Regarding Andrew Maxwell and SCum fans

  • Most things I have heard or read from UMers are along the lines of "who is their qb next year?" Or "don't you have some freshman starting?"

They have no idea the weapon we have been grooming..

First to the posters that always comment about obsession with UM:

    BITE ME!

If you don't like posts about UM don't read them and STFU!

I don't know if that ESPN post was from a UM or an OSU fan. However, how are UM's losses "minimal"?

UM loses Hemingway, Koger, Martin, VanBergen, Molk, etc.... That sounds like major losses to me. They get Shoelace back but he is playing the wrong position.

I don't know about OSU but they are ALWAYS good.

Half of UM fans don't know who half of the people you just listed are.

You're being pretty generous at half. I would say about 80%.

  • who cares what the scum fans say. This is the fanbase who thought Tom Brady was a bad quarterback and then later thought Tater Tot would win a heisman and a NC.

  • Maxwell is unproven. Any new starting QB is. Amazing observations.

But which would you rather have? Unproven Maxwell or proven dreadful passer Robinson? I'll take Maxwell, thank you very much.

  • They don't understand. They are going to get beat.

WE all know the reasons why, but just to put it in simple terms. Last year, the guy they say we can't replace had a whopping 120 yards on 50% passing. The defense and run game (which was struggling up to that point) was what killed them. Again. Now, outside of one DT spot, every spot on the defense gets better/more talented. The entire OL gets better. The RB position gets better, although we lost a guy that loves to kill UM. The WR position gets more talent to replace the experience...BTW, how did that work for our defense last year?

The point of all this is, they assume (hope) that Todd Schultz/Damon Dowdell is going to be the starting QB and that is all that they need to end the streak. Meanwhile, every reason the game went the way it did is intact. If anything, it sways even more in MSU's favor. Denard got shut down by Greg Jones and Eric Gordon. Then, Denard got shut down by a bunch of sophomores and freshmen. Now, without his favorite WR/TE/C, he is supposed to have a good enough game to win?

stop listening to UM fans trying to critique MSU's roster and players. If you want a gauge of their knowledge of our team, ask them to name one guy on our defense from last season besides Jerel Worthy and Will Gholston. Most of them can't.

Listening to scUM fans is about as unspartanlike as reading the DetNews or Freep. Waste of time.

I like our chances with Maxwell. Three year apprentice. Cousins was very generous with teaching the lad, and one thing I noticed on the sidelines, Cousins often sought out Maxwell when the series was over and had words with him about whatever. What does that prove. Fricken nothing. However, I like our chances. We know he has the tools, we know he's smart, we know as a freshman he started on one of the best Class A programs in our state. Again, proves squat till he gets on the field, but for a "new" qb, we shouldn't be complaining.

Correct. We will be in good shape, but anyone who does not expect a drop off is dreaming. Even if the QB and receiver talent is somehow better, fifth year seniors in skill positions (Cousins, Cunningham & Linthicum) are like gold in college football.

All of the SCum fans you see talking football say that Maxwell is an unproven college quarterback, so they say he will struggle. Then, in the same breath, they say that Shane Morris is the greatest quarteback ever and he will start from day one. I know another obsession thread. Maxwell has studied under Cousins for 3 seasons and knows the offense. Maxwell> Drew Henson (ooops I mean Shane Morris). Rant over.

At one point this season and most likely next they will discuss benching Robinson for Gardiner. They have and will trumpet the virtues of starting Gardiner an how the offense has and will run better with him at the helm.

Andrew Maxwell has thrown more collegiac passes than Devin Gardiner.

I agree with nearly everything you say, and for sure the overall message, but do you think we get better at safety with Trenton Robinson graduating? I'm not saying that it's not possible, but I think he won't be easily replaced, similar to Worthy.

Sounds like a fanbase that has been saying for the last four years... "You just wait until next year!!!"

I look forward to hearing all of this in year 5, year 6, year 7...

This. In regards to Maxwell, I've read/heard the same comment no less than 20 times (must have gone out as an official MGoSuck communique).

"I don't even know who their QB will be next year" therefore he sucks.

Perfect M logic, I'm in actuality too stupid to know what I'm talking about, but in my head I'm an M fan and know everything therefore.....

Yep, but the hope/belief/assumption is that the OL will be there to give Maxwell that extra 'beat' that Cousins didn't get last year, and maybe even give Bell some holes so the first guy he bitchslaps like Silky Johnson will be 8 yards down the field and not at the LOS.

Fowler is good, just gotta get that foot healthy, Sims has some serious experience, I mean those are guys that were playing in big games 2 and 3 years ago... Certainly there are lots of questions at TE/WR, but there is tons of talent there and A. Sims, Fowler, Lippett, Mumphrey, D. Sims, Kerrick, other giant white TE will have a shot to impress in the spring along with Ceaser possibly and the frosh / transfers will get a look in the fall too.

WR is honestly the easiest position to replace in football.

  • I believe Georgia's Aaron Murray was a first year starter last year and he had his team within one half of winning the SEC.

Maxwell is going to need some time to get comfortable, but assuming the Oline can protect him, I think our passing game has the potential to surprise some teams next year.

The better comparison to me is Maxwell this year vs Gardner who'll be the likely starter next year. Most UofM fans feel we'll suffer this year with a new starting QB who was a good recruit and who's been in the system for 3 years. Yet at the same time they feel they'll be fine with Gardiner (big recruit, 3 years on campus also) once he takes over in 2013.

Supposedly, Jarius Jones had beaten Isaiah Lewis for a starting safety spot, then got hurt. Trenton Robinson was a fantastic S and a great leader. MSU is replacing him with a guy they felt good enough about to start last year. The great thing about that position in particular is the rest of the guys in the secondary. Adams will be a 5th year senior at one CB, Dennard is a 2nd year starter with 3 years playing experience as a JR, Lewis might be an AA candidate at the other S. This will be the best secondary in the B1G, and one of the best units in the country, and thats not taking into account their depth.

Easily replaced? No, but comfortably replaced might be a better description.

When all of the post-season rankings came out and we had Burbridge and Arnett were in as Spartans, the first comment by UofM fans was "they don't even know who is going to be throwing to them". I mean, I can understand that they typically aren't very knowledgable football fans, but you'd think that they might have heard of the kid that's been backing up Cousins for a couple years now. They probably thought our backup was Keith Nichol.

Exactly, I haven't heard a single criticism of Maxwell from a UM fan, they are too ignorant to have any idea who he is. I have a feeling I am going to have an excellent time watching Maxwell introduce himself to Michigan Stadium this Fall.

To quote this big balled guy I have a major crush on, "A lot of the things they do amuse me."

I have had UM fans close to me say 8-4 for MSU this year, citing the loss of our QB. These same people, when asked the question "what about when Denard graduates?" tell me how they aren't worried because they have Morris and Gardner and that "great" recruiting class.

    Dumb.

Maxwell has better physical tools than Cousins. Yes, the mental part of the game will slow him alittle bit. The offense is based around a solid running back and short passes. That is ideal for a young, inexperinced quarterback.

    SCum fans are morons.

This. MSU is going to have a nasty defense and a very nice power running game. Both of these things take a lot of pressure off of the QB.

    The_Dude

  • On Maxwell himself, one can usually expect a 4th year junior to come in and handle his business just fine.

The best part for him is that he will mostly be asked to not lose games, with the defense that returns, and running game that should be better next year with more experience up front.

Really, don't you have to go back to Enos replacing Bobby Mc to find a guy who stepped in with that kind of situation at MSU?

Also, an advantage Maxwell has over some others, is he's already faced the most frightening thing imaginable on the field, that being the '10 Bama D, rested, and smelling blood in the water when he stepped out there.

WR is honestly the easiest position to replace in football.

This is quite true, as long as you are replacing it with top shelf talent and we are. We're actually taking a big leap forward in talent at the skill positions on our team.

Again the Alabama comparisons, they replaced Julio Jones and a Heisman winning RB while starting a 1st year QB. How did they succeed? Well they had a great physical back returning (Richardson and Bell), a veteran O line, had a mess of talent coming in at WR, and a very talented 1st year starter at QB. Oh yeah and they returned a great great defense just as we do.

I'm not saying we're going to be Alabama, but there are comparisons and it's a proven formula for winning.
