Remember when MSU was considered a party school?

  • We were a national top 10 school. Now we're not even in the top 5 in our own conference! What's wrong with today's utes?!?!

  • They are too smart and pussified.

The real problem is w/ the MSU admin and EL government for turning EL into a police state and horrible place to live for anyone----basically of all ages.

Yep. When we were at State, it took a lot to get in trouble. Feel bad for the younger Spartans who have to deal with all that crap from E.L.

  • Partying seems pretty weak around EL. Was a surprise to me given its reputation. Pretty calm compared to the other schools I'm familiar with. A good thing for the academic house, but certainly less fun.

I'm a senior and it's not even close to a police state. If you do dumb stuff you will probably get in trouble. Novel concept. Some people may disagree but I've had zero bad experiences. Hell, ELPD basically saved my friend's life.

When you're playing beer pong in the basement w/o music, have to wisper, and get questioned a dozen of times by the 15 or so people, then yes, you live in a police state.

  • I was there during the transition 99-03. Seemed like every other house party was broken up by the cops. I blame tom izzo and the elpd/city of east lansing for the change. The elpd/city because they are a bunch douche bags who don't know what they want. I blame tom Izzo because he created a monster and one of the most elite basketball programs in the country. more applications leads to choosier admissions policies leads to more nerds.

    You're so full of shit.

I've been at MSU for going on four years now. I've been drinking at MSU for about six. Not once have I had a single problem with ELPD. I've seen them screw some other people over, but they were being over the top stupid. I'm sure it's not quite like what it used to be, but I've had a lot of fun in EL in my day.

Edit: How do they put this list together, by the way? I was in Iowa City for the game last season. The nightlife was dead.

I was there somewhat before you (97-00), but I think the real transition started before either of us were on campus. At least when I was there, everyone seemed to think that it was the administration ending the week-long welcome week back in the early/mid 90s that started changing the climate of the school. The riots in 99 and beyond were the nail in the coffin and really gave the police a "reasonable" excuse to crack down ("if we don't nip these parties in the bud, they'll turn into full-scale riots) and give the administration the desire to reign in the partying (whether the riots really gave the school a black eye or not, the admin certainly perceived that this was the case).

  • We're still #1 in "riots" or the ELPD's definition.

    Exactly....

I know I've mentioned this before but one such example was my husband getting an open intox for carrying a cup of water. It really was water, and we were not obnoxious or drunk at all. Just water. Cop said you're either going to jail or getting a ticket. Thing is, I had one too, but the cop ignored me and told me to go and sit down. I would have gone to jail if it was me and probably would have lost my temper too.

  • Remember when you could start a tailgate any time you wanted in the morning?
Remember when you could have couches on Munn?
Remember when you could have kegs on any campus field?
Remember when you could actually drink alcohol for tailgates?
Remember when you could carry your beverages to a friends house?
Remember when you could blow a .10?
Remember when everybodies ID was fakeable?
Remember before an open-intox became a misdemeanor?
Remember when getting caught urinating on a tree in the 3am dark didn't risk you being a sex-offender?
Remember before they made a third of the ideal off-campus student house neighborhoods "historic areas"?
Remember when there had to be a legitimate complaint for a noise violation to hold up in court?
Remember before they invented EL code enforcement departments with 24/7 employees?
Remember when there wasn't cameras mounted recording every single intersection on big game nights?
Remember when security didn't check your bags, ankles and waistline?
Remember when cops didn't wear combat boots and carry tasers?
Remember when such a thing as mandatory minimum sentences was thought ridiculous?
Remember before tuition & cost of living saw a 1000% increase and you had money to spend?
Remember when EL didn't have a DA with absolutely no sense of "young people make mistakes"?
Remember before East Lansing forgot that East Lansing doesn't exist without Spartan 18-22 year olds?

Now remember all that next time one of you "adults" goes to remind a 20-something how hard you partied. Remember that when you're reminded how ideal you had it as college kids and how when you got older and gained all that political influence, you just decided to stand idly by while your own children got arrested, debt-laden & buried for doing the very things you love to tell us you did "back in the day."

I hope the students rise up and do some ethnic cleansing against your kind. No offense.

  • UW is always high in the rankings for those types of things, but they're so incredibly subjective and flawed. It's an email survey that goes out to the students of that university. Dumb. The foolishness is further flawed by the fact that "DePauw" is in there.

How about using some factual measures of some kind? # of bars on/near campus, booze sales at sporting events, alcohol availability at unions, # of liquor stores, etc.

But instead it's probably - how often do you drink? type of shit.

  • I would say it's the elpd cracking down. Had the cops show up at our apartment 5-6 times. Broke up one of our parties at midnight. Yes we were being loud/obnoxious/stupid, but thought thats what partying was all about. Im the only one of my roommates without an mip. Only one out of those three actually "deserved" one. Anyways weredoing our doing part. I have fun. Don't really know what it was like back then but im sure it was pretty awesome

Do you like to party?: Does the pope shit in the woods?
How many drinks do you have on a given weekend?: All of them.
How many nights per week do you drink? 8 or 9

I imagine some of those surveys look something like that.

  • Dude, this was like back in 2006ish--so you would have been there.

Look, the simple concept of an apartment party w/ 50 to 200+ peeps is dead. To much fear of blind pigs, Noise violations, MIPs, and Distribution. Hell, I remember the cops showed up at my apt one weekday night to tell my roomate he's playing video games too loudily while I slept in my room. Pathetic.

Put it this way, if you were underage today, would you be afraid to stand on your front lawn w/ a beer? If the answer is yes, then times have changed.

I dunno blanch, I was there from 2006-2010. Being underage freshmen and sophomore year, I knew I could stand on anyone's lawn with an open beer cause they can't just bust onto someone's personal property without a warrant. This is obviously not true but it didn't scare me to have cops around while i was drinking.

and my best friend lives on the bottom porch of river rd and water's edge. I can tell you we threw parties on that porch there at the most accessible place on campus in the middle of cedar village on a weekly basis with regularly 50-100 people coming and going.

  • first off, sorry for all you young people who have to deal with "law and order" these days. it's out of hand.

i was at msu in the early 80's. it was the last gasp for permissive policies towards students. the turn to the right this country took in 1980 changed everything.

young folks answer is rebellion. tailgating in 1980 was nothing like today. it wasn't a competitive sport back then. we used to tailgate at munn field, but bailed a couple years before the alcohol ban because the students were getting out of hand and destroying people's property. that must have been around 1996?

E.L. is not a College Town!!!!!!!! and people like you caused it! Its a f'ing strip mall on the border of a university.

There is nothing in E.L. that is a requirement of a college town. No music scene(gone with the 90's), no art, no welcoming arms to people who are different, no free thinking, no protests, and NO PARTIES.

and people like you and the ELPD are the reason
