Rest In Peace, Levon Helm

  • Honestly, I teared up a bit at work listening to that song.

Life's too short. It seems like just yesterday that he was playing 3+ hour shows.

Interestingly enough, Robbie Robertson visited him in the hospital yesterday.

  • I will be honest- I've never checked out Levon's solo work or The Band in much depth, but among people I count as musical heroes, Levon was loved by many and universally respected.

  • Terrible news. I knew it was coming, but I still wasn't prepared.

I watched The Last Waltz the other night. And even though Levon hated that concert - and the film even more - it was a sublime event, and Scorsese captured it beautifully.

On another note, I'm glad Robertson visited Levon before he passed. They both needed closure with regards to their rift. Now may Levon RIP!

Any explanation for their rift? Besides Robbie being a notorious egomaniac.

    Great post.

I can't stop listening to "When I Go Away"

I will have to throw on The Last Waltz later tonight.

OK. I'm NOT trying to be negative or piss on the grave of a truly great artist before he's even in the ground.

Levon was consumed with hatred and jealousy for the rest of his life because Robertson essentially wrote all their music. Levon claimed, but never proved, that Robertson took a lot of credit that he didn't deserve, which was bullshit. Robertson has proven time and again in the years since that everything he was solely credited for writing, he did in fact write himself. And he explained and demonstrated as much for countless musicians. This has been documented numerous times in print.

I'm sorry I even mentioned the rift. The important thing is that it appears that they forgave each other, and that levon finally attained some closure before his passing. May Levon rest in peace!

In 1976, at Robertson's urging, the Band broke up after its farewell concert, known as "The Last Waltz." In meetings before the concert and as recounted in This Wheel's on Fire, Helm was adamantly opposed to the group disbanding. "I didn't want any part of it," he wrote. "I didn't want to break up the band." He begrudgingly went along, but his relationship with Robertson was never the same.

When the Band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, Helm didn't attend, revealing that his feud with Robertson was still on. "I thought Levon was going to show," Robertson told Rolling Stone a few years later. "Then that evening they said he changed his mind and wasn't going to come. And I thought, 'Oh, God, it would have been better if he was here.'"

I was bummed when I learned that Levon hated the film. I'm with you, it is an excellent piece.

I think you've covered things well and very tactfully in this and your other posts.

Amen. This is the most important point. And I bet Robertson is mourning harder than any of us could possibly understand (not to mention Garth). A tremendous loss.

"Last week I was shocked and so saddened to hear that my old band mate, Levon, was in the final stages of his battle with cancer. It hit me really hard because I thought he had beaten throat cancer and had no idea that he was this ill. I spoke with his family and made arrangements to go and see him.

On Sunday I went to New York and visited him in the hospital. I sat with Levon for a good while, and thought of the incredible and beautiful times we had together. It was heartwarming to be greeted by his lovely daughter Amy, whom I have known since she was born. Amy’s mother, Libby Titus, and her husband, Donald Fagen, were so kind to help walk me through this terrible time of sadness. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife Sandy.

Levon is one of the most extraordinary talented people I’ve ever known and very much like an older brother to me. I am so grateful I got to see him one last time and will miss him and love him forever.

Thanks Dixon. Very poignant, I agree. Maybe you're not so bad after all. ;)

  • I know Levon always said that drumming and singing was easier than what people thought but that is complete bullshit. Especially with his skill and passion. He was being humble. Some people can drum. Some people can sing. No one can Levon Helm.

The Band: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

Levon - When I Go Away (posted above)

I have watched that video three or four times and teared up a couple times. What a powerful song and performance.

His life was incredible. Cancer initially robbed him of his ability to make music. I can't even begin to imagine how hard that was for him and his loved ones. I'm sure there were moments where he thought about riding it out and living an ordinary life of a cancer patient. But no. The guy worked his ass off, and by some miracle, regained his ability to sing. Then he made two stellar albums with all of the soulful qualities he displayed in his prime. I can't think of many people who were more respected in the music community. The Rambles are incredible if you read about them. I was really hoping I might be able to see him in concert one day. He still had the ability to get the entire music community buzzing with 3 + hour concerts. In his 70's. Amazing.

I think that's why "When I Go Away" is such a powerful song for me. The come back must have been such a joy for his family to be a part of, and I know it was fun for a young'un like myself to follow.

Acadian Driftwood. Absolutely perfect. And to think it came at the end of their time together (album: Northern Lights, Southern Cross), and was performed at the Waltz, but excluded from the film.
