Recruiting Penn State

  • I was listening to the coach at Penn State on the radio this AM. He mentioned several coaches who contacted him about his players/recruits including Ferentz at Iowa. He did not mention MD and I am wondering if that was an omission. The inference was that there was disappointment regarding those coaches (Kiffen) who did not contact him prior to making recruiting pitches. Does not sound like the style of MD.

  • Aww, a Penn State coach is hurt because people aren't doing things the "right way" -- give me a break.

  • I hope there is already an NCAA compliance monitor on site at Penn State and I hope they are attending every 1 on 1 and team meeting that coaches have with players...any "we are brothers, we stick together" talk is a violation of the ncaa sanctions against PSU.

  • I don't know why any coaches would take any of their players. You're not going to get more than 1 or 2 anyway, why would you want to touch that radioactive situation for 1 or 2 players? I was really shocked by a clip I saw on ESPN featuring Saban, JabbaWeis and Spurrier all commenting on it and basically saying they would consider any players who were interested in their respective programs. Why would any of these guys want to touch this? I simply don't see more than 10-15 players leave the program, certainly going forward for the next 3-4 years I see a ton of kids that were PSU locks playing elsewhere, but I doubt that many leave now. I just don't understand why anyone would want anything to do with this situation overall.

Because Penn State has great players that can help a team win and maybe it would do them good to go to a university that actually has values.

I don't think the stink of the situation necessarily transfers to the players. If there were someone at a position of need (DT or TE for example at MSU) that could help your program, why not take him. To take a player just to fill a roster slot, I'd stick with what you got going into the season at this point.

Why not give a player an opportunity for a fresh start???

  • Illinois currently has six coaches on Penn State's campus actively recruiting players and they faxed Penn State's entire roster over to PSU.

  • "And finally, a school already facing scholarship limits because of NCAA infractions, such as Ohio State or USC, may add a Penn State player as long as it doesn't exceed the limits specified in its infractions ruling. So USC can add Penn State running back Silas Redd as long as it doesn't exceed its NCAA-mandated scholarship limit of 75.

So OSU may not be recruiting PSU players? Anyone know if OSU is full?

I heard the Rome show after Obrien was on. He made it clear that Kiffin had done what he was supposed to do with regards to recruiting PSU players (he even offered to talk to PSU about how USC created a plan to deal with a thin roster).

It seems to me that Obrien wants more than the list of potential recruits to be sent to him by various schools (which is what everyone is doing). He wants a coach to also pick up the phone, and say, "Hey, I'm going to talk to Silas Redd tomorrow, just a professional courtesy to you ole buddy...". And Obrien wants that, of course, so he can go talk to Silas Redd, and negative recruit against any coach who DID give him a heads up.

This. I'm not too surprised to learn that PSU coaches aren't happy right now.

It's basically open season on their players and they can't do a damn thing about it.

Fuck that. Send a list and that's acceptable. Camp is a week away. Coaches don't have time to sit and talk on the phone with O'Brien for a half hour about who's going to be recruited and who isn't.

O'Brien is a new coach at this level. Most coaches aren't going to call him up as a professional courtesy because in their minds he hasn't necessarily earned that courtesy. If he had been in the game for a while like Golden or Fedora, opposing coaches may consider a phone call to be appropriate. Coaches are hanging out in parking lots and outside dorm rooms. Most of them couldn't care less about acting cordial to O'Brien and staff right now. They're there to fill out depth charts and leave with the talent.

Is that right? Definitely not... but most coaches at this level don't really give a damn about what's right.
