Red Wings in new arena behind the Fox?

  • It's pretty common knowledge that Mr. Ilitch has been buying up properties around there for the past few years. IF (and it's a fairly large if at this point) it happens, that seems like a logical spot.

  • As soon as Ilitch can squeeze the city into building him an arena, then it will happen.

I hate that they use Ameican Airline Center as their "example..." of HKS's work.

They've done so many other...better...more known stadiums/arenas than that..

My favorites are Lucas Oil or Ballpark at Arlington.

They also did Cowboys Stadium, however of Illich did indeed contract HKS, look for something retro...yet large and cutting edge in the Lucas Oil mold.

  • id rather see it just north of 375 in the Masonic Temple district....area is hella blighted and abandoned, that would do a lot to revialize it (like CoPa and FF did to that side of woodward...)

  • Plenty of room there for an arena and some parking garages

Are you talking about near Cass Park and Cass Tech? If so, this location would be about 5 blocks from that.

.Olympia already runs Masonic Temple. The area that Illitch has been buying up is north of 75 on Woodward

Basically a block up Woodward from the Fox between Cass/Woodward and 75/Temple

Masonic would be on West Corner, Copa would be on East Corner.

I think they would have to build a nice landmark foot bridge or 2 over 75 which is very doable and the whole area would be linked.

Hockeytown Cafe would be between Fox and Arena.

I would love it if they did an arena that resembled old Olympia.

Thought the article said behind the fox. Although the place you suggest would be nice.

Thats one iof a few suspected spot (per article) but Illitch has been buying up the Cass/Woodward area for a long time...add to the fact that it would be nice for him to connect the his center to the Temple...then they can really put money into that landmark...

Gotcha. They use that area for parking during Tigers games, correct? That whole area across 75 is pretty shitty, although I'm sure they'd build it up.

Eh, Lucas Oil Stadium is fairly lifeless. I don't see that as a stadium to admire.

As far as large indoor arena/stadiums go, it's pretty unique.

Can you provide an example of something that high profile as better?

I find Cowboys Stadium more sterile.

look at the north end of that map. see the green stuff? thats vacant, and the spots just off woodward are tailgate lots. see the brown/grey stuff? thats blighted. 5 blocks or not, its a giant shit hole right next to one of the nicest parts in Detroit. its a giant gap between downtown and midtown, and it should either be razed and turned into an urban nature preserve, or something big should go there.

There is an area of newer row like homes on the other side of Woodward from where I think the arena will ultimately end up.

The parking lots correct? Definitely enough room if you can buyout whoever owns those lots.

  • I'd be willing to bet a decent chunk of change the location being looked at right now is indeed the spot just north of I-75 and west of Woodward. With Midtown and downtown coming along nice, there is a definite desire to link them.

Additionally, some other indicators make me think this. One is that Ilitch is an investor on M1 rail - you would have to think that he would want the rail stopping right at the front step of his investment. A late addition to the M1 proposal was a stop right on Woodward in front of those condos - a bizarre stop unless there is something in the works. With part of the architectural plans including a retail development (like Columbus), that makes much more sense right on Woodward rather than tucked behind the Fox.

Also there has been a mystery investor buying up lots of property in that neighborhood. Nobody can speak about it, but it's one entity/person purchasing property. That screams large development.

I also completely agree that covering Woodward for a few blocks east and west over I-75 would be wonderful. Put some retail on the street and perhaps some nice small parks behind the development.
