SIAP: Arrogance and Scheming new book on MSU & B1G Entry

  • I read half the book in the past couple days. FANTASTIC read. Very well researched and written. Lots of interesting info about the history of the conference and our university. I'd highly recommend it.

  • Does anyone know how I can get this book in epub format? Or any format that would work for a NOOK?

I'm not completely as aware of this part of MSU history as I probably should be. Did U of M just not want us there because they feared the in-state competition? I am guessing most likely because they are a bunch of vaginas.

    Yes and YES!

You mean MSU and 5 other schools blocked them from the Rose Bowl. Yet MSU's vote is singled out as somehow the trump card.

Yeah, I never understand this perspective, especially after um stonewalling MSU's entry to the conference. Anyone w/ a clue would have been shocked if MSU voted any other way.

The title of the book made me laugh out loud..... it's great that it's a Domer that wrote it (though he did grow up in EL....) He says he has enough material for a second book, detailing crap that went on throughout the 1950's....

Boom. It's as if Goliath beat on David for years, and one day David took a swing and knocked out Goliath, and Goliath's mother complained to the school about a bullying problem.

I bought the Kindle version online through Amazon for my iPad and am reading it now. Just search for the book by title however you buy books for the Nook. Shouldn't have a problem finding it.

  • Great book, although the author ends on a bit of a cynical note regarding college football. Worth the money.

It's not available through barnes and noble for the Nook and can't find it anywhere else but Amazon through Kindle. Damn you Barnes & Noble.

I use my Kindle almost exclusively now (for pleasure reading), but will buy the hard copy of this book. I'll treat it like the history book it is, and share it with friends and family before placing it in my permanent collection.

I thought Rexrode's article was pretty damn good. If anyone has a copy that they already read that they're interested in selling, please let me know.

I'm sure that would make for an interesting read.

  • Just finished this book. It's a must-read for any MSU football historian.

The author refers to himself as an "amateur historian," but he did a really thorough job of researching his subject. However, he is an amateur writer. The book is overly long b/c it's repetitive, and it ends weakly, not talking at all about the reaction to MSU's Big Ten entry, or how we fared once in the conference. He could've done a better job relating it to recent Big Ten expansion efforts, and left out how he's become jaded about college football.

Still, some REALLY interesting facts about the history of the Big Ten, (for instance, Nebraska had tried to get in repeatedly, beginning in the early 20th century, and our main competition to replace the University of Chicago was Pitt), and who our friends and enemies were in the Big Ten, (friends: Minny, Purdue, IU, enemies: mainly um). And if you don't know why you should have a festering hatred for um, read this book.

Not a perfect effort, but if you like being knowledgeable about MSU football, read it.

  • I'm only part way through this book and the research is extremely impressive...I recently came across one sentence that had 4 footnotes at the end!

The repetitiveness is easily the biggest downside so far. Well researched for sure. He needed some guidance on how to put a book together so it tied together without repeating. Overall a good read though.

  • Finished this book last week and found it to be very enjoyable and very interesting. Yes, it was strangely put together - it read more like a text book at times - but the info covered was impressive. I will have to buy my Minnesota friends a beer the next time I see them. cheers Hannah comes off as a freaking rock star. spartan2 Ralph Young, not so much. whistling And if anyone needed another 1000 reasons to hate the University of Michigan and everything for which it stands - this book provides them and the references to back them up. Also it is laughable that anyone would claim anything about college athletic events which happened prior to WW2 - I'm looking at you Michigan and your mythical championships - the game was clearly such a different beast back them.

My father is reading the book and he seconds everything you said. He basically says Yost makes Calapari look like Tom Izzo by how much he cheated.

  • Finally finished reading this book. It was a long read but I am glad I read it as I learned quite a bit about the history of MSU and the B1G.

The two things that stood out to me was how much Minnesota did to help us get into the B1G and how important of a person John Hannah was to MSU. Without Hannah MSU probably wouldn't be half the school it is today. Oh and Fuck Michigan.
