Question for you Sparty fans

  • Honestly, your Offense will be really creative, I think we led the B10 in Offense a few years with JLS......but our Defense sucked monkey balls complete with a special position called 'Bandit' and armbands with the plays on them. The spread O left the D on the field for long periods of time and we had no depth and shitty D concepts. Always seemed promising after the first 4 weeks and a win against ND.lol

edit: we need the Bandit emoticon back

There was this really good game, in 2005, it was against Northwestern. We broke out to a 14-0 lead. I forget what happened after that.

He won't have the reins on offense or defense. He's simply here as a figurehead. Paul Petrino pretty much runs the same offense as his brother Bobby does. I'm not worried about on-field performance. I'm worried about off the field, on-camera asshatness.

You are right to be concerned. That said, John L. Smith was under a lot of stress here ( IMHO a lot of which was personal issues - his wife's illness [cancer]) and his worse on camera moments reflected that stress. John L. Smith is an emotional man and is not always in strict control of what he says and does.

I really thought a big aspect of the defense sucking was the depth, which really was Johnelle's fault. Bottom line, the guy couldn't recruit. He was beating out Toledo and Ball State for kids, and the only reason he beat them out is because we play in the B1G. Hell, when he was hired, I believe he said he had never been to the state of Michigan before that. He didn't know what schools had talent, what areas had talent, etc.

On top of that, he admittedly didn't want to be a coach year round. Instead of going to camps and coaching seminars, he was climbing mountains or skydiving. The end result was a huge talent disparity on the field. We essentially had some good players with MAC level talent surrounding them. There is a certain linebacker that I am thinking of that started for two years that probably wouldn't even play special teams on this years team.

  • The impression I got of John L, at least his time at MSU, was that he was a front runner. His teams reflected this as well. When things were rolling they went really well. For parts of games, or against lesser competition, we were unstoppable on Offense. Throw in a little adversity however and the wheels fall off. His meltdowns were symbolic of how his MSU teams responded.

Our current coach (and team) are almost the opposite. Not a lot of blowout victories, (ironically leading to some great John L like meltdowns here lol) but we have wins like Wisconsin & Georgia last year where the first 5 min had blowout loss written all over them.

On that receiver I couldn't remember: he was '03-04, Agim Shabaj. Damn I feel old haha. I remember on SportsCenter they always said "Sha-bye bye" whenever he would catch a long TD pass. Eight years ago, good lord.

You sure you aren't thinking of Devin Thomas? He only played 2 years, only caught 6 balls in year 1, but his 2nd year was a 79 catch, 1200+ yard, 8 TD season. He was drafted in the 2nd round of the 08 draft. Oh, JLS was his coach in year 1, Dantonio in year 2.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • You very well might get the best version of John L there is. He is taking over a good team with no pressure on him. He is a goofy cowboy. A real YEEEHAAA type of guy. That just didn't play well up here, and it didn't help him at all on the recruiting trail. He will throw the ball a ton, but sometimes he will throw the ball too much, like he did in 2006 when MSU had one if its all time melt down games against ND. He was able to come in his first year and take over a team that had a pitiful year the previous season. His first team went to a bowl game. Having a senior QB didn't hurt. He will throw a million bubble screens. At times his teams will struggle in the red zone.

John L never had good defenses here. His LBs were smallish and generally got bowled over by strong running teams. He will seem to run the score up against some teams which will really piss off opposing coaches. As others have said, he will beat a very good team one week, and then inexplicably lose to a bottom dweller the next.

As others have said, he is a nice guy. He'd be a great neighbor or a great guy to have a beer with. I think he genuinely cares about his players and he was generally good with the media. He is just as quirky as the day is long with his face slapping ways, always winking at you. Nice guy, but long term not a coach we would want back.

Good luck to you. He might just give you one very exciting season.

  • Whatever the most obvious strategy is at any point in any given game he will do the exact opposite and it will make you crazy.

    The moment is eternal

    Desert Green

  • The problem is he scores fast so the D is on the field a lot. When he gets up by 3 TDs he puts the offense that the other team could not stop into a lock box and starts to run the ball exclusively sending a signal to his team that he does not trust them to win the game.

The other team easily shuts down the conservative offense and the D that is gassed from playing most of the first half has to play even more in the second half.

The other team races past our tapped out D for the lead. John L will then try to jump start the Offense that he didn't trust to finish the game against a well-rested and motivated defense. The Offense is of course shell shocked because of so many 3 and outs and knows that the coaching staff does not trust them. The defibrillation doesn't work and the patient is pronounced dead.

Well we all know that John L Smith will coach the Razorbacks for this season only. He will get the full treatment as a head coach: he's getting his own weekly coach's show that will be broadcast all over the state of Arkansas headslap. I'm worried. Thank God it's just gonna be one season. It was actually a smart hire by our AD in an attempt to keep the current staff together and to keep the team on track towards our first SEC title (hopefully). Like I said earlier, I'm still worried. What should my fellow Hog fans and I expect? Will we (Hog fans) see a bunch of this...

You answer your own question in that last sentence. What you see is what you get. Sorry bud...

Your season will at the very least be entertaining.

This. For all of the things that JLS is, the one thing he is not is boring.

Sha Bye Bye's biggest problem was that once every blue moon he would pull a great escape out of his ass by stutter stepping, and cutting back across the field, literally looping backwards 10 yards and then would get out in the open for a 20 yard gain.

The problem was that he caught the ball more than once every blue moon, and he would try the same old trick far too often. My biggest sports meltdown EVER revolved around a first down that we absolutely needed to keep a drive alive and win a game. Sha Bye Bye made the catch a yard shor of the first down, and tried his escape plan AGAIN. If he would have just fell forward we get the first down, the drive is still alive, plenty of time on the clock. He tries the ol Escape plan, fails, we turn the damn ball over on downs, and lose. JUST EFFING TURN THE BALL UPFIELD AND GET THE GAWN DAMMED FIRST DOWN SON!!! IT'S AS SIMPLE AS THAT!!

DAMMIT, my day just went to shit.

    This is it exactly.

I have had beer with JLS, and he is a great guy to sit and chat with. He is humble, says a lot of the right things, he just says them in a WTF kind of way. He came here and straightened up a screwed up program. He will keep your ship on course so that the next coach has a great base to start from.

I wish him the best of luck. It would be awesome to see him knock off Saban. (and I like Nick, but that would be just plain awesome)

  • As most said JLS seemed like an awesoem guy, but he was just not ready for everything that is involved with running a B1G level program. He has a hard time accpeting all the responsibilities that goo with being a head coach. He is older now adn most likley learned from his mistakes so I think you should avoid any meltdown moments.

I would almost guarantee you that he will not call ANY play this season. Not a single one. I'm serious, too. That's not his job here with this "interim" title. He's simply here to keep everyone together as a team.

Only way this works is if you have extremely strong leadership from the players. If everything is going good, it is easy to keep people in line. If there is any adversity, and the players know the head coach isn't really in charge because he's gone at the end of the season, the wheels can come off real quick. You could have an inmates running the asylum situation, which ironically is a major reason why JLS was brought to MSU to clean up in the first place.

  • This could end up like a Bobby Bowden team from the late 80's , early 90's. A good old boy who lets his coordinators do all the work. He won't need to recruit or run camps (his biggest faults). He has a talented team this year.....or it could also exploded and everything crashes and burns. I'm betting on good things for Ark this year.
