RIP Hershey's Steak and Seafood

  • At least one of the owners at Hershey's was a former Gilbert's employee. When they opened it was a smaller version of Gilbert's in Jackson. The food was alright but the location was always a tough one to figure. At one time I think they were hoping to be Knight's Cap East.

Over the last 5 years they have seen some competitors come in with better locations and updated menus. Hershey's was never a high end place but not priced to be a Logan's either.

I never ate there, but I remember their terrible commercials from back when I was in undergrad: "WHO IN THE WORLD WANTS A CHOCOLATE STEAK!?!? No, but seriously, we're Hershey's Steak & Seafood and...." As they pour a bunch of chocolate syrup on a cooked steak.

Never exactly piqued my interest, but then again, I don't care for chocolate.

I remember those ads well from when I was at MSU too. I always said I'd want to try a chocolate steak just so I could say I did on my birthday or something, and then have a cigar and cognac while getting a beejer afterwards. For the longest time, I thought they actually served chocolate steaks and I was getting ready to go there. Then people told me they didn't actually have chocolate steaks, so I saw no need to eat at the place. Damn their misleading advertisements! lol

  • Sad to hear. My wife and I had our wedding recital (is that the correct term? the dinner the night before the wedding?) there and a couple of Valentines Days. Food wasn't overwhelmingly great, but good enough.

It says "popular East Lansing Restaurant..." Too bad it was neither located in East Lansing nor popular.

I just looked on Google Maps. It was indeed in East Lansing. Here is the address:

    2682 East Grand River Avenue
    East Lansing, MI 48823

I don't know your definition of popular, but certainly on holidays and special occasions it was.

Fail, do you not know where the boundary of EL is? Here is a picture for you with the purple point being the now closed Meridian Township location of Hershey's. The Eastern edge of the city of East Lansing on Grand River avenue is near the Brookfield Shell, far west of the Hershey's:

  • Look, Pulling, the East Lansing Food Co-op is not technically in East Lansing. Coral Gables calls itself an East Lansing restaurant, even though it was built in the 40s just over the city limits because East Lansing was dry and MSU - oh, please correct me on MSU's name in the 40s - was in East Lansing, and EL was dry.

The headline calling Hershey's an East Lansing restaurant was descriptive of how people thought of the place.

??? I don't ever recall this commercial. When were you an undergrad?

They didn't really do chocolate steak did they?

I was in EL from fall 02 through Summer 07, but I feel like I didn't start seeing Hershey's commercials until my last couple years. Probably after they started having trouble getting enough people in the door.

No it wasn't.....I live in EL for 15 years and I never thought of Hershey's or any of the other places outside of East Lansing as in East Lansing. There is a city limit for a reason. I am pretty sure Coral Gables pays taxes to Meridian Charter Township and not the city of East Lansing. I guess since Coral Gables is only 1 block into Meridian Township they are "more" EL than Hershey's was? Nope.

    OK, Pulling, here goes.

When I came to MSU in 1974, they actually has dorms that were split as to which rooms belonged to East Lansing and Meridian. Every MSU student believed they lived in East Lansing even though some technically lived in Meridian Township.

When I rented a townhouse that technically was in Meridian, but had an East Lansing address, I told people I lived in East Lansing. I was called for jury duty but explained to the judge that I did not live in EL. People associate their homestead with where their mail is delivered.

When I bought a house in a place called Okemos, and lived there for 15 years, I told people I lived in Okemos. You might drive to Haslett or Okemos sometime. They have their own ideas of community names. But those towns do not exist.

When I nearly died in an auto accident at the corner of Hagadorn and Jolly, 911 asked me where I was. I told the operator where I was - an intersection for God's sake - and she asked where I was in the middle of the intersection. I literally stared at the phone. I guess I was either in East Lansing, or Meridian, or maybe Alaiedon Township. I thought I was in East Lansing. (All jurisdictions sent ambulances)

No one says "I live in Meridian Township." People say they live at their postal address. People consider their home town Okemos or Haslett.

So if the mailing address for Hershey's was East Lansing, that's their address. Coral Gables and Paul Revere's are East Lansing bars even if a mile or so outside city limits.

Same here. We had our wedding rehearsal dinner at Hearshey's and attempted to empty their bar of alcohol that night with my parents, had the wedding at the botanical gardens by the horticulture building, and the wedding reception at Kellog center.

When my wife and I went to MSU we would hit up Hearshey's a couple times a year for dating anniversary's, etc. Always went there a couple times a year when we visited MSU too. I thought they had great food, and everyone keeps teasin on the salad bar but it was simply the best salad bar there is.

If its not too late I think I will try to get over there one last time. Wifey will be very dissappointed. EDIT: looks like they closed last week

When you were in Meridian Township did you ever pay taxes to East Lansing? No. The fact is Hershey's was a business taxed and located in Meridian Township, simple as that. If Coral Gables was/is an EL bar then I guess they were selling booze illegally back in the day. They chose their location for a reason: to make more money by not being located in East Lansing.

Coral Gables is outside the city limits because it served alcohol when East Lansing was a dry city.

Hershey's is not in East Lansing. I understand that sometimes you describe where you live as a different area, just to make it easier for people to understand.... For example, when traveling outside of the U.S., if someone asks where you're from, "Detroit" is much more likely for them to know than "Lansing". And it gets the point across. It does not mean that I'm actually from Detroit.
