Resigning from a job - gracefully or blaze of glory?

  • Giving my notice on Monday, got a new gig lined up to start on August 1st. This place has repeatedly dicked me over, along with a number of really good people.

I'm not going to go back for a reference nor do I need them for anything moving forward. What sayeth you, sages of tRCMB? Walk away saying all the right things, or let 'em have it?

  • Ehhh..... I am of the belief that you never burn bridges. They will still function and move forward as a company, so there is no reason to 'blaze of glory' it because you are the only one who could be harmed.

Unless you're working at Hot'N'Now or somesuch place, you will probably need a reference someday. It's part of your employment history.

Otherwise, if you really want to throw caution to the wind... An upperdecker is in order. Take the magenta ink cartridge with ya on the way out too!

  • Be the bigger person. Give notice and don't burn bridges. You never know who you'll cross paths with in the future.

An upperdecker is always in order. It's not like they will know is you and I highly doubt they will notify your future, or any future, employer that you took a dump in the water bin of a toilet.

    This.

Suck it up, say the right things and be cool about it. Be the bigger man here.

The world of business is remarkably slow. I can't tell you how many times I have crossed paths with people I thought were far in the rearview mirror. Ultimately, I had one person write me a glowing review and recommend me for a new position some time after we both left the company we worked for - where we were frequently at odds. You just never really know.

the last thing you want is a "black hole" in the middle of your resume. You may never have a prospective employer contact them, but showing a consistent work history, without a year or two gap, can often be a key in landing a job. If I am looking at a prospective employee, have a big gap in employment history is a big red flag. Guaranteed I'll ask about it.

Agreed. I recently switched jobs and my former employer was just like the OP described his. I still gave my two weeks and left on good terms. Even if I did decide to burn the bridge and pull some stunt, these people were so terrible that I would not have been satisfied with any light prank, and I am not going to get arrested just to make an FU statement.

  • Being the bigger person would probably be the best thing for you to do professionally. But it would be far more entertaining if you go out with a blaze of glory. Here’s a good example.

girl quits job on dry erase board exposes farmville boss called her hopa : theCHIVE

We received the following photos last night from a person who works with this girl. Her name is Jenny (not confirmed) - we're working our contact for Jenny's last name. Yesterday morning, Jenny quit her job with a (flash)bang by emailing these photos to the entire office, about 20 employees we're told. Awesome doesn't begin to describe this office heroine. Check back as we will be updating if we get more details. UPDATE: Jenny's identity revealed! CLICK HERE.

  • taking the High Road initially sucks, but you do it clever and right, and those people will never, ever have ANYTHING on you, and you can look down on them with an arrogant smirk for the rest of your life.

    This.

You got what you wanted/needed and have a new job. Its nice you have empathy for other employees you think were jerked around like yourself and you leaving is a pretty big statement in itself.

If you do have an exit interview you can talk about the opportunity for advancement is better at the new place, better pay, maybe better benefits and for the sake of your family and or your career you couldn't turn down the position the new company offered.

If they are indifferent or say something disparaging about your decision let it go because you already knew they were jerks which is why you are leaving.

By letting sleeping dogs lie you leave without fanfare and give them no real ammunition for background checks if the new job isn't what it seemed and you are looking again in 24 months.

  • I agree with most other posters. I just finished working in college athletics, and now have a government job. Best not to burn bridges. Like other posters said, you never know who your supervisor or coworkers might know that could benefit you.

I have always dreamed of the opportunity to go out like Michael in Office Space...with the fish and all.

my wife could not have hated her old employer any more then she did. The CEO used to come in late afternoon on Fridays in the summer to make sure nobody left early and the guy was a real dick to her and even gave her the silent treatment once she announced she was leaving.. She was so close to hiding cat crap from the litter box in the CEO's office on her last day but decided to take the high road. She kind of regrets it thought but it was the adult thing to do. You never know when you A) might need that person again or B) might need someone connected to that person.

Agree 100%. Be more like you and less like them. Unless you are going to do something close to illegal, the company will survive. I am sure many others think the company sucks - but don't reveal to them that you suck, too.

  • Walk out knowing you were right. Don't burn the place down, but in the exit interview, I would let them know where they let you down. Be professional about it. Take a trophy, like the red stapler, motherboard, or fuck up something that they can't trace to you. Magnets on the hard drive is a good one on the last day.
