Road Bike Comparison

  • Looking to get a bike for fun/fitness. I live in Dayton and there are tons of nice paved paths that I can use. My in-laws live in the middle of nowhere and I would like to be able to just go on a ride for an hour or so in the country when we visit them.

    I don't want to get ridiculous and spend $4,000 on a bike or anything, but I do want a quality bike. I have test rode both the Trek 1.1 and the Giant Defy 5. Both seemed nice, but it was hard for me to discern a huge difference.

    Any insights from the cycling crowd? A different bike that you may think is a better deal? I'll hang up and listen.

  • The most important part of a road bike is getting one that's the right size for you. The different brands are comparable with frame materials and gear sets. I would find what bike fits your body type the best, the bike shops will help you with that. If you can find the same model on Craigslist or eBay that is one or two years old you can save a lot of money and get more bike.

  • Lots of very knowledgeable cycling folks on this board.. but I'll tell you that you're correct that if it's fitness and fun, $4000 is way, way over the top.
    You may want to think about a road bike or hybrid ?

    You should be able to get a nice bike for $1000-1500.
    Trek, Specialized, Felt are all good brands.

  • Exact same components (Shimano 2300), so you won't notice any differences there. The only real differences you're going to find is in geometry. Did one bike feel more comfortable than the other? If so, that bike may be a better fit for you.

    I don't have any personal experience with the Trek, but I currently ride a Defy 1. It's pretty comfortable on long rides (50+ miles) and I don't have any complaints. But again, all other things being equal, pick the bike that feels most comfortable to you.

  • What fits you is absolutely paramount but my wife and I both ride Trek 1.5s. They have been durable and a good value. I had to replace my saddle because it was murderously uncomfortable after about 10 miles. But that's the only issue with either bike.
