Rent Dispute

  • I have been living with my cousin for about a year. At that point rent was $300 each(not including utilities).

His girlfriend moves in two months ago, and this genius tells me that because they "split a room" that they only pay $150 each, leaving me still at $300. Is this right? Shouldn't rent be split evenly three ways?

You also share common spaces, so their part combined should be more than your part.

  • I'd say that because they're splitting a room they should be able to split the cost of the room. However, utilities should be split 3 ways.

No way. Bitch also takes up living room space, fridge space, cabinet space, etc.

I wouldn't say rent should be split 3 ways (utilities should, however), but their part should be larger than the OP's.

It never ceases to amaze me that some people do not agree with this.

I would go with this. Because not only that, you are going to have to listen to their arguments, maybe them getting it on, her taking up the bathroom etc..

    Maybe just move out.

  • They use three times more water atleast. They each do 900 loads of laundry. I do two every two weeks. How is that fair to split that evenly?

I'm moving out in August, just curious what people thought.

You should beat both of their asses with a crowbar. You should be paying $250/month at most, but an even 3 way split seems most fair. If you're sharing the space with one more person, there is absolutely no reason that you should be paying the same amount of rent. I have no experience with such disputes, but it seems to me that growing a pair and confronting this jabroni is the way to go.

This is a little crazy and involved, but how about doing it by square footage? Split the square footage of all the common areas by 3. Split their room by 2. Your room is obviously all you. Then each person pays according to their percentage of square footage.

It just doesn't seem fair that you went into it thinking you'd share the space with 1 person, and now you're expected to share everything with 1 more person but still pay the same.

I'm sure your leasing company (or even your lease itself) has the square footage on their website.

Exactly. I move out in August. Not my problem in a few months.

Move out...tell them to pay the full share themselves. Find another place to live.

You sound like a purse when it comes to splitting the tab. Grow a pair already.

  • You're not wrong but it just depends on how big a dick you want to be about it.

If your roommate let the bitch move in without asking first, I'd be a dick about it. That's a pretty shitty move to pull on someone.

If you weren't moving out, I'd demand an amended lease with all three of you on it. With things like security deposits etc, I'd want all my bases covered in writing. For example, I've had a roommate sublease to one of his friends before, but the subleaser was a deadbeat and never paid rent. But he was also never officially on the lease. So I got threatened by DTN for a few months wanting me to pay his delinquent share. Ended up settling it for a small amount, but in hindsight I should have had everything drawn up in writing.

But since you're leaving in three months it's probably all more trouble than its worth.

It's the principle of it. His roommate is the one being a dbag.

The OP agreed to live with the dbag roommate thinking he'd just share the place with 1 person. The dbag roommate is now imposing his will over the OP by adding one person without asking the OP and not lowering the amount the OP has to pay.

The only ones without a pair (nor spine) are the ones who would let someone walk all over them like that.

  • Is there any chance you could get him to pay $312?

    Gomer

  • If you get to keep your own fridge/pantry space, just split rent by the bedroom and utilities evenly. Not worth the stupid bullshit that will undoubtedly befall your life if you want to take any alternative approach.

I see what you did there.

    TheChosenOne30

  • If the apartment is 700 sq ft and each bedroom is 120 sq ft that means that the remaining 460 sq ft should be split 3 ways.
Rent is currently $.86 per sq ft.

Cost for Roomate's bedroom $103.20 (or $51.60 each)
    Your bedroom $103.20
Common spaces $395.60 (or $131.87 each)

    Your monthly total $234
Roommate total $366, or $183 each for him and his GF.
    Utilities split 3 ways.

  • If you are moving out in August, stick it to them and just don't pay July rent.
