RCMB women:Why do you care so much about fine china?

  • We are moving. We sold all the furniture, but still have about 2 cars worth of stuff. The wife insisted that we put this expensive Kate Spade china on the wedding registry years ago, and we literally have thousands of dollars of this shit. We looked into UPS, and it is $900 to ship and insure it. I refuse to pay that. I did a trial pack last night and literally both trunks are going to be full of this garbage. WTF!!! Why is it so important to have expensive formal china. People don't care about your plates and glasses when you have them over for dinner. I would have been just as happy with some generic pottery barn collection for half the price and less pieces. Motherfucker!!!

  • Women that are into fine china are usually trying to compensate for their husbands not being very well endowed.

  • I don't even know if we're going to register, but when buying a bridal shower (ugh) present last weekend the chick at Bed Bath and Beyond saw my engagement ring and thrust a 'registration guide' at me. I saw the fine china section and was like when would I use those? What's wrong with normal plates? confused

Exactly. I could see wanting a decent set that looks a little nicer, but do you really need $2-3K worth of this top of the line garbage. That's money that could go towards a downpayment for a house, retirement, 529.

Nakid Boibeys and I are both excellent cooks. People on this board have eaten my cooking and enjoyed every bite.

Yep, I'm probably getting some from my grandmother (she's moving soon) that was HER grandmother's china. I'll be the 5th generation to own the stuff. Don't know what I'll do with it, but it's still pretty cool.

My sister also was given some china and silverware from my grandmother. My grandmother sat my brother and I down, and explained that she wanted all the stuff to stay together, and she was worried that my brother and I would be pissed that we didn't get it. We assured her that she made the right choice, and that we wouldn't appreciate the china one bit. For that matter, I'm not sure my sister has ever used it either, but whatever.

China/silver seems like an old school waste of money. I can't remember ever noticing a plate (whether is was nice or not). And I'd hate to actually be upset if I broke a plate, or worse, if someone else broke MY expensive plate.

  • we passed on china during our wedding registry. Focused mostly on daily use stuff. Good thing too: we found a full set at a Goodwill in Davis, CA for $25. My wife loved it! ya, china is stupid

  • if it were up to me, i would use every last one of those plates for skeet shooting, rather than treking them across the country. what a fucking waste of money.

  • Okay, I'll take a stab at this.

I think it depends on where you were raised and what kind of circles you run in. Just be glad your wife wasn't born in the south where it is expected you have a sterling silver pattern chosen by the time you are three years old.

I grew up with a nice Sunday dinner pretty much every week and fancy holidays. I appreciated it then and I appreciate it now. I was taught to be comfortable with fine things and it is a skill that can come in handy. I didn't grow up in a wealthy family, but when I've been in situations with people of higher social rank, I wasn't intimidated by lots of silverware, etc. I've watched other people in similar situations being overwhelmed and uncomfortable because it was totally foreign to them.

Our society has changed and to many people it doesn't matter as much. But I still think raising your children to understand social graces can be a big benefit to them later in life, even if you don't currently run in those circles. You never know where their careers, friendships and hobbies might take them.

We got the silver too, it was missing a few pieces so the in-laws found the same stuff online and completed the set, which has never seen the light of day either, I think they spent like $500 on the missing pieces...crazy. I'm sure if you opened the case they will be all tarnished and will take a weekend to get them back to how they should look.

I feel the same way about breaking the china, and I'm the kind of bull in a china shop guy that would do that, it's really nice stuff but it's so thin you can almost see through it and my fred flintstone hands need no part in that....would be my luck the first time we use both that I would set down a silver fork on the china and it will shatter
