state.

This isn't just some political agenda at work here, there are actual research numbers that suggest this campaign has been very successful.

You're certainly entitled to question the validity of the research, but I'll take the word of the experts on this subject. They asked some very specific questions about who was visiting, why, how much money they spent, and what kind of impact the ads have.

In an earlier post you said (not sure if you took that from the study)..."The state’s tourism office spent $14.2 million on summer out-of-state advertising last year, and the visitors it attracted paid $70 million in Michigan taxes. That means the state received $4.90 for each dollar it spent on the campaign. Pure Michigan’s cumulative return on investment since it started in 2006 is at $3.70, up from $3.29 Iast year."

I will say this without hesitation...this is just a guess. How much of an educated guess it is, is obviously open to interpretation.

I'm not making a Republican/Democratic issue out of it. The campaign is very well done, and obviously ANY politician will want to be associated with it...in part because a study suggests how effective it is. Do you not think that studies like these are pumped up a bit to show how effective the campaigns are? You're not that naive, are you?

Do you think they will release research that shows how effective the Ann Arbor campaign was? What do you think it will say?

  • I know someones parents who cancelled a Nashville vacation for a relaxed weekend in a Traverse City bed & breakfast by the beach... people forget there are awesome freshwater beaches here.

  • We get them here is St. Louis. The ads are very well done. I'll often stop and listen or watch. We're vacationing in Michigan this summer!

TC has gotten a lot of pub the past few years as a vacation destination. I imagine that along with cheap flights from most of the hubs on the east coast have boosted the tourism numbers.

I know they run them in the United States. I was referring to other parts of the world when I said all over the world.

The great lakes currently advertises as a region across the world and Michigan chips in for this.

Detroit is sexy? Germans think so. Michigan looks to lure international travelers

Michigan provides the true Americana experience that international tourists want, travel leaders say.

I don't think they run Pure Michigan TV (or radio) spots in Europe (or all over the world). I thought that's what we were talking about.

I say kill it. If I was wrong that it wasn't generating tax revenue then I'll apologize for it later. shrug

Yep. I think if they just focused on the calm dreamy Tim Allen one with water flowing and rotated it with a "HOLY SHIT WE HAVE MOTHERFUCKING BEACHES AND SHIT! FRESHWATER" one it would pay huge dividends.

The Pure MI tv ad is played frequently in Kansas. The most common question we get about MI is re Mackinac Island. TV ad always makes my family homesick. Miss the lakes big time!

I was just coming on to say that. I see them every so often out in the middle-of-nowhere Kansas. Makes me want to be back home every time I see one.

The Pure Michigan campaign was great but it has veered off course. First it was the Ann Arbor ad, which had no appeal to it at all, and was pretty much an ad for Ann Arbor.

Now I've just seen an ad that is a Pure Michigan ad for ... Michigan milk. I'm not making this up. Every state has its own dairy industry.

The whole point of the Pure Michigan campaign is to get people from other states to come up to Michigan from other states and spend some time in Michigan hotels, restaurants, and attractions. It is not to attract someone to spend a day in Ann Arbor - which I love to do, but that's not tourism - or to buy a gallon of Michigan milk.

The campaign is losing its focus.

I'm talking about stuff like this article that ran in Bon Appetit a couple of years ago. Mario Batali (celebrity chef) talks about his summer place near Traverse.

He makes the case that the market is great for people from NYC and the metropolis. The flights are cheap-ish, only 2.5 hours + a stopover The Leelanau peninsula has a pretty good reputation for wine and the value is much better than in the touristy parts of upstate NY.

  • Regarding international ads, I have seen the Jeff Daniels ads for Michigan (jobs and economic development focus) all over the world on CNN International for the past couple of years. I can't recall ever seeing a Pure Michigan ad in another country.

    Zapp Brannigan

  • I frequent Rivals message boards, and these ads have been mentioned favorably several times. Some people said that they learned something new about Michigan (aka, it's not just Detroit) and others have said they booked vacations because of it.

All in all, a good investment. Now we just need to cut off Detroit from out of district tax dollars, because it really couldn't get any worse. And if it did, no one would know the difference. Take those hundreds of millions, and we wouldn't need to advertise anything. If the Feds want to keep dumping money there, fine, but why should we?

    Rodeo Burger

  • What amazes me is how many other states are poorly imitating the Pure Michigan ads.

Sparty is our mascot, we are Spartans.

That's pretty funny. I posted that a few years ago. I did live in Cleveland for 4 years, so I got a kick out of those.
