On Maxwell himself, one can usually expect a 4th year junior to come in and handle his business just fine.
The best part for him is that he will mostly be asked to not lose games, with the defense that returns, and running game that should be better next year with more experience up front.
Really, don't you have to go back to Enos replacing Bobby Mc to find a guy who stepped in with that kind of situation at MSU?
Also, an advantage Maxwell has over some others, is he's already faced the most frightening thing imaginable on the field, that being the '10 Bama D, rested, and smelling blood in the water when he stepped out there.

I like our chances with Maxwell. Three year apprentice. Cousins was very generous with teaching the lad, and one thing I noticed on the sidelines, Cousins often sought out Maxwell when the series was over and had words with him about whatever. What does that prove. Fricken nothing. However, I like our chances. We know he has the tools, we know he's smart, we know as a freshman he started on one of the best Class A programs in our state. Again, proves squat till he gets on the field, but for a "new" qb, we shouldn't be complaining.

At one point this season and most likely next they will discuss benching Robinson for Gardiner. They have and will trumpet the virtues of starting Gardiner an how the offense has and will run better with him at the helm.
Andrew Maxwell has thrown more collegiac passes than Devin Gardiner.

He actually performed fairly well (considering) too.
BTW:
Maxwell's career numbers (2 years as active):
Games: 9
Attempts: 51
Completions: 29
Yards: 294
Long: 34
TD: 1
INT: 0
Rushing Attempts: 9 (Sacks count)
Rushing Yards: -3.9 (Sack yardages counts)
Rushing Long: 4
Rushing TD's: 0Devin Gardiner's career numbers (2 years as active):
Games: 10
Attempts: 33
Completions: 16
Yards: 261
Long: 32
TD: 2
INT: 1
Rushing Attempts: 32 (Sacks count)
Rushing Yards: 74 (Sack yardages counts)
Rushing Long: 15
Rushing TD's: 2Who is the more experienced "QB" ? (Take in consideration the fact that I asked "QB" and the fact that while both have been active college QB's for 2 years, Maxwell has an additional year in MSU systems as a red shirt.)
I showed this to a Michigan fan last month after the one point basketball loss....when he was mouthing off about how we should get used to losing to Michigan in Football too because now that we have to replace a QB (Cousin's beat Michigan his first year too...and he had less herald/experience than Maxwell coming in - but that doesn't count...Rich Rod)! He never answered.

The fans that believe you guys will falter because of Maxwell are delusional. MSU will have a solid OL coming back as well as a top flight RB. All Maxwell will have to is manage the game efficiently and not make huge mistakes. Your defense will keep you in every game as long as the offense doesn't turn the ball over too much. The Boise game will be a great challenge for Maxwell in his first game. He'll have CMU to help build his confidence that should get the ball rolling for MSU.
By the time he plays UM he will have played Boise, ND, OSU, and Iowa so he will be well prepared going into the game. The only problem may be that Maxwell will be starting in his first real hostile environment all year which can work into UM's favor if they can cause a couple early turnovers and force MSU to play catch up. Not likely to happen but could still be a factor for the first couple series of the game.
And for the fans that say Morris will start from day one are also delusional. It's clear the coaches have a ton of confidence in Gardner and I expect him to be the obvious No. 1. Morris may not even play until his 3rd year if Gardner gets the medical redshirt he applied for. Gardner was a 4/5* and is perfectly capable of running the west coast system Borges wants to run.

Good post, I agree with pretty much everything.
The only exception is that I think I think Maxwell playing in Ann Arbor is going to be a bigger factor. You just never know how a kid is going to react playing on the road and how he'll feel the pressure. My hope is that the defense comes out and gets a couple 3 and outs to start the game until Maxwell settles in.
A lot of people complained about playing the CMU game in Mt. Pleasant, but it could work out really well. It'll give Maxwell and the young receivers a road game in an environment that shouldn't be too hostile before they have to go to UM.

I forgot that they play at IU as well, that should help him.
I didn't count Iowa and Alabama because we were getting pounded when he came in and the crowd a factor. Plus when you come in as the backup the pressure just isn't the same as it is when you start the game and are THE guy.

Cousins had leadership and other intangibles on his side, but Maxwell will put up better numbers than Cousins. He is simply the better passer--better accuracy and he throws a "more catchable ball."
Now...better numbers don't always mean more wins. Cousins ability to perform well under pressure was a powerful intangible in his favor. But I've heard more than one MSU player echo these same sentiments (about Maxwell).

I do too...if you think about the B1G next year a lot of teams should drop off in their passing game. Iowa loses McNutt, Wisconsin loses Wilson, and Northwestern loses Persa.
I think MInnesota should improve with their QB. He looked like he was getting better as the year went along. OSU should improve as well with their QB who looked rough and inexperienced last year.
UM and NEB return QBs with a lot of starting experience. Still not sold on Dennards arm for obvious reasons. Plus he loses Hemmingway and there will be no Stonum.
PSU - their O seemed anemic at times last year.
One thing I like about our O next year is Bell should be a beast and big weapon for us. As long as Bell can put up big yards and Maxwell can manage the drives without making mistakes I like our chances. Looking up and down the B1G I see no reason why Maxwell shouldn't be a top 5 to top 4 QB in the B1G.
