I wasn't trying to say that being fat is better than being thin for swimming, just that having excess body fat isn't as big of a disadvantage in swimming as it is in other sports, particularly running. Of course most world class swimmers are low in body fat, they're professional athletes and swimming burns a shitload of calories lol

My apologies. I have heard people say that they think swimmers are fat and I don't understand it. I once heard a guy say micheal phelps was fat.

It's just me, for the life of me I can't understand how the guy in the lane next to me swims "literally" laps around me and when he gets out of the pool he has a beer gut and a fat face...Swimming has a lot to do with technique and unfortunately my technique sux...

That's the truth. If I could tell you anything about swimming I would say that it's ALL about technique, I remember my first days on the swim team in high school, not really knowing proper technique, I was killing myself to just do a few laps. Then you wake up the next morning with crazy asymetrical soreness. I've experienced a lot of different sports, and swimming is the most masichistic. A least when you're running cross country you can hear things, see things that aren't a line on the bottom of the pool, and breath whenever you want. I only swam my senior year in high school, and it was insane. I still do laps a few times a week, but competitive swim teams are a beast.

  • I would definitely agree about swimming technique vs conditioning.
There are plenty of people I've trained with that can kick my ass in the pool, but are much slower runners/cyclists.

3-lane roads with a center left turn lane are actually safer than 4-lane roads so in those cases it would make sense, depending on traffic volumes. Generally, if you build bike lanes it comes at the expense of something else, like on-street parking or travel lanes. On MOST roads there is just no room for them. You need to have a certain number of travel lanes, sidewalks, space for street lights/utilities/etc. all fit within a certain right of way. And there are standards for lane widths, you can't just narrow them whenever you see fit.

Yeah, it's safer, but it chokes traffic flow. I'd rather it be a little less safe and with less traffic flow resistance. whistling It pissed me off to no end when they reduced Grand River from 4 lanes to one lane in each direction with a center turn lane between Frandor and Michigan Ave. That meant having to be stuck behind do-gooders going 25 mph the entire way (that section of roadway should actually be 35mph). frustrated

  • One of my sisters youngsters is a pretty good Jr swimmer. Amazes me even at that level now how much focus is on technique. Video work with 12 year olds, times have changed.

I can top that one. I have someone in my circle that mentions that they COULD do the Tough Mudder, and they constantly get INVITES to do the Tough Mudder, and his reasoning is "because they know with my military background, they want people like me to share my toughness and dedication". (I'm not sure this guy has done a pushup since boot camp, and he's been in various non-combat roles his entire time in the Army). After seeing that a few times, I don't mind the people who are actually training and competing.

You have to be invited to do the Tough Mudder?

Is that the one where people run through burning houses and get electrocuted in a giant puddle?

    Sounds awesome... and EXTREME!!!

No, anyone can enter the TM competitions. But, they encourage you to form teams, and so people invite other people that they think might want to take part. Some obstacles require teamwork to get past them.

The events are pretty damn cool. There's some good videos and maps of the various locations at their website.

It's all different. When you're riding 120 miles a day for a week in a row or more, conditioning, technique, skill, and daring all come into play in cycling.

Only the first two traits are required for running and swimming.

As far as sportsmen go, cyclists are the best. The care for the machine, the desire to do things properly and fairly, and above all sportsmanship, are all required traits of a good cyclist.

Which is exactly why I choose not to bike on the streets, I like to be considerate to other people on the road.

I'm not sure where you are going with this but riding a bike on the sidewalk is very dangerous. Sidewalks are for walkers not cyclists. And despite your left handed attack on cyclists on the roads, I never seem to be inconsiderate to car drivers. Get over yourself.

I think you are missing some important points about serious cyclists. We don't put ourselves in danger and try not to ride on busy streets. I live in Farmington Hills and would never ride on 8 Mile Rd or Grand River. I stick mainly to 2 lane roads that aren't very busy and I think this is the case for most serious cyclists.

Meanwhile, I was wearing a Nike dri fit tee, my Spartan cap, and a plain pair of North Face hiking shorts but I looked so out of place with all the crazy shit everyone had. And I'm still miffed at how any of it made any difference?

    I know, Cool Story Bro

I'm pretty sure you're 'miffed' about the meaning of the word miffed.
