Remember when Saban left?

  • D.Wags said...

Lot of anger here. All I'm saying is we have a chance to show the college football world we're ready to do this. Sorry I touched your Saban. It's obvious that scar is deep. I think you agree that our university needs to do this. All I said is that it was asked for once before and denied.

I like your stance to take our athletics to the next level, but i think your love for saban deturs from your arguments. People have selective memories of the man , he had more than his share of flaws when here and should not be used as a measuring stick for our current situation

  • I'm not going to wade into the Saban debate here, rather there is an important additional point to be made. MSU has made a huge commitment to facilities. The stadium expansion, DD building, the scoreboard, and other things. Millions of dollars have been spent or pledged for football. Facilities are huge, but you gotta have staff. I hope the U is wise enough to realize that we are only half way there. What good is it if we have great facilities but average staff? We have great head coaches, but I agree--pay the assistants market rates. Otherwise, as they say in the UP, it looks like a half-wiped ass.

    Its five o'clock somewhere.

He wanted MSU to pay their assistants big time money. Many on this board still put $$$ signs up for his name. 12 years ago he knew what it would take for a solid program. Facilities and salary for coaches. MSU refused to join the arms race.

It was many peoples belief on this board that it was very possible to coexist then with "guns and butter" for our Alma matter. In other words you have a great football program donations go up as well as student applications thus bringing up g.p.a.'s etc.

I personally thought we blew it then and sent a big message to all college coaches: MSU loves football but we do it on the cheap. This year we're 15th in the nation in profit for football. We still give all parking and concessions back to general fund. It's time to step up

We have a basketball coach, one of the best in the nation, who does not have an ego. We are so blessed to be in that situation. It's time to make it right. It's time to just fucking crush all big ten foes in football and basketball. There is a very small opportunity to make our athletic program the best in the Midwest even the nation. Open the books pay the people use parking and concession money. Get it done

I believe that President McPherson(?) was the MSU President when Saban was Coach. McPherson did not hit it off with Saban and declined to increase his pay. Saban left for LSU and won a NC. A few years later, I met McPherson at a function in Washington DC; he was full of himself; rude; and totally unimpressive. I was ashamed that he had been our President.

Yes, I knew Saban would be a hot button but I only reflected on him because in my opinion, that was the last time we were at a cross road like this. The last time the admin gave a resounding eff you and many obviously agreed. I didn't. I hope we see that a great program is a great ad for our school. My wife and I donate to our school and Ralph Young. That won't change either way and I wouldn't be ignorant enough to call anyone and say I'm not donating if we don't pay an assistant coach. All I hope for is we show the college football world we're ready.

  • The improvements were also coming, and have come, with more on the way.

Nick was a whiny little bitch who no one liked playing for.

Every year he was at State, he held MSU hostage with NFL coaching talk. Never would deny he was a front runner. For all his open crying about how hard it was to recruit against um, nd & osu, his own crap was the thing most used against MSU on the rectruiting trail- "ehy play for a guy on the way out, he's not committed to MSU, and you shouldn't be either."

He admits he instantly regretted the decision on the plane, and still does, as MSU was the place to build something real.

His love for his assistants was so great, not one joined him at LSU.

The scar isn't letting a carpetbagging whore doing what a carpetbagging whore does. The scar is putting a clueless running backs coach in the big seat. The whole point is the shitty prologue is the past to the Dantonio era. Who got poached from Saban's 6-6 staff the year before he bolted? We're only in this situation because Dantonio's won 11 games for the ONLY 2 FUCKING times in MSU history.

  • Saban just stole a 5 star from Louisiana. LSU fans in a meltdown.

    http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Landon-Collins-102551

3 of the top recruits from LA are going to other schools. One RB recruit said LSU is so loaded with RB's that he had to find another school. It must be nice to be stockpiled with 4 and 5 stars in every position.

You don't have to like Saban. Hell I worked 4 years for him at camps and he maybe said one sentence to me. You do need to know he had a vision for MSU that he believed the admin didn't share. I'm not here sayin he would have stayed ten years he always has another dragon to sley but he knew what the next decade was bringing to college football and tried to get MSU out in front. He's a prick but he has hardware.

Btw he loves money too and has ego but that doesn't mean he wasn't right in 98

Yeah, Nick had a vision......win the B1G in the 1st 2 years and leave.

That was the word on campus from day 1, never changed. His aim was to build a team, not a program. It just took him 5 years to have a good one.

  • Excellent post Dwags. We need to keep Narduzzi here. The facilities we have are very good as is, but could still be better as well, but the main thing we need to do is up the assistant coaches salaries, they have done an amazing job.

Dropped by a dime, did you really hate your teachers that much?

Rittenberg says we gotta keep Nardog for recruiting since we lost Enos.

  • If $aban said it was about assistant pay, why was he alone on the tarmac at Capital City Airport when the private plane showed up? Watts and the other assistants, and their families, got together and said "Naw". This was gonna be a package deal.

  • Saban has the top recruiting class right now with 3 five stars. Dood can bring home the bacon.

Yeah look I know many of those coaches didn't like him. Agree completely. Not to offend dropped but the next summer at all the coaching parties at night they all would say this exact sentence if you asked any of them about it: "I'm a Midwest guy I wanted to stay in the Midwest". After a day or so the all would kind of laugh about it as they were saying it. I get that completely.

Now if you can be rational and I believe you can just follow my point here for a moment. That plane that sat on the Tarmac was a private plane with shrimp with beer with a ton of shut on it. It was sent by the LSU football office Sent by one phone call. Do you get that? We were all flying coach to recruit and some sec schools have private planes. We don't need that and Dantonio has something he can offer kids that other colleges can't: character. However pay for assistants recruiting budgets etc help. That was my point at the beginning. That's all I wanted to point out. Let's do this

  • We need to invest in the football program. UM and tOSU are both smart enough to invest in its football facilities and coaches.

MSU still doest get it as a university. Having a good football program benefits everyone and the entire University as a whole. That is why it's not an expense it is an investment.

Coach D is not getting paid what he should be and neither are his assistants. Coach Ds recent "raise" was so embarrassingly small i almost thought it would have been better not to Make it public.

They did pay Izzo more which is already paying off. MSU basketball is ranked in the top 10 and it's recruiting class next year is top 5 in the country.
