Just saw this in the MSAA Newsletter, looks like a good read:
A new book sheds light on how MSU was able to become a member of the Big Ten Conference in the face of fierce opposition by the University of Michigan. In the new book, Arrogance and Scheming in the Big Ten (DJY Publishing, LLC, 2011), David Young, M.D., a doctor from Holland, reveals what one observer calls “a story of intrigue, lying, timing, friendships made and broken.” Based on extensive research, the book chronicles a history that ultimately resulted in a victory for President John Hannah and for the future of MSU. It shows how adroitly Hannah overcame the many obstacles along the way. Although Young is a graduate of Notre Dame, he explains in the book that he grew up as a Spartan fan and was motivated to write this history after a conversation with his one-time neighbor in East Lansing, Jack Breslin, who was then executive vice president at MSU. The book is available from Amazon.com.

Edit: This wikipedia link covers much of the struggles pretty well (though i have seen it documented more thoroughly elsewhere). Just search "University of M" within the document, and pretty much every reference is scUM trying to block MSU from doing anything.

It's amazing how little has changed in all this time. How an entire school, community and alumni base can be so arrogant so consistently for so many years is amazing. A lot of times a school will be unfairly perceived as arrogant just because it is a rival school but in our case, with U of M...I've seen and heard too much to think that it isn't 100% true.

just finished it. Good read Sometimes repetitive, but very intriguing. Those scUM buckets have been out to keep us down for DECADES

Lots of reasons, but initially about existing. Later, they got on their high horse that MSU didn't recruit fair by the standards of the day and that they were pure as the driven snow.
They had everyone in the conference over the barrel as revenues were split and UMs stadium was a revenue machine. So they ruled over everyone since they could decide who to play and when to play them at Mich Stadium. Everyone caved to them due to the money. The great irony is they tried to portray themselves as clean as the driven snow, but used $$ to dominate scheduling and all conference policies. No one dared stand up to them or get crushed financially.

Yost years - so far we got Michigan's Faculty Board in Control of Athletics (Ralph Aigler) leading the charge against Iowa for suspect recruiting tactics, beating the war drum for the fellow conference members to severely punish them. All the while Coach Yost and his successor Kipke are locked into Detroit booster clubs that pay kids to go to and play @ Michigan (and having practices well outside of regulated allowable time...stop me if you've heard that one before). When Aigler finds out about all that he discloses it to the conference members and imposes harsh sanctions on his own program right? Following the same moral compass that led him to be out front, finger waving at Iowa, right? Wrong, he stifles it and works feverishly to keep it from seeing the light of day in hopes of keeping it from becoming a public relations disaster.

So I guess they have had a history of practicing BEYOND the allowable time that they and everybody is suppose to follow.

I am curious if there is a single comparable instance of MSU trying to block scUM at anything. Maybe some examples exist, and I've been wearing my green goggles for too long... but I don't think so.
