Why leave now? Why not play out the season and then start fresh somewhere else next season? What is he gaining by leaving the team and not playing any ball the rest of the season?

If he waits until the end of the season, he would have to sit out ALL of next season wherever he is.
If he is at his new place for second semester, then he can play at his new school second semester next season.
If he is not happy here, then he is waisting a semester staying.

realistically, if you are a euro-level dude or even just un-polished, you are better off getting a lot of minutes at a mid-level program than sitting on the bench at a high-level program
