Recommend me a new Android phone

  • Apple guys, don't bother. I know what phone they have. This is to find out the best Android options to compare to the iPhone.

I have one of the earlier Android phones and it's time for an upgrade. This is what is most important to me:

Sprint - not changing carriers, largely due to a continued 25% discount off their already good prices, and I have few complaints about the service in my area. But most Sprint phones have comparable sister phones with other carriers, so I'll take opinions on whatever you have.

Speed - opening apps, using apps, etc. This is what drives me up the wall with my current phone. I see several Sprint phones with 1.2 GHz processors. Any realistic difference between snapdragon versus others CPUs of the same speed?

Recency - I'd like a newer release phone so that it will be supported for updates longer.

As far as current phones, I thought I've heard good things about the Galaxy S II? What about the Evo Design or Evo 3D? When did each of those come out?

    Couple of other questions:

When is the Sprint Galaxy Nexus coming out? Is it worth the wait for Android 4.0 to be native as opposed to getting 2.3 delivered and then upgrading? How long until WiMax 4G is phased out? With LTE only in a few areas for Sprint, is the Nexus essentially a 3G phone for most areas? Or will a WiMax phone become a 3G within a year?

    MiamiSpartan

  • galaxy nexus wont be out for who knows how long. Wimax is going to get phased out pretty quick, go with LTE or regular 3G if LTE isnt available in your area

  • Not familiar with Sprint's phone offering but I got the new Droid Razr about a month ago and it is working out well. Had the HTC Thunderbolt prior to this (lost it), which I liked and was planning on just getting another, but the salesman at Verizon talked me into the Razr for an extra $50 bucks. A year newer and its a bit quicker and the battery life is much better. Happy with the decision.

  • get the galaxy sII...its fast...nice screen...easy interface...super light...and you can get it pretty cheap.

If you are into specs though, it is not going to be the absolute cutting edge...but it is a very functional phone that has performed very well for the masses.

Isn't the galaxy nexus going to be sprints first LTE phone, or am I mistaken.

Compared to what is the galaxy S II short on specs? Looked to have the best specs of the current Sprint Android phones.

When did the S II come out, btw?

    MiamiSpartan

  • It ain't android, but the Nokia Lumia 900 will be the best hardware / software combo when it hits the shelves. It just won best cell phone of the show at CES this year. From a looks perspective, its like they copied the ipod mini and made a phone out of it.

  • Thought I would try to find an existing thread.

Is the Razr Maxx worth it, or wait for the next set of phones to come out? I got the X when it first came out, but now it is a battery killer and slow. Anyone know if anything is coming out soon that will beat the Razr Maxx? That battery life might be the deciding factor for me.

  • Galaxy S2 is awesome. Buy that and go online and buy a couple NFC tags to put around your house and you'll be in heaven

Although they are announcing the S3 sometime in May, so you may want to see when that is released

I was similarly puzzled. But being a bleeding edge wanna be geek, I googled. pretty interesting. this article gives some practical applications. I learn from tRCMB every day!

Weekend Project: Make Your Own NFC Tags

NFC, or near field communication, is an emerging technology that will power mobile payment systems and mobile wallet solutions, like those in development by Apple, Google, RIM, mobile operators, banks and others. But NFC itself is just a way to send data wirelessly between devices, meaning it can be used for far more than mobile payments alone. One way to take advantage of a phones how.

We're likely going to get a crippled, dual-core version over here. Stupid LTE is making the carriers force the manufacturers to use chipsets that support LTE, any it's getting annoying. My contract is up in November, and there'd better be a quad-core phone ready for me by then.

I'm not in a rush, worst case scenario, I will have to drown my phone and use the insurance. I just bought a new battery for it and I still need to have it hooked up continuously, at least now it is lasting a couple of hours before dying. I like the Maxx, I just feel that it might be better to wait to see what they come out with next since I'm pretty sure that battery may start getting used in quite a few phones.

Edit - I should mention that I'm looking to stay on Verizon.

FYI: I cracked the screen on my galaxy s2 - so the gorilla glass is not indestructible. I am shopping around for a repair place - gonna cost almost $100 from preliminary research. sux

Near Field Communication is an automatic identification method similar to a Mastercard Paypass or a Mobile Speedpass (both use RFID). Instead of having to open a barcode scanner app, you can just tap your phone over an NFC tag and whatever information is written to the tag will be activated on your phone. The info could launch an application, change phone settings, dial a number, load a prewritten text, tons of things that are fun to play around with

There are various free apps that allow you to do this (the tasker one posted in the other link costs a few bucks IIRC). I've got a tag next to my bed so when I plug my phone in and set it down at night (on the tag) my alarm app opens and I can set my alarm for the next day. The video posted in Red-Dog's post was good so I reposted it here,

I got some of my tags from Web Evolved

  • This is the phone you want. It will be absolutely bleeding edge with a 720p screen and is basically the HTC One X which has been pretty much universally fawned over in the press. Not sure when it will be released, but shouldn't be too long.

    HTC EVO 4G LTE specs

HTC EVO 4G LTE features a 4.7 inch 720p Super LCD 2 screen with a dual-core 1.5GHz krait processor under the hood. The latter is the same CPU that the AT. There will be a 2000 mAh non-removable battery powering the phone and 16GB of internal memory which can be bumped up using the microSD slot. An 8MP camera is on back with a 1.3MP front-facing shooter. Android 4.0 is installed out of the box along with Sense 4.0 and it is a Beats Audio device. See the page for all specs.

Galaxy Nexus just came out on Sprint. I would wait for the HTC EVO LTE. However, you may want to see if its worth forking over the dough for an LTE phone. You'll have to pay the 4G data fees even if you aren't in a 4G market. This website is pretty great for any Sprint LTE updates: http://s4gru.com/
