RIP ta da Derrick Nix speculation ... presser in progress

Jemele Hill ‏ @jemelehill Izzo is a fantastic coach and good person, but he loses me when he tells the media how we should do our jobs @joerexrode @samhoseyjr Retweeted by Joe Rexrode

Am I the only one who sees the hypocrisy here? The argument for dropping Nix came from the media. They were telling Izzo how to do his job. They were exercising judgment over the job performance of someone else.

Why does the prerogative to act like that run in only one direction?

In fairness to Rexrode because he is one of few sports journalists in the Michigan market who I actually think at least tries to do a good job, he probably faces many deadline challenges and pressures due to his employer's constant cutting of jobs and resources.

Again, I love Joe. But pressure and deadlines are just an excuse. It doesn't change the fact that he screwed up, here. Just like screwing up also doesn't change the fact that he is a good journalist. Next time, he might want to finish the job before speculating/implying Izzo could be running a dirty program.

  • Izzo says he wants the media to be held with the same scrutiny that players are. An hour later it is happening on twitter and the media is feeling the heat about the car reporting. Izzo sees the future. Awesome.

No. Sports journalists make their living telling coaches, players and administrators what to do. But when they screw up, they don't want to hear it.

  • Interesting exchange between some dude and Rexrode on twitter

    30TTM:
@joerexrode is real butt-hurt over Izzo
calling out his shoddy journalism. Next time finish the investigation before tweeting your story.

    Rexrode:
@30TTM Everyone who reported on the story cited the police report and driver registration, which said 2011. Not sure that rates as "shoddy."

Except, that is only half the job. He essentially used a massive database to find the initial information. Here, I have no problem. After that, he should have corroborated that information with the owner, Nix or MSU before proceeding with the story. Instead, he went ahead and published the owner's name without any other explanation, only increasing speculation. He half-assed it after the got the registration. The problem is that the registered owner's name is only half the story. When the rest of the story proved any speculation unsurprisingly off-base, he looked bad.

He is a journalist, not a talk radio host. His job is to report the whole story, not raise speculation.

I'm pretty sure you don't need to "confirm" information from a government database. It's not his fault the SOS effed it up.

Let it go people - it wasn't an issue and isn't an issue going forward.

The VIN revelation may have been recent. Either offered by MSU or looked up after it became known the registration used in the police report was not correct.

I'm sure he and many many other reporters put in calls for more info but no one would comment. Aside from water boarding sources, at the time that was the whole story.

  • I wonder who's "lobbing missiles" at us. It might backfire on them when Izzo shows how forcefully he backs up his players.

Not the problem, as the post indicates. The problem is that he didn't confirm anything beyond that, like who the owner was or what her relationship was to Nix. The story isn't just that he was driving someone else's car. The story is whose car was he driving. See the difference? One is half a story with endless implications; the other is the whole story with finality. When you write half a story that results in inane speculation, you look foolish when the rest of the story proves the implications completely wrong.

And if this situation has taught us anything, it is that you may want to corroborate government databases. Sure, it isn't his fault the government screwed up; however, it is his fault that he relied on their information as gospel.

Well if they didn't get the whole story, they should have held off until they got it. As others have noted, journalism is now a race without a real finish line.

Now, I don't care if talk radio, callers or posters want to speculate. That is their prerogative. But as a professional journalist, your job is to write the whole story. He didn't do that here, and it backfired.

Perhaps Rexrode can remind Simonson of his groundless speculation about the car since Izzo won't/can't because Simonson has his head waaaay up Pete Secchia's ass.

What I don't understand is why Secchia puts up with Simonson's crap at all. Just call your station managers and fire his ass.

journalists should never take police reports as the gospel...especially when information on it is easily verifiable.

Yep, people make mistakes. No problem as long as they learn from them and aren't assholes about admitting it when called out.

That's not how journalism ever worked. Ben Franklin didn't do that, neither did Woodward and Bernstein. That sought all the facts they could get, verified, reported, repeat.

MSU can either respond quicker or just deal with it. Either is fine, but usually you can't have your cake and eat it too. If you want to control the story you have to get out in front. Or just be quiet and let things play out without contributing to the situation.

Either way, it's not on the journalist to worry about what the haters will do with their reporting. That's an MSU PR problem.
