SIAP: Decent Freep Article on the Incoming FR starting at MSU

  • Nice article on the Freep about the incoming FR coming onto campus this week.

    http://www.freep.com/article/20120701/SPORTS07/207010546/New-Spartans-football-players-talk-about-starting-college-life-at-Michigan-State

Brings me back to "Welcome Week" and the first tastes of the Case Hall cafe. Some interesting nuggets in there; RB Nick Tompkins says he's put on 10 pounds (puts him at 5'10 195ish), lots of guys working out over the summer, etc. It's nice to see camaraderie develop early on in their careers.

This quote brought a smile to my face and makes me wax nostalgic about the dorm experience. lol

"On which recruit he's (OT Jack Conklin) gotten to know best: "The only person I've talked to much is Kodi Kieler. He's going to be my roommate, so we've been talking about what to bring to the dorm rooms. I've got the mini-fridge and the couch. He's got the microwave and TV."

We're about a month away from the first fall practice. Dog days of summer, here we come!

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Read this yesterday. Pretty good stuff.

Also, T-minus 60 days until kickoff!

  • Looks like we have a cool crop of freshman.

Nice to see that a number of these guys already know each other and are comfortable with the current members of the team. I also like seeing that these guys have been putting in extra work in the weightroom over the summer. Yea, I know just about everyone across the country does this, but it's still nice to know that State has a crop of hard workers coming in.

It'll be interesting to see who contributes as a true FR this year. I think there will be 5-7 true FR playing this year.

Well, he could end up at OT before it's all said and done . . .

That could actually explain the staff not freaking out about taking 1 OT in 2013.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • Jones definitely has a frame. And there is a lot of precedent for former 2-star TEs turning into 1st round NFL draft picks at OT.

    Too bad he's a 3-star...

Hey Andrew, what's the official first day of practice?

I don't know off-hand, it's usually 3 weeks before the first game, but with the game being on a Friday, I'm not sure. It should start sometime during the week of Aug. 6, probably later in the week. Usually they go a couple days in shorts, a couple days in shells, then 2 weeks of full pads. Team was pretty healthy out of spring ball, so they may get the pads on earlier.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

You should see the picture of him on twitter. If you did you would never believe that he is an 18 year old.

facepalm_msu That makes sense. 3 weeks of camp + 1 week of "normal" prep time for Boise. I need to work on my reading comprehension today.

  • I love those quotes. It's nice to see some personality come out of these recruits, instead of just hearing about their 40 times and bench reps.

No, but it's looking that State will only end up with 1 OT in '13.

Who do you think could be the 5-7 that play this year? The ones I see mostly likely right now are:

    1. Burbridge
    2. Madaris
    3. Cox
    4. A TE

    Who else?

I think Kings sees some time in the return game, plus Tompkins at RB. Wouldn't be shocked if another FR DB finds his way onto the special teams unit.

    SpartanRocky

  • I would say that these are the most likely, although we could go without using any of them.

    TE - Price
    WR - Burbridge/Madaris
    Wildcat/RB/WR/S - Cox
    PR/KR - Kings

I really think that might be the most. WR and TE are really the only "open" spots.

The reason I say Tompkins is because I'm not sold on the back-up RB options. I think Caper has all the tools, but if he's had a couple of concussions already, it'd only take one more to sideline him for good. Hill has great burst, but lacks that final top-end gear, and has never been close to a feature back. That pretty much leaves Tompkins as the only other RB option, unless Langford moves back.

Plus, with Holmes and Shelton coming in next year, the staff will probably want to see what they have in Tompkins sooner rather than later.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

There definitely seems to be a correlation between players who do well in NCAA/Pro sports and developing a lot earlier physically than the average teenager. I mean how many football/basketball players don't already look like adults?
